An obvious continuation of Alfa`s Giulietta-Giulia-Duetto series spyders, the 1973 2000 Spyder, while technically more advanced, retains the charm of the earlier cars which are now collectors items commanding prices into the $50,000 realm. The 1973 year model cars were fitted with the more attractive stainless bumpers, and are pre-CAT/smog exempt in California. It is for good reason that these cars too are fast becoming sought after classics.

This example is a rare find in that it is a one-owner car accompanied by records from new. Sold new by Brown Motors, Inc in San Rafael, CA on October 1st, 1973, and routinely serviced by Brown Motors through 42,000 miles, then by B. Metras Company to its current mileage, this is truly a well cared for car.

In 1977 the motor was completely rebuilt. In 1986 the left front corner was damaged below the headlight. The damage was minor, and repairs were made by Barsottis in Rafael, totaling $1,792. In 1989 the clutch was replaced and radiator re-cored. In 1977 and 1990 the cylinder head was replaced. Countless other major and minor services were performed at regular intervals based on time and mileage. The stack of receipts stands 4 inches high!

Today the car is in excellent running order. The motor sounds good and pulls strong with minimal smoke, if any. The Spica fuel injection is well tuned and problem free. The suspension feels reasonably tight, and the brakes work well. Second gear syncro, a common weak point on Alfas, is excellent when warm and good when cold.

Cosmetically, it is as nice as you could expect of a 33 year old unrestored car. It has been repainted in its original ivory color. The repaint was a reasonably high quality job, appropriate for its value. Even up close, the paint looks great and the color hides any dirt or flaws. The stainless bumpers have some minor dings, and hazing about them, but are complete and basically straight. The stainless bumpers are much more aesthetically pleasing than the rubber bumpers that the later cars suffered from. The windshield has some minor pitting, but no stars or cracks. A beautiful new canvas top was fitted not long ago, which has a near perfect rear window.

The interior is representative of a very well cared for car. The dash, console, and door panel upholstery is excellent. The front seats have probably been redone, and are also excellent, but the rear seats are showing some age and are separating at the seams. The rubber mats have been replaced many years ago, but are again showing only minor wear.

The engine bay, trunk, and underside are mechanically tidy, but not detailed. There is no obvious rust anywhere in the body or chassis- a tribute to its lifelong California residence.

With the car comes the Service Coupon book, a water damaged sedan manual, and a massive stack of receipts for work completed since new, the spare tire, jack and lug wrench, and a small box of spares which will surely be helpful for the new owner.

Marchionne threatens to move Alfa production out of Italy

Fri, 12 Jul 2013

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne was unsurprisingly frank when asked by reporters about potential investments in Italian manufacturing for Alfa Romeo and Maserati, giving the Italian government the ultimatum, "Italy should decide if they want [Alfa Romeo's relaunch] to happen here or not as Fiat and Chrysler have several alternatives." Them's fightin' words.
Fiat's issue with the government stems directly from its courtroom clashes with the Fiom labor union. The two are currently embroiled in proceedings over longer shifts and shorter breaks, as Fiom has so far refused to sign a new contract citing revised labor laws that it says are anti-union.
According to Bloomberg, Fiat will be spending over $2.5 billion on development of eight new Alfas and six new Maseratis, in a bid to wrest some of the luxury pie away from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. But that's only going to happen if the government is willing to play ball and make life easier on Fiat.

Get lost in Evo's sublime 2013 Car of the Year testing

Fri, 08 Nov 2013

Every year Evo stages its Car of the Year test, bringing the best performance cars in the world to one location for an epic shootout. This year the magazine pitted eight CotY finalists against each other on Route Napoleon in Southern France - Evo claims it's the "best road in the world" - and then proceeded to nitpick the smallest of faults on each car until the winner could be named. You see, this year's lineup of machines was just so good that only one car obviously wasn't CotY material from the get-go. Can you guess which one judging from the list below?
- Aston Martin V12 Vantage S
- Audi R8 V10 Plus
