The Volvo 780 Coup? debuted at the International Auto Show in Geneva, Switzerland in 1985, marking Volvo's return to the two-door coup? market following the departure of the 262C in 1981. The 780 became available in Europe in 1986 and in United States a year later.

The 780 was designed and built by Carrozzeria Bertone in Turin, Italy. The hood, trunk, and roof lines were all slightly lower than the standard 700 series profile, and the C-pillar was wider and had a more gradual slope down to the trunk.

In the car's final year, 1991, it was rebadged simply as "Coup?". At this point, the car came only in turbo guise.

Volvo's official production total for the 780 is 8,518 cars built between 1986 and 1991. From 1986 to 1995, Volvo offered a small, sporty coup?, the front-wheel drive Volvo 480, but a successor to the 780 would only be introduced in 1997 when the C70 became available.

Here is what history I have. My son is the 2nd owner after he bought it from a Family who transferred the title 3 times within the Family. The granddaughter inherited it from grandma who got it from grandpa. It was kept in their Family since buying it new. It sat idle for many years after the grandmother died. The grandkids were to donate it as a tax break in 2011 but that’s when my son met the Family while doing volunteer work.

We were a Volvo family ourselves so he knew Volvos were a good car.

My son acquired the car from the Family in 2012. There were no maintenance records because it hadn’t been driven for years. There is the original owners manual and burgundy leather folder.

The front lower end, grill area, is missing or damaged. Inside leather is aged and some front seams are undone. Inside ceiling is worn out. Dirty floor carpet. Original old worn floor mats supplied. Plastic covers on front seat rails are are missing. Both seats move forward for rear access. Missing glove box cover. Windows work and are not cracked. Has original working stereo. Water drips slowly near the water pump. My past Volvo experience says water pump problem. Brakes vibrate. Turbo engine sounds smooth.

Email me for a personal viewing of the car at a US Post Office parking lot 45 minutes north of SF.

Volvo Cars August sales down 4.6% year-on-year

Sat, Sep 3 2022

HELSINKI — Sweden's Volvo Cars saw its August sales fall by 4.6% year-on-year to 43,666 vehicles as the global semiconductor shortage and other disruptions continued to hurt deliveries, the Swedish car maker said in a statement. Demand remained good, but the component shortages as well as power cuts and COVID-19 outbreaks in China interrupted output, the company said. Volvo Cars on Thursday said it would temporarily close its plant in the Chinese city of Chengdu due to local coronavirus restrictions and that a second facility had also been affected by recent lockdowns. The company's shares traded down 0.7% at 0737 GMT, lagging a 1% rise in Stockholm's benchmark index. Why this could be the perfect time for Apple to make a car play

Fri, Aug 31 2018

While the automotive and technology worlds have been pouring billions into autonomous vehicles (AVs) and preparing to bring them to market soon as shared robo-taxis, Apple has mostly sat on the sidelines. Of course, Apple is the last company to ever make its intentions known, and the super-secret tech cult giant hasn't been totally out of the AV game based on the clues that have slipped out of its Cupertino, Calif., citadel over the past few years. Related: Apple self-driving cars are real — one was just in an accident News first broke in 2015 that it had assembled an automotive development team, in part by poaching high-profile talent from car companies, to work on a top-secret self-driving vehicle project code-named Titan. (Thank you very much, Nissan.) Apple also subsequently broke cover by making inquiries into using a Northern California AV testing facility and receiving a permit to test AVs on public roads in California. But then as the AV race started to heat up in the last few years, Apple reportedly began scaling back its car activities by downsizing team Titan. More recently, Apple's car project has shown signs of life with the hiring a high-level engineer away from Waymo and luring one Tesla's top engineers and a former employee back to Apple. It also inked a deal with Volkswagen to provide a technology platform and software to convert the automaker's new T6 Transporter vans into autonomous shuttles for employees at tech company's new campus. That is a far cry from giving rides to Wal-Mart shoppers, like Waymo is doing as part of its AV testing in Phoenix. But this could be the perfect time for Apple to enter the AV market now that ride-sharing is reaching critical mass and automakers and others are planning to deploy fleets of robo-taxis. Apple could easily establish a niche as a high-end ride-sharing service – and charge a premium – given its cult-like brand loyalty and design savvy. The growth of car subscription models could also play in Apple's favor since is already has many people hooked on paying for phones in monthly installments – and eager to upgrade when a new and better model becomes available. To achieve this, some believe Apple will fulfill co-founder and CEO Steve Job's dream of building a car. And as the world's first and only $1 trillion company it's sitting on a mountain of cash that certainly gives it the means. But other tech darlings like Tesla and Google have discovered how difficult it can be to build cars at scale.

Volvo to test 100 self-driving cars on Swedish roads [w/video]

Fri, 06 Dec 2013

Autonomous vehicles are increasingly being tested on public roads around the globe, including Nissan in Japan and Google here in the US, and now Volvo is preparing to test its own self-driving cars on the streets of Sweden. In conjunction with the state government, Volvo's Drive Me project kicks off next year, starting with the development of customer research and infrastructure technology before setting 100 self-driving cars loose on the streets of Gothenburg in 2017.
These 100 cars will be in the hands of customers, and the tests will help Volvo and the Swedish government track varying aspects of self-driving cars including economic benefits, consumer confidence, traffic flow and passenger safety. The technology being developed by Volvo uses not only on-board radar and sensors but also map data gathered from the cloud, and it controls all driving systems including the brakes, throttle and steering. Drivers can engage and disengage the car's autonomous drive mode by pushing a button on the steering wheel, and the technology will also allow for a self-parking feature.
While the cars shown in this demo are S60 models, the test vehicles will be based on Volvo's upcoming Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which underpins future models like the next-gen Volvo XC90. Scroll down for a video and press release marking the announcement.
