We have here a very nice 1986 Mercedes Benz 560 SEC! The SEC was Mercedes Benz Flagship Model, and cost upward of seventy thousand dollars, a pretty tidy sum of money twenty eight years ago! These cars have recently begun to come into their own, the prices have started going up, for nice examples, and I expect the trend to continue! The exterior of this car is beautiful, the paint is very nice, and there are no dings or dents. The finish on the wheels is great, although the tires will need replacement in the not too distant future. The air is cold, and amazingly, has never been converted to R134 yet. It still has all the R12 fittings! The engine runs smooth and quiet, as does the transmission. The driveshaft does have some vibration on hard acceleration, but smooths out when you back off the gas, it doesn't do it if you accelerate easy! Probably either the center bearing on the driveshaft, or one of the mounts. The interior in this car, is it's crowning glory! I deal in a lot of cars, (my first job in the car business was in 1973) and rarely do you find a car of this age, with such an awesome interior! The pictures don't do it justice! In some of the pictures of the front seats, due to the lighting, the color you see, isn't accurate! The pictures of the door panels will show you the true color! The elderly gentleman who traded it in, claimed that the back seat had never been sat in, and I believe him! This combined with the fact that the leather is a very rare and elegant reddish brown color, that Mercedes Benz calls Henna! It really is stunning! The carpet is also absolutely gorgeous, the car has never been smoked in, and the lighter has never even been used. All of the power features, seats, windows, seat belt extenders, etc. work as they should, with the exception of the power telescope feature on the column. The radio recently started acting up, and is only working intermittently, the power antenna works great. The last time I drove this car, the speedo was working, but when I drove it to my photo location this afternoon, the speedo wasn't working. I believe that it is the speedo head and not the speed sensor, as I tried the cruise control, and it is still working. I just checked on line and found used speedo heads, for under $100.00. In the State of Fla. when a car is over ten years old, the miles on the title read exempt, and that is how this one is reading. I try to describe all of my vehicles as accurately as possible, but any and all questions are welcomed, and indeed encouraged! My name is Pat, and my number is (352)363-8154 I am so confident in this car, I am selling it "No Reserve" it's that nice! As with all of my auctions, I do reserve the right to end it early, as it is being offered for sale locally! Thanks for looking, and Happy Bidding!

Carlsson SLK 340 Judd is winged up for hill climb glory

Wed, 06 Mar 2013

Carlsson has been expertly tuning Mercedes-Benz products for more than 20 years now, but we can't say as we remember the outfit turning out anything quite so racy as this SLK 340 Judd that it has brought along to the Geneva Motor Show this year.
This SLK is meant for competition, obviously, and Carlsson has already booked the car to race in several hill climb events in the E1 category. The purpose-built racer should have a fighting chance to do well in said races, with a shape vetted in wind tunnel testing for maximum downforce, the SLK uses a carbon-fiber bodyshell to help achieve a curb weight of just about 1,720 pounds.
The featherweight SLK's name comes from its 3.4-liter V8 engine, which churns out a wicked 610 horsepower to go with its 317 pound-feet of torque. A Hewland transmission with paddle shift operation manages all of the thrust.

Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing doesn't sell, then does sell for $1.85 million [UPDATE: w/video]

Sat, 19 Jan 2013

How much extra value does previous celebrity ownership add to of a car? Really, there's no way to know until the car in question hits the auction block and bidders start raising their hands. In the case of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing you see above, the celebrity owner is none other than Clark Gable, who purchased it new. After Gable's death in 1960, the car changed hands a few times before settling with Charles Wood in 1975.
A high-dollar restoration was performed in 1989, and period accessories added by Gable himself were kept in place, including the Rudge knock-off wheels and Nardi steering wheel. Any Mercedes-Benz 300SL is worth a big chunk of money. In the case of Clark Gable's old Gullwing, the bidding stalled at $1.9 million here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. As one of the 5000-series cars, this 300SL carried a reserve, and a bit of after-the-fact dealmaking saw the car change hands for $1.85 million.

Test drive the Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive with Chris Harris

Thu, 11 Apr 2013

It's hard to not like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT. The all-aluminum coupe is fitted with a wonderful naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Not only does the burly combustion engine launch the two-seater to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, but it does so with one of the world's greatest exhaust soundtracks as it roars, burbles and cackles down the road.
But what happens when Mercedes-Benz takes away the V8 and its accompanying fire-burning song? Stripped of one of its most appealing assets, does the SLS lose its soul?
Chris Harris recently had the opportunity to take the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive for a track spin in Europe. Sans gasoline, but with four electric motors providing a combined 740 horsepower (737 pound-feet of torque), all-electric all-wheel drive coupe uses sophisticated torque vectoring and a multi-mode operating system to put oversteer - drifting! - back into the equation. Fun? You bet. See for yourself, below.
