1983 Land Rover Series III
*Ebay does not recognize older VIN numbers from the UK. The truck is a 1983 NOT a 1980.* This 1983 Land Rover Series III was recently imported from England and is one of the last years for the Series vehicles before Land Rover introduced the Defender. It is in very good mechanical condition and a full factory recommended service and inspection has been carried out on the vehicle. The work performed includes but is not limited to:
Mechanically the truck is in turn-key condition and can be driven anywhere. There are a few small oil leaks that do not cause measurable fluid loss between service intervals. The truck also has a new interior which includes new seats, center console, carpet set and molded rubber floor mats. The dashboard has been rebuilt and the metal parts re-painted. The cowl vents were also refurbished including new rubber gaskets. The heater and ventilation controls have been refurbished as well and work properly. The new heater core produces plenty of heat for the truck which is rare for an older Land Rover. Structurally the truck is in very good condition with only minor surface rust on a few small spots on the chassis. Some frame corrosion was repaired professionally in the UK and the frame and underbody was coated with Waxoyl as a corrosion protectant, the coating is still in very good condition.
The body on the truck is in good condition with no rust or corrosion issues. The door bottoms, which are a common point of failure on the older Rovers are in good shape with no rust-through. The footwells have been repaired in the past and are solid and in good condition. The bulkhead (firewall) is in very good condition with no rust-through, which is also a common problem with older Land Rovers. All glass is original and in good condition with no chips or cracks. The rubber door seals have been replaced and are in good condition. The paint is in fair condition with some oxidation from the sun on the horizontal surfaces that could be buffed out. The paint job is an older re-paint and there are some small dime to nickel sized spots where the paint has flaked off to the original paint. The worst area is on the rear door. There are two areas I have identified where some amateur body work has been done that could stand to be re-done. One is n the front drivers side fender, the other is on the rear tub near a wheel well. The body has multiple small dents that are to be expected with a utility vehicle of this age.
The truck includes an original owners manual, lug wrench, and hand crank for the engine. The rear load space of the truck has been professionally lined with aluminum chequer plate for durability when carrying loads. There is a folding bench seat with seatbelt in the back of the truck. This vehicle has the enclosed roof and cap, but if the new owner would like it supplied with a canvas convertible top that can be arranged for additional cost. The vehicle is in stock condition and configuration but If any other accessories or modifications are desired by the buyer that can be arranged before the vehicle is delivered. The truck can be delivered anywhere and I can arrange shipping. Thank you for looking and please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this vehicle.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]
Thu, 13 Nov 2014As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.
European automakers gear up for Brazilian production
Mon, 07 Oct 2013Brazil is the place to be, apparently. Toyota has been investing in the South American country, as has BMW, which announced a $261 million investment in October 2012, on the heels of an Audi factory announcement in San José Chiapa. The high-end immigration is only set to continue, as Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar-Land Rover have both announced plans to set up manufacturing operations there.
Mercedes is the big news here, as its new facility will see the German manufacturer invest 170-million euros for production of its next-generation C-Class and upcoming GLA-Class. "Brazil is an important future market. With our local production we accept the challenge and take on the competition," noted Andreas Renschler, Management Board member for Production and Procurement at Mercedes-Benz Cars and Mercedes-Benz Vans. Production is expected to begin by 2016.
Jaguar-Land Rover, meanwhile, isn't so concrete in its plans. The news of its investment in South America comes from a job posting for a plant quality manager in Brazil that was picked up by the UK's AutoCar. "Portuguese language skills will be definite advantage" for interested candidates, according to the job listing. The want ad follows on the heels of remarks by Jaguar Land Rover's Dr. Ralph Speth, who said there are "very intensive discussions" with Brazil's government. Unlike Mercedes, there's no mention of which vehicles will be produced in South America, although AutoCar thinks the Freelander, sold in the US as the LR2, is a leading contender.
Jaguar Land Rover building new Special Vehicle Operations facility
Sun, 17 Aug 2014It's only been a couple of months since Jaguar Land Rover announced the formation of its new Special Operations division, and we've already seen a number of vehicles to come out of it. But now the British automaker has announced a new facility that will house its elite skunkworks department.
Set to be built at Prologis Park in Ryton, England, on the outskirts of Coventry, the new Special Vehicle Operations Technical Centre will encompass dedicated production lines, F1-style flexible workshops, a dedicated paint studio and VIP suite for commissioning bespoke projects. JLR will spend some $33 million on the facility that will be home to 150 specialists - 100 of them being new hires.
The first project which the Special Operations division is working on is the F-Type Project 7, but we've already seen more projects in the pipeline - including the upcoming Range Rover Sport SVR - and you can bet there'll be more. The revival of the Lightweight E-Type also falls under Special Operations, but is undertaken by the Jaguar Heritage department located nearby at Browns Lane.
