VW Jetta and Golf family earn IIHS TSP+ [w/video]
Thu, Aug 13 2015Volkswagen is the latest manufacturer to add vehicles to the growing list of cars, trucks and SUVs certified as Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The non-profit has awarded its highest safety ranking on the 2016 Golf and Jetta families. Earning a TSP+ rating, while increasingly common, is still a challenge for automakers thanks to IIHS' strict testing regime. Vehicles must net "Good" ratings – the highest grade available – in the moderate overlap, front, side, roof, and head-restraint tests, while also scoring an "Acceptable" rating on the notoriously tricky small-overlap test. On top of that, the automated crash-prevention systems need to be rated as either "Advanced" or "Superior." For 2016, the Jetta, Golf, and their performance variants retained 2015's "Good" ratings across the board, while also receiving an "Advanced" crash prevention rating, thanks to the new-for-2016 Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking systems. "This year's Top Safety Pick+ awards demonstrate Volkswagen's longstanding commitment to vehicle safety and the development of innovative technologies," Mark Barnes, VP of Sales for VW of America, said in the attached statement. "Our available driver assistance systems and safety features show Volkswagen's commitment to introduce systems that were once only seen on high-end luxury and premium vehicles, such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning." Scroll down for the official press release from VW and video of the crash test (and yes, that's a 2015 shown in both the lead image and video – the only difference between the two years was the availability of more advanced crash-prevention systems). 2019 Toyota Corolla vs. compact hatchbacks: How they compare
Mon, Apr 30 2018So you've read what we thought about the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Oh, you didn't? Well, click to your left, we'll still be here. Just made some coffee, we're good for a while. Welcome back! Wasn't that riveting? The blue paint sure is bright, eh? Well, now you must be wondering how that new 2019 Corolla stacks up with all the other hatchbacks. And, despite long thinking that hatchbacks were doomed, there are actually quite a lot of them these days. So many, in fact, that we couldn't fit them all in our space-limited comparison chart. So, with apologies to the Hyundai Elantra GT, Kia Forte and the dead-man-walking Ford Focus, these were the cars we chose based on sales and competitiveness: the Honda Civic Hatchback, Mazda3 5-Door, Volkswagen Golf, Chevrolet Cruze and Subaru Impreza. We also included the outgoing Corolla iM for reference. If you think we've left something of interest out, you can always create your own comparison. Performance and fuel economy There is but one king here, and its name is Civic. While the sedan and coupe come with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 158-horsepower four-cylinder that's less potent than the Corolla's, the hatchback comes standard with the 1.5-liter turbo that aces the segment in terms of both acceleration and fuel economy. The Golf's acceleration should be comparable, but as you can see, it trails on fuel economy (still not bad, though). The new Corolla ends up being better than the rest with its new 168-hp four-cylinder paired to novel transmissions: a six-speed manual with rev-matched downshifting (!) and a CVT that mimics the actions of a 10-speed automatic. The Corolla does weigh more than everything else, though, so that could hamper its acceleration. Fuel economy data also wasn't announced, but Toyota indicated it would be a bit better than the old Corolla iM. Something akin to the 2.0-liter Mazda 3's numbers seems likely. As for the Mazda, its top two trim levels actually come standard with its bigger engine. In any event, despite its ample power, testing has often showed that the Civic is still the quicker car from 0 to 60 mph. And finally, let's not leave out the two on the end. The Subaru is the only car in the segment that offers all-wheel drive (the Focus RS and Golf R don't count), but is also the segment weakling now that the Corolla iM has been discontinued.
Volkswagen may soon have remedy for more cheating diesels
Tue, May 10 2016Nearly a half-million motorists who own Volkswagens equipped with 2.0-liter engines have known for a few weeks the company might wind up buying back their vehicles as part of a settlement surrounding the company's emissions cheating. But about 85,000 drivers who own similarly afflicted diesels with 3.0-liter engines have been stuck without a remedy. They may not be waiting much longer. Bloomberg reports that Volkswagen will soon propose a fix for vehicles, including those from Audi and Porsche, equipped with 3.0-liter engines that will include new software and a new catalytic converter for the vehicles. Discussions with federal regulators are ongoing, according to the news outlet. "We are cooperating with the regulatory agencies and working with them on an approved solution," says Audi spokesperson Mark Clothier. "Beyond that, we cannot comment on ongoing investigations." Regulators have alleged that the company's 3.0-liter engines contain "defeat devices," illegal software that allows a vehicle to detect when it's undergoing an emissions test and turn off pollution control during real-world driving. The defeat device allows these vehicles to increase emissions of nitrogen oxide up to nine times the Environmental Protection Agency's allowable threshold. Affected 3.0-liter vehicles include the 2014 Volkswagen Toureg, 2015 Porsche Cayenne and the 2016 Audi A6 Quattro, A7 Quattro, A8, A8L and Q5. Volkswagen is slated to finalize its plans for buying back the afflicted 2.0-liter cars and potentially offer those motorists "substantial compensation" for their troubles by June 21, and it's possible that a formal announcement on the 3.0-liter vehicles would come at the same time.
