For those unfamiliar with this car, the Volvo T-5R was introduced for 1995. Developed in part with Porsche, the R included a special suspension with lowered ride height, special graphite colored “Titan” 17x7” wheels and P205/45VR17 Pirelli P-Zero tires, unique ground effects, and a special interior with black alacantra and leather seats and dark walnut wood trim. The R used the same Mitsubishi TD04-15g turbocharged 2.3 liter 5-cylinder engine as the 850 T-5 but had a special ECU which allowed 1.3 pounds of extra turbo boost. That bumped horsepower from 225 to 243 and made for one of the fastest production Volvos up to that time. The car could reach 60 MPH in under 7 seconds and complete the quarter mile in under 15 seconds. For 1996, the T-5R's name was changed to 850R. Red, white and black exterior colors replaced the yellow, black, and dark green of the T-5R. Tan/birch joined black/dark walnut as an interior choice. The interior seat material was reversed to alacantra on the main portion of the seat and leather on the bolsters. The 17x7” rims were a new “Volan” style. Beyond that, the car was nearly identical to the T-5R. This first generation R was sold from 1995-97. Approximately 10,000-12,000 were sold worldwide over the three model years, so these are very rare and likely future collectables. This 1996 wagon version is one of the best you will find. It spent the vast majority of its life in Redmond, WA and San Diego, CA. As you will see from the photos, the underside of the car is amazing for a 152k mile example. It even has its original exhaust system, which is still in great shape. I do not believe the car has ever seen salt or snow (I stored it during the winter in IL). The paint and interior are in excellent condition for a 18 year old car. Everything on the car works, including the power windows and seats, gauges, and of course the A/C system, which blows ice cold. I even replaced all of the dashboard lights, which are commonly burned out on these. Engine pulls strong and transmission shifts properly. Car tracks straight and true. This wagon is all stock except for an ARD Stage 1 tune, which has added approximately 35 horsepower and 45 lbs/ft of torque, making the car a real blast to drive! I still have the original "628" code ECU, which is exclusive to the R models. I did not exchange this with ARD because these ECUs are so rare, it wasn't worth giving it up for the $75 core charge. If you plug it back in the car will be back to 100% stock. I have added many new parts recently, including front and rear brake pads and rotors, a brake fluid flush, new shocks and struts (Boge/Sachs OEM replacements), spark plugs, wires, and distributer cap, air filter, full timing belt service (belt, tensioner and water pump), PCV system, and Bridgestone Potenza S-04 tires. I have also done some cosmetic work -- such as re-dyed black body trim, refinished Volan rims, and repainted front spoiler. It breaks my heart to sell this R but it's my second car and I just purchased a rental property. So at this point, I need all of the extra money I can get for rehab and reserves. So, sadly, my extra car must go. As to bidding, please do not if you are not serious about buying. If you have less than 5 bids, or negative feedback, please e-mail me prior to placing your bid. The car is for sale locally so I reserve the right to cancel the auction without notice. I do not reveal my reserves but it is set at a fair level for this car’s condition. Of course, feel free to contact me if you have any questions whatsoever. I will be happy to answer them. Good luck! |

Volvo EX30 endures a side impact crash test with an EX90
Mon, Apr 29 2024Before Volvo launched the EX90, the Swedish automaker — already known as a pioneer in safety — repeatedly stressed how much work it had done to raise the bar for safety in its new electric SUV. Almost every new release included lines like, "The standard safety in the Volvo EX90 is also higher than any Volvo car before it," and "The Volvo EX90 has an invisible shield of safety enabled by our latest sensing technology, inside and outside." But these focused on the car's electronic suite of sensors and cameras watching everything from the road ahead and behind to the driver's state of fatigue. The company did the same during the launch of the EX30, writing that its new compact electric vehicle protects all occupants "through state-of-the-art restraint technology, as well as top-notch structural design that fulfills our ambitious in-house safety requirements — designed to prepare our cars for various real-world scenarios." To prove a point about the safety of the EX30, Volvo's in-house crash-test lab performed a side impact test, running its largest car, the EX90, into the side of its smallest, the EX30. We don't get to see any interior view of the EX30 during the test or afterward. In an Automotive News Europe video about the crash and the results, Lotta Jakobsson from the Volvo Cars Safety Center says the data showed that the two "small-sized females" sitting on the struck side "were well protected" in the crash, with minimal infliction of injury. The physical design of both cars helps make this happen. The EX30 was designed to disperse all of its forces around the structure of the car for "balanced interaction" during an event. That's pretty standard stuff. On the EX90, a piece of the lower front structure juts ahead of the vehicle's primary safety structure. As ANE Managing Editor Doug Bolduc puts it, that lower structure is "specifically designed to help it absorb a lot of the power of a crash with a smaller vehicle ... that is to not only provide protection to the passengers of the EX90 but also to provide protection to the passengers of the EX30." The result is "less damage than you might have expected from the larger car onto the smaller car." Check out the vid and for Jakobsson's take on how current trends in structural, passive, and active safety won't rid the world of crashes, but they are reducing injuries while at the same time making crashes less common.
2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volvo XC40 Recharge score high in IIHS tests
Thu, Apr 22 2021New electric cars continue their streak of impressive crash test results. The two latest to go through Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing are the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E and the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge. The former earned a Top Safety Pick award, and the latter picked up the Top Safety Pick+ commendation. Both vehicles got the top "Good" rating in every crash test, as well as the "Superior" rating for vehicle-to-vehicle collision prevention. They deviate when it comes to headlights and vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention. Because the Volvo has headlights rated "Good" on all trims, it got that extra "+" on its Top Safety Pick award. The Ford also has high-rated headlights available, but the standard units got the second lowest rating of "Marginal." As for the vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention, the Volvo received the second-highest "Advanced" rating, while the Ford was rated "Superior." Among the electric cars IIHS has tested, the Ford and Volvo continue a streak of high scores. The organization has evaluated the Audi E-Tron in both its body styles, as well as the Tesla Model 3, both of which get the Top Safety Pick+ rating. As a result of the XC40 Recharge's test score, Volvo pointed out that it is the only automaker whose entire lineup has received a Top Safety Pick+ rating. Volvo Concept Coupe may see limited production
Wed, 25 Sep 2013Despite the impressive production debuts from Porsche and BMW at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show - the 918 Spyder and the i8, respectively - there was one car that captured the attention of the press and the public alike, enough so that we awarded it our overall top pick of the show: the Volvo Concept Coupe. Most concepts never make it to production, but the car's reception has been so positive that Volvo's board of directors is considering to produce it in limited quantities, Auto Bild reports. Italian coachbuilder Bertone could handle the limited production run.
Styled after the classic P1800, the Volvo concept was similar to the new Porsche and BMW in that it was equipped with a high-performance hybrid drivetrain. But Volvo took a different route from there, giving the sleek coupe a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor at the rear axle. All in, the combo is good for 400 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque.
If the Concept Coupe makes it to production, it may not get the trick hybrid drivetrain mentioned above, Motor Athority reports, but a milder plug-in hybrid setup or even just a conventional fuel-burning engine. In any case, it would be a treat if Volvo produced a fully functional, street-legal Concept Coupe, though at that point we're thinking it would be due for a name change.
