***SEE THE NOTES AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS TEXT.*** Note we have reduced the price to a bargain price from the actual Hagerty value price of $6,500 dollars. The average sale price for these cars is $6,200 dollars. We even went as low as the lesser valued condition price of $4,500 dollars. This rare classic fintail car is relisted. It wound up just a few hundred dollars below the reserve price, which has been adjusted. We don't think people understood how rare the car (made for just two years) and its original documents are. The registration, service records and repair receipts date back to when the car was new, enough to get a good picture of the car's life. Keep in mind, that this car is a three time barn find, that hasn't been cleaned inside or out in nearly a decade. This model was only made for two years. With all the work that's been done to it it's still a barn find, only now it's a safe, fully serviced, running and driving barn find. This car apparently started life as an Oregon car before moving to Palm Springs where it eventually became a barn find, then on to Denver where after some years of use, it once again became a barn find, and finally back to Oregon, where it continued as a barn find for several more years. This original matching numbers car runs and drives well, however the front carburetor seems to have a vacuum leak, thus won't sync up properly, so it idles a little rough. The ignition switch was repaired, according to records the switch has had issues since 1968. The car is equipped with power front disc brakes. The system was checked out in the shop, and the brakes work great. The head liner is in good shape, with some minor sun splitting on each side of the rear window at the C pillars. The front reclining seats are in very nice shape as is the back seat with the exception of some sun baking on the top of the rear seat resulting in two evenly spaced splits (see picture)on each side of the top of the rear seat . They are spaced uniformly and look very repairable. The removable carpet on the front passenger side is in poor condition due to fabric break down due to a possible small leak at the windshield as there is evidence that the windshield has been resealed on the outside of the seal. The rest of the floor of the car is in respectable condition. Keep in mind this car has not been washed or cleaned in or out in perhaps a decade. as the car was covered when it was stored. The exterior is very presentable, however there is some minor surface cracks in the paint on the left rear quarter panel that you need to look very, very hard for. There are a couple of very small dings that were left when the car was painted, one on the top, above the drip rail, over the driver car door and one near the trunk latch. There is also a door ding on the left rear door just between the door handle and above the fender well on the door. All of the lights and signals work even the backup and dome lights (no electrical gremlins here) The car has dealer installed four way flashers. Four way flashers and seat belts weren't federally required until 1968. The two speed wipers and three speed heater fan operate as they should. The original and rare blpunkt powerful AM radio works great and has a good factory speaker, however the sound is a bit "tinny" by todays standards. There is one heat crack on the dash pad near the radio speaker and another just behind the instrument cluster binical, between the binical and the inside windshield trim. The windshield has a bebe chip at the very top of the glass above the steering wheel and it has minor wiper rash. The tires have very good tread but should be replaced simply due to their age. The car has no rust in the front cross member, rocker panels, wheel wells, floors or trunk area other than acceptable minor surface rust here and there, rare for this body series. Both trunk mats are complete and in intact good condition. The power steering seems to work better when turning the steering wheel to the right than it does turning the wheel to the left when the car is stopped. It's not very noticeable when driving. The odometer states 80K miles, however it's not working, the speedometer does work. I'm inclined to believe the odometer is close to correct as there is no wear on the driver's side floor covering or the gas and brake pedal and the old service records bare that out. From what we know of the car's history (ballpark) the mileage makes sense. All the exterior chrome is present as delivered new forty eight years ago. We did not receive the key for any lock but the ignition key. A key will need to be made for the doors and trunk. These both use the same key. The glove box uses yet another key. A code for these keys are provided in the pre-delivery work sheet included in the owners packet. The codes make a replacement key a snap and will cost much less than making them from scratch. The car has dealer installed aircraft seat belts, as none were required in 1966. In the process of getting the car road worthy we replaced the radiator, battery, fuel pump, air cleaner, driveshaft center carrier bearing and the front anti-vibration drive shaft coupler was replaced with a new one. The gas tank was removed and internally coated to seal and protect it. The car was tuned, the oil was changed and a lubrication service was performed. Of course there are 50 other little things that have been done to it to help make it right and into the dependable driver it is. This car can only go up in value from here for the rare classic that it is. Barring damage to the car, it will never be worth less than it is right now. At this point it can only appreciate in value. The car comes with a good spare tire, the original jack, a good spare brake rotor and a spare hub cap. A power steering rebuild kit, assorted other small parts as well. The factory owners packet including warranty manual with protecto plate, owners manual, radio manual with warranty card and four schematics in four different languages none of which are English, and the warranty card and the radio operating instructions. Also included is a very rare Bosh service directory with Bosh service locations all around the world. The original BUILD CARDS (in German), owners service policy booklet and Mercedes service record book and pre delivery sheet with the code numbers for all of the vehicle's keys. This too adds to the full history of this car. Also included is a September 15th '65 MB dealer directory (perhaps when the '66 was bought new ?)and a February 15 MB directory, also provided by the dealer, both directory's for US locations only. This owners packet is original to this car. Most of the service and repair receipts from over the years are also included. We located hard to find new wiper blade refills and installed them. We will include receipts that reflect some of our investment in saving this car. The car has fresh Oregon plates and tags, good through November 2015. A new Oregon clear title (the car had Utah plates which had expired in 2006) is currently being processed by the state and will arrive shortly. This "Fintail" is a good car to finish reconditioning and use it as a daily driver, or to do a "full on" restoration with, for show which would bring the car up to $1,1000 or $1,2000 dollars at currant value rates. I buzzed all over town with it recently, It ran great. This car attracts attention where ever it goes. So much so that you couldn't pick your nose in private if you wanted to (smile). Someone is always looking at it day or night. This car is getting hard to find as the 111 (230S) was made for only two years, '66 and '67. This was the second to last year for tailfins and the last year with chrome trim on them. It is also the first car ever with safety crumple zones to protect the interior structure and passengers. The way it sits with a stock slight "hot rod" rake, it just exudes "cool". The car is presented with a very generous reserve. We require a $500.00 dollar non refundable deposit through PayPal and full payment in five business days should the reserve be met. The deposit will be forfeited should the winning bidder fail to complete full payment in the prescribed time frame. We are motivated sellers. All aspects of shipping are solely the responsibility of the winning buyer. Post script: The line across the glass of the instrument cluster is merely a reflection of the horn ring not a crack in the glass. What appears to be a dent in the right rear bumper is also just a reflection. ********12/2/13: the last offer was just a few hundred dollars short of what it will take to buy this car. ****** Your so close now, don't give up keep bidding, it won't take much.

Is Audi getting complacent and suffering from brain drain?

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The argument is made in a Reuters article: Audi is falling behind other luxury brands, such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, due to a lack of research-and-development spending and "brain drain," or the migration of top executives and R&D chiefs to other parts of the Volkswagen Group. Reuters notes that Audi's current R&D chief is the third in 16 months.
Audi, which contributed to 40 percent of VW Group's $11.6 billion in profit the first nine months of the year, is delivering cars at a record pace: 1.31 million were delivered from January to October 2013 versus BMW's 1.35 million. Yet Audi, Reuters reports, doesn't have a halo car akin to BMW's new electrified i3 and i8 or an answer to Mercedes' plug-in-hybrid S-Class, and the R&D spending at Audi is less than BMW and Mercedes by a fair margin. It's noted in the article, however, that Audi benefits from other R&D spending within VW Group.
Reuters mentions that BMW "trumpets its new 'i' series" and the new Mercedes CLA and GLA ranges are winning "rave reviews" as part of its argument that Audi's recent lack of technological innovation could hurt future sales. Those cars do pack tons of new technology, some of which are firsts for mainstream production cars. But last time we checked, the i3 could be causing BMW's stock to slide, the CLA isn't receiving the rave reviews that Reuters would have you believe and the GLA hasn't been reviewed yet.

Russia gives its Olympic medalists new Mercedes

Thu, 27 Feb 2014

Russian medalists at the recently concluded Sochi Winter Olympics are being rewarded quite handsomely for their service to the Motherland. In addition to the $120,000 being handed out for each gold medal, the $76,000 being awarded for slivers and $52,000 given to bronze winners, now word has come out that each of Russia's medalists will be gifted a new Mercedes-Benz.
As with the prize amounts, the type of Mercedes offered was based on what sort of medal was won. Gold medalists got a new GL-Class, silver medalists were given an ML and bronze medalists were treated to a GLK. As prices for Mercedes are higher in Russia, the cheapest model, the GLK, was the equivalent of $59,500, according to The Moscow Times. The cars were handed out by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, pictured above with figure skating medalist Julia Lipnitskaia.
"I was a bit shocked at the car I was given," Anton Shipulin, a member of the gold-medal biathlon relay team, told RIA-Novosti. "Of course I knew what kind of model it would be, but I didn't totally believe it." For athletes not old enough to drive, like 15-year-old Lipnitskaia, their Mercedes will come complete with a driver.

Mercedes-AMG considering turbo fours, hybrid sixes for future performance sedans

Tue, 29 Apr 2014

Think of the letters AMG and you'll probably end up picturing a performance sedan with a big V8. Such has become, after all, the Mercedes turning division's calling card. But with the introduction of its 2.0-liter turbo four, AMG is working at turning that notion on its head.
The highly potent engine produces 355 horsepower and is presently installed in the A45 AMG hatchback, CLA45 AMG sedan and GLA45 AMG crossover, giving Benz's smallest family a full range of performance models. But that might not be the full extent of the high-strung four-pot's use.
Speaking with AMG boss Tobias Moers, Britain's What Car? magazine reports that Affalterbach is considering slotting the same engine into larger models, particularly performance sedans like the C-Class. As we recently reported, Mercedes is already preparing to up the power from the turbo V6 in the C400 to slot a C450 Sport in below the C63 AMG. The C450 is expected to offer around 367 horsepower where the CLA45 AMG et al pack 355, but the lighter weight of the four-cylinder engine would likely offset the truancy of those extra dozen horses. Of course such a prospect would be much further down the pipeline than the C450 Sport which is expected to arrive much sooner.
