1954 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Deluxe 2 Door Hardtop-Survivor Car

This is one fine rare car.  You don't see many true survivors of this quality, vintage and make.  The VIN indicates that this is a "Deluxe" 98.  This car is genuine in every way.  All of the numbers match including the engine, exterior trim and interior trim.  The car HAS NOT been restored.

The odometer shows 40,555 miles.  The speedometer was in place when I got the car in 2001.  (Disclosure) The cable was making noise so I removed it so it would not break.  I never got around to replacing it.  I do have the cable in the trunk.  I have driven the car less than 500 miles with it disconnected (I have driven it about 10 times around town and to car shows).

My dad bought the car in the mid 1990's and the car has been garaged but rarely driven.  My dad passed away in 2001 and the car has been in my possession ever since.  I have driven the car less than 500 miles in the 12 years.

This Olds has all of the stuff that any classic or Olds enthusiast would relish.  All of the ingredients are here for a great story and a great investment as well as a perfect cruiser.

The car shows very well and as evidenced by the photos, is an eye turning 20 footer.  I never fail to get in a conversation
with guys my age and young alike when I show it .

The car has a power front seat, power brakes, power windows, 4 barrel 324 v-8, padded dash, leather seats, radio, and heater.  I know that I have forgotten some of the options but you get the idea.

The power front seat is fully operational.

I just had the master cylinder rebuilt and the lines flushed out in June 2013.  The oil was changed in fall of 2012.  The emergency brake works perfectly which is a big deal since these cars had no "Park" gear.

The left rear power window does not raise or lower but the pump is working.  The other 3 power windows fully operate perfectly.  The right front window has a crack in the front top corner.  The car also has the original tinted glass all around.

The 324 V-8 starts easily cold or hot unless it has been sitting for a very long time.  Then it must be primed, but it starts every time with a little TLC.  The car has some valve noise when it is first started after a long period of not running but it quiets down quickly.

The 4 speed Hydromatic automatic transmission shifts and performs like new.

The completely original padded dash is flawless in every detail from color to softness to stitching.

The headliner is in excellent original condition.

The front seats are red leather and dark gray fabric.  The seat shell has some wear with a small hole worn in the side and the corner stitching on the seat back top corners is pulled some but not completely.  An upholsterer could fix it with no problem.  The rear seat is in fine condition with no visible flaws.  The rear shelf cardboard is discolored as would be expected.

The carpet is all there but a little rough in condition.  It is 59 years old.

The radio does not work as far as I know.  A friend of mine said that it sometimes took up to 10 minutes for the tubes to warm up.  I haven't tried to fix it or warm it up.

The heater is there but does not work.

I will miss this car but my current circumstances dictate that I sell the car.  My dad got this car for me to have at his passing.  The car was built the same year that I was born.  I no longer can care for the car as it should be cared for.  I really want a real enthusiast to own and enjoy the car the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to have one of the finest ever Unrestored 1954 "98" Hardtop Oldsmobiles you will find.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?

Jay Leno bangs up his own Toronado in GT6

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Ever since Gran Turismo 4, Jay Leno has had at least one of his cars included in the popular racing simulator (starting with the Tank Car), and more of his machines appears in Gran Turismo 6. They include this nose-heavy, front-wheel-drive V8-powered muscle car. Yes, that aptly describes a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado - except Leno's is rear-wheel drive. And it has a Cadillac CTS-V race engine modified to pump out 1,070 horsepower.
For the latest Jay Leno's Garage episode, he takes his real Toronado out for a cruise and then drives the virtual one like he stole it, accruing some body damage along the way. Leno also drives the virtual supercar Mercedes-Benz designed for GT6, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show, along with the real one, which is a 1:1-scale model. The model is radio-controlled and equipped with a small electric motor, sufficient to move it on and off of auto show floors.
Head below to watch the episode, which includes a few words from GT6 creator Kazunori Yamauchi.

GM recalling 8.4M cars, 8.2M related to ignition problems

Mon, 30 Jun 2014

General Motors today announced a truly massive recall covering some 8.4 million vehicles in North America. Most significantly, 8.2 million examples of the affected vehicles are being called back due to "unintended ignition key rotation," though GM spokesperson Alan Adler tells Autoblog that this issue is not like the infamous Chevy Cobalt ignition switch fiasco.
For the sake of perspective, translated to US population, this total recall figure would equal a car for each resident of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Vermont and Wyoming. Combined. Here's how it all breaks down:
7,610,862 vehicles in North America being recalled for unintended ignition key rotation. 6,805,679 are in the United States.
