Ford partnering with MIT, Stanford on autonomous vehicle research

Fri, 24 Jan 2014

Ask any car engineer what's the biggest variable in achieving fuel economy targets, and he'll tell you "the driver." If one human can't understand human driving behavior enough to be certain about an innocuous number like miles per gallon, how is an autonomous car supposed to figure out what hundreds of other drivers are going to do in the course of a day? Ford has enlisted the help of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to find out.
Starting with the automated Fusion Hybrid introduced in December, MIT will be developing algorithms that driverless cars can use to "predict actions of other vehicles and pedestrians" and objects within the three-dimensional map provided by its four LIDAR sensors.
The Stanford team will research how to extend the 'vision' of that LIDAR array beyond obstructions while driving, analogous to the way a driver uses the entire width of a lane to see what's ahead of a larger vehicle in front. Ford says it wants to "provide the vehicle with common sense" as part of its Blueprint for Mobility, preparing for an autonomous world from 2025 and beyond.

Ford builds Lightweight Concept with Fusion shell [w/video]

Wed, 04 Jun 2014

It's a fairly well known fact that removing weight from a car is essentially a panacea for many of the modern automobiles problems. Does it handle like crap? Remove weight. Underpowered? Don't add power; trim the fat. Need to improve fuel economy? It's diet time.
Actually executing a major weight reduction program, though, much like with human beings, is no easy task. Unlike you or I, where motivation is the issue, the prohibitive measure in trimming a car's waistline is money. Lightweight materials are expensive, with carbon fiber and carbon-fiber reinforced plastic still primarily in the domain of higher end vehicles. Even aluminum construction, pioneered on a mass-produced level by Audi and Jaguar, is only now starting to make its way into the mainstream, thanks to the upcoming Ford F-150.
With this concept, though, Ford is attempting to show that a mass-produced, lightweight vehicle isn't too far off. This is the Lightweight Concept, and while it may look like a Fusion, it weighs as much as a Fiesta. For reference, the lightest Fusion available to the public is the 3,323-pound, 2.5-liter model with a manual transmission. A manually equipped, 1.6-liter Fiesta, meanwhile, is just 2,537 pounds.

Toyota, Ford and Honda again top Consumer Reports Car-Brand Perception Survey

Fri, 01 Feb 2013

Consumer Reports has released its annual Car-Brand Perception Survey, and the list looks awfully familiar. The top six brands are identical to last year's results, with Toyota, Ford and Honda continuing to occupy the podium. All told, Toyota walked away with 133 points, putting it 15 ahead of second-place Ford. Honda jumped 26 points this year, narrowing Ford's lead to just four points in total.
Consumer Reports polls buyers from across the country on how they see multiple brands in seven categories, including quality, safety, value, performance, design/style, technology/innovation and environmentally friendly/green. Researchers then combine the findings to come up with the total brand score.
While value and performance remain important to buyers, CR found quality and safety are still on top when it comes to significance. Scion and Mitsubishi found themselves at the bottom of the pack with the worst score of all, tied at just six points. Ram, Fiat and Mini filled out the lowest five with scores of seven, eight and 10 points, respectively. You can read the full press release below for more information, or head over to the Consumer Reports site.

DESCRIPTION
The final year of the “Baby Bird” came about in 1957, and with it the most refined attributes. Styling of late-1950’s cars had reached a peak and nearly all manufacturers were sporting fins, art deco design, and enough chrome to sink a ship! This would be the last year of the famous 2-seater roadster for the next 45 years! They are highly prized in collections around the world for the stunning good looks!

This beautiful 1957 Ford Thunderbird is now finished in Starmist Blue with White interior “XK”. Powered by the reliable 312ci 4bbl V8 and Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, it offers a powerful 245 horsepower! It is fitted with Master-Guide power steering, telescopic steering column, front disc brakes with dual master cylinder, working original Town & Country Volumatic AM radio, heater/defrost, added seatbelts, windshield washer, matching porthole hardtop & white vinyl soft top, back-up lights, and electronic clock. Complete with fender skirts, brand new 14x5” Kelsey Hayes chrome wire spoke wheels with whitewall tires, polished engine dress-up kit, this Thunderbird is as wonderful to admire as it is to drive! It was recently serviced to include a complete new power front disc brake conversion with vented rotors, new calipers, stainless steel brake lines, new FOMOCO radiator & heater hoses, belts, spark plugs & wires, distributor cap and rotor, all fluids (coolant, oil, power steering, transmission), new shocks, air filter, newer complete exhaust, and 5 brand new wide whitewall radial tires!

This car received a very impressive, recent restoration of the exterior paint and interior carpet and embossed logo upholstery. Even the trunk was professionally finished with all new matting! Mechanically, the car received much attention under hood both in looks and tuning, so it runs very well! It is also wonderfully detailed throughout! The body and frame are in very good, original shape showing no signs of any rust or rust repair. The original VIN stamp on the forward, passenger frame rail is in perfect condition. The chrome and exterior bright work are all in great condition making this both a wonderful investment for shows, and weekend cruising! It will come complete with owner’s manual, an original brochure, and tire changing equipment.
