The time has come to sell my baby. I just don't have the time or space to finish what I started. For those of you not familiar with this car, it is a 300+ hp, AWD, 6-speed monster with the luxury and safety that Volvo is well known for. The color combination makes it even more rare!

My 2004 Volvo V70R wagon has been with us for about two years. I purchased it with about 185k miles on it, and it is a wonderful car. It was traded into a dealership I worked at, but I got the chance to meet the owner. He had purchased it at about 97,000 miles, and it was his daily driver. As an outside sales rep, he did a LOT of miles, all highway, and needed the car to be in TOP shape to make sure he could get to his appointments without fail.

The vehicle had many OEM parts installed while he owned it - power steering pump, rack, rear struts, fuel pump ass'y are highlights. He also took the liberty and pleasure of upgrading with $1,000's in tasteful and high quality aftermarket goodies. He fitted a Bell FMIC (front mount intercooler), with silicone piping, Eurosport stainless steel cat-back, upgraded hybrid turbo from Viva Performance, software tune from a RICA PPC handheld programmer, K&N drop in filter, drilled/slotted rotors, OZ Ultraleggeras with Michelin Pilot Sports, M1 Abrahms shift knob, and a boost/voltmeter gauge setup next to the radio inside. The car was also fitted with a Volvo OEM trailer hitch setup.

While driving on the highway, the vehicle stalled out. Unable to start, I towed the vehicle home. After checking compression,it had dropped to 60PSI. I removed the head and had it completely gone through by a machine shop. Two valves were slightly bent, so they were replaced, along with all the valve stem seals. The head was checked and cleaned, and reassembled, the valves were adjusted, and I reinstalled it, along with a brand new OEM timing belt kit, water pump, thermostat, and belt. I also checked and replaced the angle gear (common failure on these cars), with a brand new OEM angle gear. Once back together, the vehicle still had 60-70psi across the board, and after a leakdown test the prognosis was that the rings had given out. The verdict was a fresh bottom end rebuild, with the minimum being rings, maybe some pistons depending on what we found when we took it apart. I estimated the work (removing the engine and reinstalling it myself), accounting for machine work and new pistons, to be around $1500. This would be much less if the pistons could be used again. I also have access to a complete running used motor for $2000 - you could install this and sell the refurbished head, or swap the refurbished head on to the lower end and sell the stock head.

This was a VERY fast car, with over 320 HP at the wheels (dyno tested), manual transmission, all wheel drive, super comfortable, and safe. It really is the car that does everything. It won't take much to finish and when you do, it'll be good for another 200k miles. Aside from the bottom end work, the car doesn't need anything. The front struts are believed to be original, but did not seem worn and aren't leaking. The brakes are all in excellent order. The car comes with a set of almost new Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 snow tires. With these, the car was UNSTOPPABLE in the snow. The Michelin Pilot Sports are brand new (2) and about 500-1000 miles (2) - these are over $300/tires!

I considered parting the car out, but again, I'm short on time and space, and it's too rare and incredible a car to break into pieces. If you want one car to do it all, and have a blast doing it, look no further.

Happy bidding!

Geely wants to be a tech-sharing 'friend' of Daimler in $9B bet

Sat, Feb 24 2018

Chinese carmaker Geely has built up an almost 10-percent stake in Daimler in a $9 billion bet by its chairman that he can access the Mercedes-Benz owner's technology in the growing battle for the future of automotives. The purchase by Li Shufu, Geely's founder and main owner, means China's largest privately-owned automaker is now the biggest shareholder in Germany's Daimler. Geely said on Saturday there were no plans "for the time being" to raise the stake further. Instead, it will seek to forge an alliance with Daimler, which is developing electric and self-driving vehicles, to respond to the challenge from new competitors such as Tesla, Google and Uber. "No current car industry player is likely to win this battle against the invaders from outside without friends. To achieve and assert technological leadership, one has to adapt a new way of thinking in terms of sharing and combining strength. My investment in Daimler reflects this vision," Li said. "Daimler is pleased to announce that with Li Shufu it could win another long-term orientated shareholder, which is convinced by Daimler's innovation strength, strategy and future potential," the German company said in a statement. Geely officials plan to travel to Stuttgart to meet Daimler executives early next week and also hope to meet top German government officials in Berlin, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The Chinese firm plans to use the meetings to underline that it intends to be a supportive long-term investor, they said. Daimler had no immediate comment on any meetings. Geely and the German economy ministry declined to comment. Chinese investors in German technology companies have tended to take a consensual approach, buying incremental stakes in companies such as robotics firms Kuka and Kion, typically after long consultation with management and other stakeholders. In November, Geely asked Daimler to issue new shares so it could buy a stake, as a way to access Mercedes-Benz technology for electric cars and trucks, including battery technology, to help Geely comply with a Chinese crackdown on pollution. But the German company turned down the offer saying it did not want to dilute existing shareholders, sources at the time told Reuters. Li changed tactics, and quietly amassed a stake of 9.69 percent worth $9 billion at Daimler's current share price.

Volvo 850 T5 R pickup conversion is ready for a cool yule

Mon, 10 Dec 2012

There are plenty of ways to get your holiday tree home from the farm, but few are so classy as this Volvo 850 ute. Built in Sweden and shipped to Belgium, the car wears all of the necessary kit to pass as a 850R, and with a turbocharged 2.3-liter five cylinder under the hood, this creation should have no trouble dashing through the snow. Looks like a mighty fine use of an otherwise derelict Volvo wagon to us, though we have to imagine all that torque steer and no weight over the aft would make for all sorts of silliness once the roads went slick.
Still, if it were our Sawzall, we'd be happier with the keys to a certain BMW M5 utility in our pocket. Or, you know, the 3 Series conversion BMW whipped up not too long ago. You can head over to Autofans.be for a closer look at the 850 ute.

We dialed a random Swede, talked about not driving Volvos

Fri, Apr 8 2016

The Swedish Number is now a thing. It's a cool thing. You dial, a random Swede picks up, and you chat. Or, in my case, you dial and a random Brit living in Sweden for the past six year picks up and you chat. Since I was calling on behalf of Autoblog, when I got Martin from the small coastal town of Sundsvall, on the phone, we talked about cars, Volvos (natch), and cold-weather testing. Oh, and about plugging in his regular Toyota Prius. ABG: I was able to come to Sweden and test Volvos a month or so ago. Do you drive a Volvo? Martin: [laughs] No. I think Volvo is a fantastic car. It truly is an amazing car, but no. My girlfriend has a company car, so we drive a hybrid Toyota Prius. ABG: And how does that work in the cold winters? It obviously cuts down on the environmental problems. Martin: No problem at all. Because we have these cold winters, like you do get in the States as well, where we park our cars, we've got electricity posts where we can plug in the cars. Motor car engines have a heater, so you can have the heater going for some time before you get into the car. So it warms up the engine and there's a socket inside the car to warm up the inside of the car as well. It's very efficient. You just need to remember to set the timer when you climb out of the car and connect the cable. It obviously cuts down on the environmental problems as well because your car is already warm before you start them. ABG: I know that makes them overall more efficient, I just didn't know it could work with any car. It used to be you would keep the diesel engine blocks warm, but this works for pretty much any car in Sweden? Martin: Yes. Our temperatures here can vary. We do tend to get roundabout -18 to -25C [0 to -15F], where I live, sometimes. Normally, in the winter, we always plug the car in to make it more environmentally friendly, for starters, and then it's a nice warm car when you get in. The coldest I remember it getting here was -36 [-33F]. In the north of Sweden they've had, on record, -56 [-69F]. ABG: That's too cold. Martin: That is cold, yeah. Most countries, now, use the north of Sweden to test their cars because of the ice. Volvo S90 Prototype View 15 Photos ABG: That's actually why I came over there, to test out the new XC90s and S90s. Martin: Is that your job, then? ABG: I don't test the cars for the companies, but I test them for Autoblog. They'll invite us to test the vehicles so we can see for ourselves what the vehicles do in cold weather.
