Up for sale here is my 2001 Audi allroad that needs transmission work. This was my daily driver until the polar vortex hit Michigan a couple of weeks ago. I started the car at -18o, and started my drive into work (right after I filled the gas tank!) when the transmission started to slip. When I had the car towed, I could see a huge puddle of transmission fluid on the ground. I did some research and found that these transmissions (ZF 5HP19FLA), have an issue where the torque converter seizes to the bushing on the front pump. When this happens it wipes out the front seal and pumps out all of the fluid. At minimum, this transmission will need a new front pump, torque converter, seal, filter, and fluid. The dealer wanted several thousand dollars to replace the transmission, but I thought someone might just want to swap it out with a used unit.

Specs:

  • 166,000 miles

  • 2.7 liter twin turbo engine

  • Clear Michigan Green title

  • Black with black leather interior/walnut trim.

Options:

The base model of this car came with everything, but this vehicle also has the following factory options.

  • Premium Package. Memory for both front seat positions, electronically folding exterior mirrors, Xenon HID self-leveling headlights, and auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors.

  • Convenience Package. Heated front and rear seats, HomeLink remote transmitter, and heated multi-function steering wheel.

  • Bose audio system with subwoofer.

  • Rear side impact air bags.

  • Power sunroof.

  • 17” 5-spoke two-piece wheels.

Exterior Condition:

The overall condition of the car is very good. There are two dings in the driver’s door, but other than that, the car is very straight. The hood has typical stone chips in the paint as any car would at this mileage. There are minor scuffs on the front and back bumper covers along with the driver’s side rear fender flare. The paint is starting to bubble on both front doors down next to the aluminum trim (which means some rust under the paint).

Interior Condition:

The interior is very nice (I’m a non-smoker without kids), and is in almost new condition except for the driver’s floor mat and very slight wear on the driver’s seat. One of the rear cup holders wouldn’t open for me when I was inspecting the vehicle to sell. Also, the interior motion sensor override switch button cover is missing. The car is 100% complete as it should be. It has its retractable cargo cover, retractable dog net, spare tire, tool kit, jack kit, emergency triangle, 12V tire inflator, plastic bag for flat tire, first-aid kit, owner’s manual, both keys, etc.

Tires:

  • Yokohama Advan S4’s at approximately 50% tread.

Service:

  • Regular oil changes with Mobil 1(since 98,000 miles)

  • New hood strut (February 2014)

  • New coolant overflow bottle (January 2014)

  • New OEM Bosch LCD display installed in gage cluster (November 2013)

  • Replaced passenger’s side front air spring (October 2013)

  • New driver’s side front axle shaft (September 2013)

  • New passenger’s side front axle shaft (April 2013)

  • New front brake pads (April 2013)

  • Replaced fuel pump (September 2012)

  • New rear brakes and rotors (July 2012)

  • Replaced driver’s side front air spring (June 2012)

  • New front passenger’s window regulator (May 2012)

  • New spark plugs (June 2009)

  • New front brake pads and rotors (June 2009)

  • New air suspension compressor (June 2009)

Known issues:

  • Transmission

  • The check engine light is on (oxygen sensor)

  • The car has an intermittent ABS sensor fault that I wasn’t able to troubleshoot before the transmission issue. The brakes work fine, but this would cause the car to shut off the ABS system at times.

  • Oil leak. All these 2.7’s start to leak oil later in life.

  • Stone chip in windshield.

  • Rear-view mirror auto-dimming does not work

I’m asking $2500 or best offer.

Please e-mail me with any questions.

The vehicle is currently in my garage and does start and run, but will need to be towed away.

Audi outlasts rivals to win 13th Le Mans title

Sun, 15 Jun 2014

As is so often the case, the 2014 Le Mans was a war of attrition, and Audi managed to prevail once again after all 24 hours had been recorded in the history books, with its Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro claiming first and second places, followed by Toyota in third. Drivers Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer inherited the lead in their No. 2 Audi after the No. 7 Toyota, driven by pole-sitter Kazuki Nakajima, was forced to retire with electrical problems in the 15th hour.
The No. 2 Audi led the race until it was forced to the pits to replace a turbocharger in the 17th hour, allowing the No. 1 Audi, driven by Lucas di Grassi, Marc Gene (who was a last-minute replacement for Loic Duval, who crashed hard during practice) and defending champion Tom Kristensen, led the race until the 21st hour, when it too had to pit with turbocharger issues. This gave the No. 20 Porsche of Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley, and Mark Webber the lead until it was forced off the track with gearbox problems, eventually finishing in 38th position.
In LMP2, the Jota Sport Zytek Z11SN-Nissan driven by Simon Dolan, Harry Tincknell and Oliver Turvey claimed victory, the first five LMP2 finishers all powered by Nissan. Down a level in GTE-Pro, No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 driven by Gianmaria Bruni, Toni Vilander and Giancarlo Fisichella finished one lap ahead of the leading Corvette Racing C7.R. And finally, the No. 95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE driven by Kristian Poulsen, David HeinemeierHansson and Nicki Thiim won the GTE-Am race two laps ahead of a Proton Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.

Audi's diesel-electric supercar is codenamed 'Scorpion'

Mon, 15 Apr 2013

Speculation continues as to the final nature of the diesel-hybrid Audi supercar said to arrive in 2016 or 2017. A previous report in Automobile had the halo coupe, based closely on the R18 etron quattro endurance racer, codenamed R20 and pegged to look like a Le Mans winner for the street with around 700 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque from a twin-turbo V6. Now Car and Driver has updated the gossip with a report that the car is internally called "Scorpion," and it will be even closer to the R18 than supposed.
CD says the heart of the car will use the R18 etron quattro's carbon fiber tub and its engine will be "taken directly" from the race car. That means a 3.7-liter V6 with a single turbo that, in ACO-spec restricted form, outputs 500 hp and 625 lb-ft - CD suspects production output could get to 600 hp - and drives the rear wheels, aided by hybrid motors driving the front wheels. And remember, at Le Mans the R18's hybrid motors can't kick in until they're above a certain speed in order to prevent Audi from getting an advantage coming out of slow corners. A street car wouldn't face that restriction.
The Scorpion would be a fulsome and undiluted example of the technologies Audi has created during its return to sports car racing. Its exterior design hasn't been finalized, with CD citing either the convoluted concept of "a retro take on the future of racing" or packaging that would adhere to the R18's looks. To make sure it is properly appreciated and sells well, production could be limited to the same 333 units as the R8 GT and A1 Quattro.

2014 Audi SQ5

Thu, 03 Oct 2013

No Diesel? No Problem
With the exception of a handful of markets (including the US), the Audi SQ5 was a pioneer for the company's S/RS performance line as it was the first model to wear the badge and also get diesel power. Our general "everything is better with a diesel" mentality was put to the test when we first heard we would be getting a non-diesel SQ5 in the US (despite the availability of the diesel-powered Q5 TDI here already), but as usual we can only blame our federal emissions standards. As Audi tells it, the SQ5 TDI engine would require AdBlue to meet US emissions regulations, and the packaging of such a system just wasn't possible, so the global SQ5's diesel engine was replaced by a gasoline-powered V6 borrowed from the Audi S4/S5. To show that little, if anything, was lost in translation from diesel to gas, we headed to southwestern Colorado to spend an afternoon with the all-new 2014 Audi SQ5.
Our drive program had us taking the SQ5 from Durango, CO to the city of Gateway, before heading to Grand Junction the next morning. There's nothing like spending five hours strapped into a seat, traversing hill and mountain, to truly test a vehicle's comfort and driving dynamics. From the first touch of the SQ5's push-button starter, we knew this was no ordinary Q5. As the engine came to life with a deep burble and raspy pops, and we spent the rest of the day trying to come to terms with the fact that not everything needs a diesel. Wait. What?!
