1967 Jeepster Commando - A Garage Find Improved on 2040-cars
Wolcott, Colorado, United States
The first year of the "New" Jeepster Commando. I found this on a gold mine claim outside Leadville, Colorado and have spent the last year restoring it.
Under the hood is the original Dauntless 225 which runs great. I have replaced the water and fuel pump, battery and cables, distributor cap, rotor, points, plugs and wires. Put a timing light on it and it's got the rhythm of a metronome. It's also sporting a brand new single muffle exhaust system. The hubs work fine and have not been replaced. On the body I did something unique. As part of the body work process we welded the seams where the body panes came together and then smoothed over the seams. The effect is very cool and strong. New rocker panels from the Jeepsterman were installed on both sides. Also, from the Jeepsterman we installed new floor pans. All rust (not much) was grinded and prepped with rustproofing primer. The paint was done to have a bit of a mottled green look to give it some character. 2 coats of semi-gloss clearcoat was done over top. Inside, I had a brand new custom cover made for the dash pad including white off-color stitching. Not sure the pictures will do that justice. Another Jeepsterman product was the custom replacement seat covers that are matches to the originals. The gauges all work as do the accessories. On the inside of the roof I put up a beautiful piece of finished wood. It really looks cool. And of course, that roof can come off. I two-toned the door panel covers and the screws just for fun and it looks great. Almost forgot, it has brand new weatherstripping around the doors and rear hatch. And finally, it got new 235.75.R15 tires today. This is not a frame off restoration but I am very proud of how it came out. I'll be happy to answer any questions but ask that you post them for all to read. |

Chrysler readying 20 Moparized vehicles for SEMA
Tue, 08 Oct 2013The Las Vegas Convention Center has plenty of space for aftermarket companies and automakers to show off their wares, and it looks like Chrysler is taking advantage of the spacious floor plan. At next month's SEMA Show, Chrysler will have a full 20 cars from its six brands decked out with Mopar gear.
As a hint of what is to come, Chrysler released a handful of teaser sketches showing glimpses of modified Jeep Cherokee, Ram 1500, Fiat 500L and Chrysler 300 concept vehicles. The automaker will also use the venue to show off a new line of Jeep Performance Parts offered by the all-new Mopar Off-Road Division. In addition to the images, Chrysler also issued a brief press release - posted below - breaking down some of the "industry-first features" that Mopar has offered in recent years.
Jeep gives Cherokee its yin and yang with Sageland and Urbane concepts
Sat, 19 Apr 2014Among the design concepts Jeep has prepared for Beijing Motor Show this year are a pair of Cherokees dressed up in contrasting schemes.
In one corner we have the Sageland concept pictured above, drawing its inspiration from Shangri-La with an Ivory Peal tri-coat and bronze trim for the grille, fascia appliqués, roof rack, sunroof, mirror caps and exhaust tips. Inside it's all earth tones with light gray Nappa leather seats and red and blue top-stitching inspired by traditional Chinese themes.
Meanwhile the Urbane concept (pictured right) takes the Cherokee in a different direction with steel blue metallic paintjob and black accents. Inside it adopts the theme of Chinese calligraphy with Piano Black accepts and dark red Nappa leather.
NHTSA boss Strickland weighs in on Jeep recall fracas
Sat, 15 Jun 2013Adding yet another chapter to the ongoing Jeep recall story, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) head David Strickland has gone on record to defend the government's request that Chrysler recall 2.7 million out-of-production Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty vehicles after the agency investigated fiery rear-end collisions that have reportedly killed at least 51 people over the years. In statements made to The Detroit News, Strickland said, "We felt very strongly that the process that we undertook and the findings that we made and ... we made the decision to issue a recall request. We do not take that very lightly." The top US auto safety regulator stopped short of telling owners to park their cars until the automaker takes action. "They can make their own risk assessment and their own choices," he said.
Chrysler does not intend to recall the models, insisting the "vehicles met and exceeded all applicable requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, including FMVSS 301, pertaining to fuel-system integrity" when they were manufactured and sold. "The company does not agree with NHTSA's conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective," Chrysler announced last week in a statement. "We believe NHTSA's initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the agency to resolve this disagreement."
Legally, Chrysler has until June 18 to formally respond to NHTSA's request. If the automaker does not take action, NHTSA is expected to issue a formal finding and seek a recall.
