Suburban parents are the Volvo XC70's prime target. It's a large station wagon with a brawny look for dad and sensible features for mom. It's upscale enough that your neighbors won't look down on you, but affordable enough to keep sending the kids to summer camp.

Packed with safety features, an entirely competent six-cylinder engine and some nifty innovations, it makes the hell of a car to the upwardly mobile, yet still overwhelmed, parent.

Exterior
The new XC70 is certainly more interesting to look at than past versions. The hood has a noticeable bulge, and some fancy hazard lights bedazzle the front bumper. Around back, giant vertical taillights overpower the look. The end result is fashionable, but still conservative.

The XC70 definitely stands out among family-haulers. For one, it's a station wagon, and a somewhat upscale one. Simple Swedish design wins out in this group; picking the XC70 might be a value choice, but it still makes a statement in the style department.

Interior
Like the S80 sedan it's based on, the 2008 XC70's interior is a huge leap forward in refinement and ergonomics, and it has plenty of nifty features, too.

The materials are exceptionally pleasing to the touch. The doors are finished in leather with lots of padding to make them nice and soft. A nicely padded center armrest is another nice touch, but as any driver knows, it's the seat that matters most.

Both the driver and front passenger seats are exceptionally comfortable, leaning toward the cushy end of the firm/cushy meter of car-seat testing.

From that perch, you'll take in an elegantly simple dashboard with a nicely grained finish and radically cool gauges — there are digital information displays inside the tachometer and speedometer. The center controls are on Volvo's trademark "floating stack," a thin console that connects from the middle of the dashboard to the shifter. It's always a neat effect, no matter what car it's in.

Going & Stopping
The XC70 comes with a 235-horsepower inline-six-cylinder engine that delivers competent power in city and highway driving. Despite the size of the wagon, it is completely comfortable at high speeds.

The XC70 is rated at 15/22 mpg city/highway. While that may sound a bit low, remember this is a rather large all-wheel-drive vehicle.

Ride & Handling
The XC70 is a good car and it handles like a suburban wagon should. The ride is extremely pleasant on both rough surfaces and smooth highways. Road trips in this car will be a breeze for everybody. There was very little road or wind noise.

Because it's a wagon and has a low center of gravity, there isn't much body lean in turns. Its offroad chops and high ground clearance mean you can take the XC70 on snowy offroad paths to a mountain cabin — or to one of those awful strip-mall entrances — knowing you won't scrape the bottom of the car on anything.

Cargo & Utility
It truly is difficult to find a similarly priced luxury SUV that's as capable and comfortable a cargo-hauler as the XC70. The rear cargo area is simply huge. It's both long and wide, and I was able to fit full-size golf bags across the back perfectly. The load floor's low height also makes everyday tasks like loading and unloading groceries or luggage much easier to handle.

There's also a very well-done hook system built into the cargo floor. Heavy-duty metal hooks slide forward and back and flip up into place easily. Once flipped up, they lock tight so cargo nets and other tie-downs will be secure. It's so simple that it's a wonder more automakers don't do it.

The XC70's rear seats fold down flat with one easy motion.

Safety
Safety and Volvo go together hand-inhand, and the XC70 has plenty of standard safety features. Because cars from other manufacturers score just as highly in crash tests, Volvo has to do even more now. You can win the top award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety — which the 2008 XC70 has — but even then you're on the same playing field with the other winners, and that field has doubled in the past year. So besides the array of airbags, stability control, tire pressure monitoring system and other standard safety features, Volvo has added some intriguing safety options that go beyond the norm, conveying a sense that the car is cradling the family in a security blanket.

In the rare chance the kids are distracting you, Volvo's blind-spot monitor acts as a nanny for the driver, reminding you there's someone in your blind spot in case you haven't been constantly eyeballing all three mirrors.

To really win over the family man or woman, the XC70 comes with built-in booster seats. They deploy in two stages with an easy push of a button and can accommodate children between 33 and 80 pounds.

12 best hybrid SUVs for 2022

Tue, Jun 15 2021

If you're searching for the best hybrid SUV, the truth is there actually aren't that many choices. While there's an endless sea of those powered solely by gasoline, those that add batteries and superior fuel economy to the mix are few and far between. The very good news, however, is that the choices you have are actually excellent. The top-selling and top-rated Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are not only available as hybrids, for instance, but are actually at their most appealing as hybrids.  Luxury hybrid SUVs are a different story. While Lexus offers each of its crossover SUVs as a conventional hybrid, those of other brands are by and large plug-in hybrids that provide a relatively brief amount of all-electric propulsion, superior fuel economy and higher prices that are somewhat countered by EV tax rebates. We include both conventional hybrids and plug-in hybrids in the below list of best hybrid SUVs. All are listed alphabetically within each category. Best small hybrid SUVs   |   Best midsize hybrid SUVs Best luxury hybrid SUVs   |   Best luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs Best small hybrid SUVs Honda CR-V Hybrid Why it stands out: Best-in-class back seat space; hybrid's distinctive EV-like power delivery; middle lower LATCH anchorCould be better: Antiquated and glitchy tech interface; a bit dull Hybrid fuel economy: 38 mpg combined (AWD only) Read our 2022 Honda CR-V Review Consider the CR-V the baseline for any compact SUV search. Objectively speaking, it's tough to beat due to its massive cargo capacity, voluminous back seat, well-balanced driving dynamics, competitive pricing and features, strong safety ratings and well-regarded reliability. In terms of its hybridness, we like that Honda's distinctive hybrid system sees most of its propulsion handled by the electric motor (the engine rarely powers the wheels directly), resulting in a more EV-like, torque-rich power delivery and a less obtrusive gas engine. For the vast majority of compact SUV buyers, and especially families, the CR-V Hybrid checks every box.    Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Why it stands out: Beautiful interior; excellent infotainment and safety technology; traditional automatic transmissionCould be better: No spare tire; styling a tad outrageous Hybrid fuel economy: 37-38 mpg combined (AWD only) Plug-in hybrid electric range: 33 miles Plug-in hybrid fuel economy: 80 MPGe Read our 2022 Hyundai Tucson Review The Tucson is the new kid in town and it's made quite an entrance.

Volvo launches next-gen Sensus Connect infotainment system [w/videos]

Fri, 10 Jan 2014

To borrow a line from another automaker, the Volvo S60 has the power to surprise - it's likely not top of mind for most entry-level luxury sedan buyers, but it's good enough that it probably should be. There's long been one pretty serious chink in its armor, though, and that goes for the company's entire model line: infotainment. The Swedish marque's offerings just haven't been that feature-rich, but Volvo is working to improve things with its updated Sensus Connect, a suite of functions just launched at this week's CES in Las Vegas.
The new system updates center on cloud-based connectivity advancements that include a novel Park&Pay feature that allows drivers to search for parking and pay for their space from the comfort of their car. Other functions that show off the diversity of Sensus Connect include embedded, Pandora-streaming internet radio, Wikipedia, remote start via smart phone, dealer appointment booking, destination attraction searches and an available wifi hotspot.
All of this increased functionality sounds like a big step in the right direction, and Volvo is noting it has refreshed the system's interface with "graphically themed center and driver displays" along with improved voice control and text-to-speech capabilities.

Best cars for snow and ice in 2023 and 2024

Tue, Jan 23 2024

What's the best car for snow? The real answer is "the one with winter tires." What do we mean by that? You could have the finest, most advanced all-wheel-drive system or four-wheel drive in the world, but if you're running all-seasons (the spork of tires), your fancy four-wheeler won't matter much. The odds are, any vehicle on the road running good winter tires will probably perform adequately in slippery, slushy and/or snowy road conditions. (Here's a more complete explanation of why winter tires are totally worth it). In other words, you don't really need any of the cars on this list. With a set of winter tires, countless others will do the job, and even these will be at their best with proper rubber. You can find a variety of winter tires for your car here at Tire Rack. Keep in mind that you will need a full set of four snow tires for safety and performance, no matter what you're driving. The days of your dad putting just two snows on the family truckster to get it moving in a straight line are long gone. Don't get us wrong, getting a car that performs well in snow and ice is still a worthy criteria for car buyers. According to the U.S. Transportation Department, 70% of Americans live in places that get snow and ice. And much of the country has been blasted with arctic air for much of the new year. So let's look at the cars. First, we're highlighting choices for a variety of buyers and price points. Second, we're not just considering snow; we're considering general wintery conditions people will experience driving to work or school. As such, these are all choices with advanced all-wheel-drive systems, usually with "torque-vectoring" systems that not only automatically shunt power front and back, but side to side between the rear axles. Most have extra ground clearance for getting through deep snow, and we prefer those vehicles with more responsive steering, throttles and transmissions that provide a greater sense of vehicle control in slippery conditions.    Acura RDX Read our Acura RDX Review Acura's Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system was one of the first to offer torque-vectoring, and besides often being touted for its ability to greatly enhanced dry-road handling, its benefits in the slick stuff can be profound. It's actually surprising that Acura hasn't leaned into this capability further by offering more rugged versions of its vehicles.
