1985 Mercedes 280sl 5 Speed With Lorinser Package - Low Miles on 2040-cars
Ellijay, Georgia, United States
1985 Mercedes 280SL 5 Speed. Less than 92,000 Miles.
This is the European high output double overhead cam 2.8 liter SL. Has more horsepower than the 3.8 V eight in a lighter, better handling package. I believe that this SL has the Lorinser package. I have never seen another one like it. Wider wheels and aerodynamic . Really sticks to the road. I always get comments in this car. It is very entertaining to drive in the mountains. Gets 23 to 25 mpg on ethanol free premium fuel. This is not like the big, heavy cruisers. The 280's are high revving and more agile due to the better weight distribution. Pros: Mechanically sound, less than 92k miles. All gauges work, including the clock. Does not leak any fluids. Exceptional handling. Excellent fuel economy for SL. Very rare. Dash has no cracks. NO RUST. Both tops. Interesting chapter in this vehicles early history - Car was manufactured in Germany and was exported to Bogota Colombia in 1985. Shipped to Texas a few months later. ??? Documentation included. Has been in Texas until I Bought it in 2008. Has original tool kit and unopened first aid kit. Also have set of U.S. Spec lights if you don't like the European look. Cons: Almost 30 years old, some items do show wear. Chrome on some wheels flaking, Drivers seat has rip. Paint is good but does have age that shows on close inspection, it does not show up well in the pictures. Two small tears in top. If you would like to know why these are considered a "Drivers Car" and learn more about the 280sl and bulletproof M110 engine, please follow this link: http://timelessmotorclassics.com/Euro280SLHistoryTranslationPage.htm I have tried to give an accurate description of the cars condition. If you would like more information or additional pictures, please contact me. ebay does not recognize the vin - Correct VIN: WDB1070421A027286 $500 Paypal deposit due within 48 hours of sale. BMW expects China to pass US as its top market in 2013
Thu, 11 Jul 2013When you combine two billion citizens, 100 cities with more than a million inhabitants and an economy that's as unrestrained as Jim Cramer on an Adderall binge, China's explosive auto industry growth shouldn't be a huge surprise. Audi already lists the communist country as its largest market, while Mercedes-Benz is expecting it to be there in the next few years. Now, according to a report from Automotive News, BMW is expecting the People's Republic to overtake the United States in sales by the end of 2013.
We already discovered the extent that BMW is going to in establishing a dedicated Chinese stronghold, when we explored BMW's Shanghai-based DesignWorks studio ahead of April's Shanghai Motor Show. And while we argued that DesignWorks Shanghai hasn't really borne fruit, it isn't due to a lack of sales.
BMW China has seen a 16-percent jump in year-over-year sales, lead by a 28-percent gain in 5 Series sales. Part of BMW's growth strategy comes from an ever-expanding dealership network. Remember those 100 cities we mentioned with over one million people? According to Karsten Engel, CEO of BMW's Chinese operations, those 100-million-plus city dwellers don't have access to a premium dealership.
Zetsche's CEO tenure extended through 2016 at Daimler
Sun, 24 Feb 2013There appear to be two takes on Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche having his contract extended for three more years, to 2016. A report in The Detroit News quotes the chairman of Daimler's supervisory board, Manfred Bischoff, talking up the stability at the top, "With today's extensions of the contracts of Dieter Zetsche and Thomas Weber, we are maintaining the important continuity at the top executive level." Bischoff also stated that that Zetsche has a plan to "further enhance Daimler's overall performance."
Over at Reuters, though, the three-year extension was seen as a lack of complete confidence in Zetsche's plans, since his contract was supposedly meant to be extended by five years. A spokesman said the board decided to extend executive contracts by only three years if the person was 60 or would turn 60 during the contract, but that was news to observers. Zetsche wants to make Mercedes-Benz the top selling luxury manufacturer globally by 2020, but has fallen to third place behind Audi and BMW. It hasn't held the top spot 2005, and investors judged it valued at half that of BMW at the end of 2012 once Daimler's truck business was subtracted.
Analysts cites the fact that Daimler stock hasn't bested its rivals but twice in twelve years, and that the company revised its profit target downward last year by nearly one billion euros, warning of stagnant earnings this year and will miss its original margin target for 2013.
AMG-powered Aston Martins still years away
Mon, 16 Sep 2013After flirting for several years, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin have finally tied the knot. Just don't expect to see any offspring to result from the union for at least three or four years.
This according to Auto Express, which spoke with Daimler chief Dr. Dieter Zetsche at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. AE reports that a new range of AMG-developed turbocharged V8s, transmissions and electrical components will make their way into the successors to the current V8 Vantage and DB9, but that these models are still a few years off.
Purists might balk at the thought of a Mercedes-powered Aston holding true to the brand's heritage. But while David Brown (for whom the DB range is named) may have steered clear of shoehorning in Detroit muscle into his cars, the entirety of the company's current range is powered by engines borrowing technology from Ford, and that arrangement seems to have worked well for Aston until now. And if you're still skeptical, look no further than Pagani and its AMG-sourced engines and you should have all the proof you need that the new relationship between Daimler and Aston could be a success.
