2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 Variant (Wagon) B5.5

- 164,702 KM (+ possibly 1 or 2km as the car has been moved around a few times since the photo)
- Blue exterior
- Black leather interior
- Climate Control
- Power Locks, Power Windows, Power heated mirrors
- Viper Valet remote start
- 2+ keys
- Sunroof
- HID's
- R-Line Grill (OEM Grill also included)
- Compact spare tire
- AM/FM/CD/Cassette/6 disc changer (Factory Monsoon with steering wheel controls)
- Cruise
- Heated Seats

Overall, the car is in decent condition but it does have some issues.

- Car is not driveable. Engine runs extremely rough. Possibly the timing chain skipped as is seems to be misfiring on the entire left bank. Codes include misfires, cam sensor, cam adjuster, torque converter.

- Shifter will not physically go into the lowest gear. Feels like the cable is stuck on something. However the car shifts into all gears fine when in Drive or by using the TipTronic shift.

The car was running fine and dandy. I stopped somewhere and turned the car off. When I returned it would barely start and did not have enough power to drive. Makes a lot of noise around the timing chain area. Mechanic is confident that no valves are bent at this point.

- Drivers door sensor is not functioning. This means that the car does not know when the drivers door is open. With this car, when you unlock it, it has a time delay where it expects to see a door open. If a door doesn't open in this time period it re-arms security. Since it can't tell if the drivers door is open, you have to put the key in the ignition within this time frame to prevent auto re-arming.

- Drivers heated seat not working properly. The control has 5 levels. On 5 (highest) the seat gets uncomfortably hot. On 4 its off. Thought to be the switch.

- Various scratches (See photos)
- one "flap" on the left dash vent doesn't operate

- New passenger tie rod end, alignment and 1 tire less than 3000 km ago. (all season tires)
- New R-Line grill. OEM grill included. (But not the W8 grill badge. I would like to keep it for sentimental reasons)
- Interior in good overall condition. Minor scuffs here and there.
- Homelink not broken!
- New K&N Air filter - Not even installed yet
- 3 new K&N oil filters
- New balance belt and tensioner - in box, not installed.
- Passenger HID intermittently won't stay lit. (The car has Daytime Running Lamps. When you turn on the key, the headlights ignite. At this point the passenger headlight always lights. Once you start/crank the engine, the headlights go out then reignite when the key is let go. Its at this time they headlight doesn't always come back on. Seems to be a common problem as you can read about it on forums. )
- Car has adhesive oil pan heater in place. Untested by me as I have not had the car through a winter.
- Has a "gorilla gear" cargo liner in good shape. Slight curling on some of the corners.
- Fuel pump controller in perfect condition. When I got the car I checked it out and it was dry. I bagged it and sealed it to prevent future problems.
- Remote starter transmitter battery is getting low. It intermittently doesn't send a signal. (There is only 1 remote for the starter)
- Everything else works fine. (Sunroof, radio, climate control, door locks, etc etc. )
- Note the fog light grill is out as that is where the tow hook is and we needed to winch it on the trailer. The OEM fog light grills are in bad shape. I have new aftermarket ones from ebay to be included.
- Right hand fog light has been modified to accept a Vision X Solstice Prime LED light. The intention was to do the other side as well. I would like to keep the light and as such there will be no RH foglight. Foglights can be found on eBay for about $35. Should you wish to keep the Vision X light, there will be an additional $175 payable above the auction price. You will also get the other Vision x Light for the left side, new in package. You can see the difference in the 10 watt LED versus the OEM 55 watt halogen. Bright!

Car is currently equipped with a cellular mount / amplifier and a dashcam. These items are not included.

I live about 60 miles North of International Falls, MN in Ontario Canada. Car is currently located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. For all intents and purposes, the pickup location will be Winnipeg. Winnipeg is a big centre and has rail and truck transportation for automobiles. Depending on your plans, you may need to budget ~$100 to have it towed to the carrier. It fits fine on a Uhaul Auto Transport.

Car can be seen and started with an appointment during normal business hours.

Awesome car. I just am not in a position to fix it and it will be missed dearly.

Car is as-is / where-is with no warranty and is currently not in a drivable condition. Short of the engine problem the car will pass Ontario and/or Manitoba safety inspections. Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Lights, Glass, etc  are all good.

Workers at Mississippi auto supplier protesting low wages

Tue, Feb 24 2015

Workers at an automotive seat factory in Mississippi are protesting what they say are low wages and poor working conditions as they attempt to unionize in what could become a new front for the United Auto Workers in the state. A group of workers and supporters at the Faurecia SA seating plant in Cleveland plans a Tuesday march. "We work an auto job and we're getting paid like Wal-Mart wages," said Jamarqus Reed, a 32-year-old Pace resident who has worked at the plant for almost 10 years. "We're trying to better ourselves." Nationally, the UAW has staked its future on unionizing Southern auto factories, with limited success so far. The union has been trying to organize Nissan Motor Co.'s Canton, MS, plant for years, and lost a 2008 worker vote at a Johnson Controls plant in nearby Madison that French-based Faurecia bought in 2011. The UAW narrowly lost a unionization vote at the Volkswagen AG plant in Chattanooga, TN, last year, but the union has since qualified for a new labor policy at the plant that grants access to meeting space and to regular discussions with management. The policy stops short of collective bargaining rights. The union is also trying to organize Nissan's assembly plant in Smyrna, TN, and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, AL. Protesters say Faurecia employees make a top wage of $11.64 per hour, while contract workers make $7.73 an hour. Company spokesman Tony Sapienza said that with overtime, the typical Faurecia employee makes more than the $27,000 a year that is the median wage around Cleveland. Wages are often low in the heavily impoverished Delta. "We are very confident that we are offering a very competitive wage," Sapienza said. Organizers criticize use of lower-paid contract workers Shannon Greenidge, a 44-year-old Cleveland resident, said she worked for a labor agency for more than two years before being hired directly by Faurecia. Greenidge said she makes $9.29 an hour, and can't save for retirement or to send her 11-year-old daughter to college. "That's not going to help me down the line in life," she said. Union supporters say as many as half the workers at the plant work for a contract-labor agency. Sapienza said that while the number varies, the company expects 15 percent of its workforce will be temporary employees this year. The UAW has organized some Southern auto parts plants in recent years, including Faurecia plants in Cottondale, Alabama, in 2012 and Louisville, Kentucky in 2013.

Take a listen to the Volkswagen ID 3 and Koenigsegg Jesko

Sun, Dec 15 2019

What could better demonstrate our diametric vehicular future than sound clips of the Volkswagen ID 3 and the Koenigsegg Jesko? Battery-electric vehicles don't make enough noise on their own, so VW partnered with composer Leslie Mandoki for the legally-mandated Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) that warns pedestrians and cyclists of the EV's presence. Mandoki — a German-Hungarian who once played drums in a Euro disco band called Dschinghis Khan — was asked to come up with a sound for the ID 3 that VW said "defines its identity," "radiates safety and the promise of effortless mobility," and that "must also impress with its unique character." The definition of the ID 3's single-motor, 201-horsepower character is this: Occupants and people around the hatch can hear the sound as the car accelerates to 18.6 mph, and when reversing. At higher speeds, the sound of wind resistance and tire noise takes over. As our library of AVAS tones grows, it's clear that EVs will provide a soundscape as varied as that of internal combustion engines. Here, for instance, is the industrial thrum used as the Karma Revero GT's pedestrian warning: And here is the sci-fi soaring from the BMW Vision M Next, as composed by Hans Zimmer: At the other end of the aural chamber, we have the Koenigsegg Jesko. In this case, the composer is a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 running on a bio-ethanol E85 blend that's almost suitable for IndyCar, powering the engine up to 1,600 horsepower. Output on pump gas will be 'only' 1,281 hp. The Swedish automaker released a clip of the exhaust note of a car in progress inside the Angelhom factory. Here's what we can look forward to: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. All these sounds have a place at the table, even if we'd prefer Karma booked some time with a producer and an Autotune session. To paraphrase Sesame Street, though, one of these sounds is definitely not like the other.

Subaru WRX vs. Volkswagen GTI | Under-$30K fun

Mon, Aug 7 2017

If financing a new car purchase for 60 months, you'll spend roughly $200/month for those five years on every $10K you finance. Subaru's WRX and Volkswagen's GTI, each with a base price of around $25K (which equates to roughly $400/month with 20 percent down) can easily become $40K (in WRX STI and Golf R trim). That extra $15,000 will cost you almost $300/month over the life of a 60-month payment book. A $40K Subaru or Volkswagen is cheap in terms of enjoying the additional performance, but if your goal is only to get places in a fast hatch or sedan, you can keep your outlay far closer to the base price. Just mind the options. VW GTI: In the increasingly popular hot hatch segment, the GTI was arguably the first. Based on the revolutionary (for the mid-'70s) Golf hatchback, the GTI offered upgraded power, improved handling and just enough cosmetic enhancements to let others know you were driving something special. Consumer response was immediate, and imitators came out of the woodwork. Now in its seventh iteration (as of the 2015 model year), the GTI has consistently evolved. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four makes 210 horsepower and — more important in day-to-day driving — 258 pound-feet of torque. Its footprint remains comfortably small, with easy access to front and rear seats and, if you need to carry something large, it has an expansive hatch and fold-down rear seat. Like most of the VW/Audi family, its interior design and appointment bat well above the $25,000 price point. Whether selecting the six-speed manual transmission or six-speed DSG automatic, know that a responsive, agile hatchback is just a throttle tip-in away. It's perfect for the in-town commute, weekend getaway or cross-country romp. And it appeals to a wide demographic, so resale value will remain high. Subaru WRX: This once was a performance derivative not shared with American consumers. But with its success globally, Subaru brought the WRX to the States, with the high-performance STI variant not long after. Having been offered in the U.S. as a sedan, wagon and hatchback, today's WRX is available only as a four-door sedan. As on every Subaru available in the U.S. (except the BRZ), all-wheel drive is standard. Power is supplied by a turbocharged flat four displacing 2.0 liters but upping the horsepower to 268, while available torque is numerically identical to the GTI's at 258 pound-feet.
