The 2012 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a full-sized luxury sedan available in hybrid and AMG trim levels. The base S550 sedan comes standard with a 429 hp producing 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, 7-speed automatic transmission, and RWD. The S600 trim boasts a 510 hp producing 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12 engine, 5-speed automatic transmission, and RWD. For the green driver the RWD S400 hybrid trim offers a 295 hp producing mild-hybrid 3.5-liter V6 engine and the S350 BlueTec 4MATIC offers a 3.0-liter turbodisel V6 that produces 240 hp. The S63 and S65 AMG trim levels seamlessly combine luxury with performance. The S63 AMG sports a 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 that produces 536 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque while the S65 harnesses the power of a 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 that produces a whopping 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Both models are RWD and come with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT. Fuel mileage falls within an EPA estimated range of 12 mpg city to 31 mpg highway, depending on model selection. Safety comes in the form of 10-way airbag protection, blind-spot assist, anti-lock braking, electronic stability program, and active body control. The S-Class is backed by a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. The S-Class has set the standard for luxury and performance in a sedan. Now, Mercedes-Benz is setting its sights on making its flagship vehicle a standard in fuel economy and reduced emissions as well by adding the diesel engine this year to the hybrid system it introduced last year. Sport-driving fans need not worry, though, as the AMG-tuned models continue to deliver high horsepower in a luxury wrapper. The big news for 2012 is that a S350 BlueTEC diesel model becomes available. The S550 gets a 4.6L twin-turbo V8 engine that makes 429 horsepower and 516 lb-feet of torque. A rear-seat entertainment system is newly optional on the S400 hybrid and on the S63. Once again, Mercedes-Benz revised their engine options on the S-Class. A new 3.0L BlueTEC V6 becomes available and the S550 receives a smaller-displacement, but more powerful twin-turbo 4.6L V8 over last year's 5.5L V8.2012 Mercedes-Benz S550 Sedan

2014 Mercedes S-Class priced lower from $92,900*
Mon, 09 Sep 2013The massively overhauled 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will start at $92,900, not including a $925 destination fee, when it arrives at US dealers in October. That's a 2.8-percent drop over the 2013 S-Class, although Mercedes is fast to point out that a drop in price doesn't equate with a drop in equipment for the executive sedan.
Besides an extra 20 horsepower from the 4.6-liter, biturbocharged V8, the S550 sports a standard panoramic sunroof, keyless start, a rear-view camera and LED headlights, taillights and interior lights. Adding the German manufacturer's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system bumps the S550's price up to $95,900.
If the S550 doesn't quite cut the mustard, you can wait until November, at which point Mercedes will quite happily sell you the new S63 AMG 4Matic for $139,500. Power is also up on the S63, from a max of 563 ponies with an AMG Performance Package to 577 horsepower as standard on the 2014 model.
Mercedes-Benz releases US-spec 2014 Sprinter details
Mon, 06 May 2013Last week, Mercedes-Benz released the details for the updated 2013 Sprinter intended for global markets, but this week it has announced what changes are being made to the US-spec version of the van for the 2014 model year, including the Freightliner model. As expected, most of the changes made to the European model will be present on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter when it goes on sale in the US, which is expected to be this fall.
The biggest difference between the Sprinter announced last week and the one headed to our shores is what is found under the hood. While European Sprinters will come with diesel engines and offer the availability of a supercharged four-cylinder gasoline or CNG engine, US Sprinters will still offer the 3.0-liter V6 BlueTEC diesel. This year's Sprinter now comes standard with a new base engine, the 2.1-liter four-cylinder BlueTEC diesel. This smaller engine will produce 161 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, and will be paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission; the optional 3.0 V6 puts out 188 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque, and will be mated to a six-speed auto.
Fuel economy for the new Sprinter has not been announced, but Mercedes-Benz has made numerous changes with the goal of improving efficiency. To this end you'll find a new, low-friction rear axle and the optimization for the generator, fuel pump and power steering pump.
Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG officially teased in mini video
Mon, 15 Jul 2013The followup to the Mercedes-Benz S550, the S63 AMG, will sport a biturbocharged V8 that will likely turn out around 550 horsepower. The new engine is probably the 5.5-liter, biturbocharged V-8 that's been popping up in everything from the ML63 to the E63 AMG. The front fascia is more aggressive, which shouldn't come as a surprise, while a meaty exhaust setup can be found out back.
We managed to pick all that up from a short, 17-second video posted by MB. The original video that unveiled the S63 AMG has since been pulled down, making this YouTube clip the best look we now have at the new super sedan, at least until the Germans give up the goods for real.
Be sure to check out the video below, along with our original posting on the S63 AMG.
