Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel L on 2040-cars

1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel. I bought this car about a year ago from its first owner. It had 135000 miles on it, I had a little work done on it, and started driving it. I drove it to Atlanta Georgia and back, from Missouri without a hitch, except for hitting a bolt in the road and ruining a tire. The car has little to no rust. It came as a gold color, I very lightly scuffed it with a green pad and painted it with OD Krylon to help preserve it. (I liked the green better than a standard primer color.) After checking tires, oil, coolant, and fuel levels, I would not be afraid to drive across the country in this little car. Although it is not very high up on the list of creature comforts, it hums right along. The bad: AC does not work, but compressor is free and original owner said it worked fine until he replaced the radiator. If heater is levered on, it will smell like antifreeze. If you endure this, eventually your antifreeze level will go down. Must monitor. Rattle in front end on bumpy roads. (Bushings??) I drive mostly highway so it isn't that bad. It does drive nice on pavement. Rear doors open from inside only. Passenger window does not roll down. Speedo, odo, fuel gage, dash lights inoperable. This happened on the trip to GA. Luckily I had already had a chance to get a idea of the mileage this car gets. 1 tire pretty worn, was one of two spares; after hitting bolt in road. Uses about a quart of oil every other fillup (1000 miles or so) if you drive it hard on the interstate 65-70 mph. You will get 50mpg at this speed, and that with a very loaded-for-a-trip load. Headliner missing but carpet padding is installed for insulation. Missing a rubber cap on the end of the bumper, and various other little stuff.
The Good: New struts 3 newer tires New windshield Newer Radio/Mp3/CD player Spare Fuel Can is 2.5 gallons, is full, does not leak or smell. 50mpg hwy/ 43mpg mixed driving. I have read that this car is capable of 60mpg with the right tuning. 3 spare wheels not on car, one has useable tire that holds air well on it.

1000-hp Mk1 VW Golf is terrifyingly cool
Tue, 04 Jun 2013There are plenty of things to love about the Mk1 Volkswgen Golf. The machine's horsepower isn't one of them. From the factory, the little hatch cranked a breathy 112 horsepower from the most robust form of its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Boba motoring, however, has taken that figure and multiplied it by a factor of nearly 10. If 1,000 horsepower sounds terrifying in a machine with a wheelbase of just 94.5 inches, it should. A massive Garrett GTX4202R turbo force-feeds the little mill through a tweaked 16-valve KR head. The crew calls the beast the 16Vampir, and we think that's fitting.
Of course, we'd wager you quit reading right about the time you set your eyes on that headline. Those of you who've stuck around this long can point yourselves below to see the maniacal creation in action. You won't be disappointed.
Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes also under diesel emissions scrutiny
Sat, Oct 10 2015The controversy over Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal isn't limited to the US. In Europe, where diesel engines are far more popular, the issue is shining a harsh light on the NEDC emissions test. As already known, the evaluation does a poor job of reflecting real-world production of NOx, and it appears a significant number of automakers are affected. The Guardian in the UK has been reporting on real-world test results from a company called Emissions Analytics. After the latest round of checks, vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi were found to generate far more NOx than they should. The newspaper also published similar results for Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Fiat, Volvo, Jeep, Citroen, VW, and Audi. On average, the figures are about four times over the limit of producing the pollutant. Unlike VW and its defeat device, these automakers aren't actually breaking the rules. The vehicles perform up to the NEDC lab test for emissions, but those results simply aren't translated to the street. "The VW issue in the US was purely the trigger which threw light on a slightly different problem in the EU - widespread legal over-emissions," Nick Molden from Emissions Analytics said to The Guardian. A big fight to decide the future of this issue appears to be on the horizon. Automakers claim that they can't meet the next round of tightening emissions regulations and are asking for compromises. Although, spokespeople for Mercedes and Honda told The Guardian that the brands would be in favor of the stricter rules. Meanwhile, some European governments began backtracking their support of diesels well before this scandal came to light. The added scrutiny certain hasn't helped the future of the oil-burner. Volkswagen drops first teaser of next-gen T6 Transporter
Fri, Mar 20 2015The history of Volkswagen's line of boxy Transporter vans goes all the way back to 1950, and the early models' shape likely ranks in fame with the Beetle. VW Commercial Vehicles is now teasing the next step in that legacy with this sketch of the new T6. Judging by this shot, VW is sticking with the van's familiar, square shape. Although this sketch makes the front end look a bit more curvaceous and possibly with a shorter overhang than the current T5. Finding out the truth won't take long because the T6 will debut on April 15, and it will go on sale in the UK by the end of the year. These days the US commercial van segment is rapidly expanding with new models filling the market. Autoblog reached out to VW spokesperson Mark Gillies to find out if the latest Transporter might come across the Atlantic. "LCVs are under consideration, but there are no plans" to bring the T6 to the US at this time, Gillies said. When it made its public debut in 1950, few could have predicted the enormous impact the Transporter would have in revolutionising the commercial vehicle market, creating a timeless automotive icon in the process. Whilst the Transporter has evolved dramatically during that time the philosophy and vision that created the original still holds true. Getting the job done efficiently and reliably has been at the heart of the Volkswagen philosophy for the past 65 years. Its reputation for rugged reliability has endured over the decades to make the Volkswagen Transporter one of the world's best-selling light commercial vehicles. The sixth-generation Transporter will go on sale in the UK later this year. (ends)
