1995 Blue BMW 318ti rear wheel drive very sporty 4 cyl.  Have owned this car for two years now and found it very reliable, but our family is getting bigger and this Beemer is looking smaller all the time.  Overall paint/body is in good shape with the usual dings and light scratches, there is however a 1/2"X3" rust bubble developing on the LR wheel well as is visible in the pictures.  The roads in town are pretty rough, and so have had both front control arms and ball joints replaced within the past two months.  I had the mechanic advise me if there was anything else suspension-wise that needed to be addressed and he told me that everything else looks good.  Have done regular oil changes and only used synthetic, BMW recommended oil and added a cleanable K&N flat filter.  Otherwise have not had to do anything mechanical or had any problems with it.  This being Central New York, the road salt has been working on dissolving the muffler, but it hasn't gotten bad to the point yet that it makes any extra noise.  While the rest of the under-carriage has held off the rust, at some point the sway-bar mounts rusted out, which seems to be fairly common with these cars.  I bought new mounts/bushings to have put in but haven't had the opportunity to have them welded in so those parts will go with the car.  Just passed its NYS Vehicle Inspection without issue, gets relatively good milage in town (24+/-) and great mileage on the highway (36+).  The interior looks pretty good for its age, has been completely smoke free, with only the drivers seat suffering from sun damage.  I added a small piece of plexiglass to the underside of stereo/A/C controls to mount our suction-cup GPS to, but no other malicious modifications have been made.  Car has the factory trunk-mounted 6 CD changer which works well, but the anti-skip can't quite keep up with the potholes here in Ithaca so we almost never use it.  It still has winter tires on it, with about 60% tread left; I have two summer tires at 40-50% that will go with the car if you want them.  Buyer will be responsible for shipping, though I will help you out as much as I can.  I am asking a $300 deposit by PayPal within 24hrs of the end of the auction, with the balance due at pick-up and within 14 days.  Once again, it's been a good car and has served our needs, but as our needs are changing I hope that it will find someone else to enjoy it.

BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo gets leaked well ahead of Geneva reveal

Wed, 06 Feb 2013

The great power of the internet has allowed us to get an early first look at the all-new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, a car that is slated to be shown in full at the Geneva Motor Show next month, albeit without many details to go on right now. With pictures leaking out this early in the game, we'd expect that you won't have to wait until March to get the full lowdown, however.
Our first look at the 3er GT reveals a car that is, to our eyes, a tidier piece of design work than its 5 Series GT brother. The long-backside proportions are still a bit ungainly, at least from these images, but they're helped tremendously with the larger wheel/tire package and more aggressive fascia of the sport package.
Expect the 3 Series GT to hit the ground running, with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter inline-six found in the standard 3 Series sedan. BMW's popular xDrive all-wheel-drive system is a virtual lock for the option sheet, too.

BMW 6 Series Convertible gets a little work done for 2015

Sat, 02 Aug 2014

Truth be told, I've never really found the modern BMW 6 Series to be a particularly attractive car, in Coupe, Convertible, or sedan Gran Coupe forms. This current generation certainly looks a whole lot better than the Bangle-fied Six that came before it to my eyes, but on the whole, I find much of the car's design to be fussy and awkward. There's a new 6 Series on the way, scheduled to arrive sometime in 2017 or 2018, but to hold us over until then, BMW is freshening its current range, as evidenced by this convertible prototype our trusty spies recently caught testing.
Will the changes to the current 6 Series be an improvement? Perhaps. Up front, there are restyled headlamps and a new front bumper, and at the rear, BMW has redesigned the LED taillamps to bring them more in line with the rest of the company's offerings. Aside from those modest tweaks, we don't expect much more to change on the Big Six - the interior will likely carry over with some minor tweaks (or new colors), and it's possible the powertrains could be massaged gently for gains in either power, efficiency, or both.
Whether you think this new look is pretty or not, this freshened 6 Series will likely debut sometime next year, while BMW's engineers and designers craft the all-new version. See it from several angles in our gallery, above.

BMW celebrates 30 years of M5 with 600-hp super sedan

Wed, 07 May 2014

It's been 30 years since BMW rolled out the first M5, and while displacement and cylinder count may have fluctuated over those past three decades, output has only increased. The first-generation E28 M5 packed a 3.5-liter inline-six with 252 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. The second-gen E34 model that followed added an extra 100 cc (and later 200 more) to produce 310 hp and 266 lb-ft. The E39 followed with a 4.9-liter V8 churning out 394 hp and 369 lb-ft, replaced by the award-winning 5.0-liter V10 in the E60 with its 500 hp and 380 lb-ft before BMW rolled out the latest model with a 4.4-liter V8, its twin turbos making up for the two dropped cylinders and 600 cc of displacement to produce 560 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. But even that's being left in the dust by the new special edition you see here.
The 30th Anniversary Edition BMW M5 packs that same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, but cranks the output up to a nice, round 600 horsepower and a solid 516 lb-ft of torque to go with it. That makes it more powerful, not only than any M5 that's come before it, but also any of its rivals. The Jaguar XFR-S and Audi RS6 Avant (the latter only available as a wagon and not in North America) both lag behind this ultimate of Ultimate Driving Machines; only the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG trumps it on torque (but not on power), with 531 lb-ft in stock form and 590 in the S-Model.
As a result, the 0-60 time drops from a quoted 4.2 seconds in the stock M5 to a scant 3.7 in the 30th Anniversary edition (just one tick behind that twistier E63 S). The special M5 also comes with the Competition Package as standard, as well as a dedicated control module for the Active M Differential, a special Frozen Dark Silver matte finish, 20-inch alloys and black chrome badges. Special badges abound inside as well, where you'll also find black leather and Alcantara upholstery and aluminum trim. There'll even be a dedicated one-day course offered to owners at The Thermal Club in Palm Springs, CA, to further sweeten the deal.
