What's Significant About This Car?
A horsepower increase from 218 to 227 marks the big news for the 2008 Volvo C70. A few additional improvements to interior functionality are added, as are new colors, Keyless Drive and Volvo's Blind Spot Information System.

Driving Impressions:
The Volvo C70 is every inch a Volvo and that extends from the exceptional comfort of its seats to its satisfying on-road manners. While no one will find the C70 offers the precise handling and exhilarating performance of some of its top competitors, it does a more-than-creditable job of finding the right balance between ride and handling for most luxury coupe-convertible drivers. Though acceleration is more than adequate, frankly we wished the 2.5-liter five-cylinder T5 engine with light-pressure turbocharging produced more than its advertised 227 horsepower. Torque is adequate at 236 pound-feet in what is a flat "curve" from 1500 to 5000 rpm, but a little more horsepower would turn the C70 from a satisfying ride to a thrilling one.

Retractable Steel Hardtop
You have to love the fact that the C70 can be a quiet, cozy closed coupe in a rain shower and a wide-open convertible in the sun at the touch of a button.

Dynaudio Sound System
Green Day or Sinatra, music has rarely sounded as pure and clear as through the C70's audiophile-worthy system.

Interior:
The highly-praised Scandinavian design ethic gets a thorough workout in the no-nonsense interior of the C70. The super-thin central area of the dashboard is a serious "wow." It evokes thoughts of high-end audio equipment. Volvos have long been known for their fantastic seat comfort, and the C70 upholds that reputation, although rear-seat passengers might be a tad disappointed by their available legroom if tall passengers are in front. Handsome leather-covered seats are optional, but more intriguing are seats with the specially-developed Vulcaflex synthetic upholstery that has a skinlike feel. The car's many inboard storage areas are linked to the central locking system, which allows convenient locking even when the top is down.

Exterior:
Volvo execs cut out a big challenge for the design team, asking for a vehicle that looks great with top up and top down, can accommodate four adult passengers and has better-than-average cargo space. Somehow the Volvo design team, aided by the experts at Italy's Pininfarina, achieved all those objectives. Even though the car has a very short nose, it still looks aggressive, while at the same time clearly demonstrating its Volvo family heritage. The car was designed as a coupe first but, according to Volvo designer Fedde Talsma, "the convertible's lines fell cleanly into place." The 12.8-cubic foot trunk capacity is excellent for a car in this class, and it even offers six cubic feet of cargo space with the top retracted.

Volvo details new drive assist features for next XC90 and future models [w/video]

Mon, 08 Jul 2013

Volvo wants us to know what kinds of new technology will be under the sheetmetal of the offerings that will sit on its Scalable Platform Architecture, the first of which will be included on the 2015 Volvo XC90 arriving at the end of next year. The silicon-chip onslaught starts with detection and auto braking for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. The company's animal detection tech now works at night thanks to better cameras and exposure controls.
Also due for the high-riding wagon are road edge and barrier detection with steer assist, a setup that identifies the edge of the road - even ones without markings. The system can steer the car back into its lane if it detects the driver is about to leave the road or collide with a barrier. Adaptive cruise control with steer assist allows the car to not only follow the flow of traffic on a straight road, but steer itself automatically.
Beyond that, the company is planning on other safety advances, but these will rely on automaker cooperation and infrastructure upgrades. Volvo has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium on the subject of standards for communication between cars and wants to have it implemented by 2016. Sensors in traffic lights will enable Green Light Optimum Speed Advisory, which tells a driver how fast to go on a give stretch of road so as not to hit a red light. Weather, road condition, road works and emergency vehicle warnings will also inform drivers of new developments on the road. And autonomous parking, which Volvo has already demonstrated, stands to put a lot of valets out of work since it allows the car to find its own parking space without a driver inside.

Best Large SUVs of 2024

Tue, Dec 19 2023

When it comes down to large SUVs, there's more to consider than price and just how large it is. First, it comes down to what's underneath the skin. Some are built on a truck-like body-on-frame chassis — this would be the traditional, literal definition of an "SUV." Others use car-like, unibody construction, which would make them a crossover. What really matters, though, is how you use them. For most American families, a large three-row crossover is going to be your best bet. They have loads of passenger and cargo space, and deliver superior fuel economy, handling and ride quality than those big traditional SUVs. They're cheaper, too. On the other hand, those traditional large SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition are better-suited for more heavy-duty tasks like towing. Most now have bigger third rows than big crossovers, while extended-length versions like the Chevy Suburban have way more cargo capacity behind their third rows than everything but an airport shuttle. As for luxury large SUVs, they fall into those same two categories as well, with American choices mostly being truck-based. The pros and cons of choosing one over another are similar. Below, you will find our list of the best large SUVs broken down into three categories: large family crossover, large traditional SUV and large luxury SUVs, which comprise both construction types.  Best Large Family Crossovers  |  Best Large Traditional SUVs  |  Best Large Luxury SUVs Best Large Family Crossovers 2024 Honda Pilot Why it stands out: Exceptional storage and cargo space; unique second-row functionality; refined ride; versatile and capable TrailSport; advanced AWDCould be better: Subpar acceleration with lackadaisical transmission and engine response; so-so driver assistance tech Read our full 2024 Honda Pilot Review The Honda Pilot was completely redesigned for 2023. It maintains its predecessor's family-friendly packaging and overall focus, but it has injected a welcome sense of style (especially in the TrailSport pictured above) that makes it stand out much better from the big crossover crowd. The Pilot's restrained adornment and classic proportions are refreshing compared to the increasingly busy Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Subaru Ascent. Let's talk about practicality, though, which is ultimately the Pilot's best attribute.

2025 Volvo EX30 First Drive Review: Little big time

Mon, Nov 6 2023

BARCELONA, Spain — Priced from $36,245, including $1,295 for destination, the new EX30 is VolvoÂ’s least-expensive car. But make no mistake, thereÂ’s nothing cheap about this subcompact electric crossover. From its solid road manners to its clever use of interior textiles, this little cutie is comfortable, competent and bursting with charm. We'll get the EX30 in Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance variants when it goes on sale in the U.S. early next year. Both models are powered by a 69-kilowatt-hour battery pack – 64 kWh of which is usable – that can be replenished at a maximum charging rate of 153 kW. Volvo says youÂ’ll only need 27 minutes to take the EX30 from a 10% to 80% state of charge, but thatÂ’s assuming the battery is properly preconditioned, the charger youÂ’re plugged into actually works correctly, the planets are all aligned, etc. The Single MotorÂ’s, um, single motor is mounted to the rear axle, producing 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. ThisÂ’ll get the EX30 to 60 mph in a perfectly respectable 5.1 seconds, and Volvo estimates a 275-mile driving range for this configuration – though not if youÂ’re testing that aforementioned launch time on the regular, of course. The Twin Motor Performance has the same rear drive unit, but adds a second motor to the EX30Â’s front axle for a total output of 422 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. ThatÂ’s a whole heck of a lot of power – even for a 4,140-pound crossover – and my goodness, does this EX30 scoot. Put the EX30 Twin Motor into its Performance AWD setting, stomp the throttle and youÂ’ll hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. That makes the EX30 VolvoÂ’s quickest accelerating production car ever. Nifty as that is, however, after a day of driving the EX30 on winding Spanish country roads and darting through traffic in BarcelonaÂ’s busy city center, I think the Single Motor is the way to go. Remember, even the pokiest EVs still feel quick thanks to instant electric torque, and at no point does the Single Motor EX30 ever feel like it canÂ’t get out of its own way. Beyond that, though, the EX30 Single Motor is simply more fun to drive. At 3,858 pounds, the rear-drive EX30 is 282 pounds lighter than the AWD version, and all that weight comes off the front end. This makes VolvoÂ’s tiny EV feel more playful and agile while cornering, especially with the well-weighted steering – not to mention the fun-to-handle squircle wheel.
