This is the perfect car for a Volkswagen enthusiast who wants to own a classic “sleeper.” The W8’s were only made for a few years, because the larger engine required a price point that competed too closely with Audi models. The interior was designed to keep up with the engine and has a luxurious feel.

From Edmunds.com:

"As the Passat's compact engine bay is unable to house a traditional V8, Volkswagen engineered a new W8. "W" refers to Volkswagen's new family of engines. The basic layout of the W8 is two narrow-angle four-valve V4 engines that share a common crankshaft and are configured at an angle of 72 degrees apart from each other. This layout could be described as a V-V arrangement, or a W. Displacing 4.0 liters and producing 270 ponies and 273 pound-feet of torque, the W8 is able to move the sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.”

“The only outwardly signs that there are eight cylinders under the hood are badging and dual exhausts neatly tucked on either side of the rear fender… Inside, you'll find the high-quality soft-touch materials that we always rave about… the W8 comes with leather trim, lovely wood accents, heated and power front seats, steering wheel-mounted stereo controls, automatic climate control, a sunroof, rain-sensing wipers and a tilt-down passenger-side mirror that facilitates parallel parking.”

Current condition:

The car accelerates and handles great. No known problems with the drive train or overall function of the vehicle. That said, the car is for sale as is and there are some minor repairs you may wish to undertake. The AC is currently not functional without repair. The headlights are angled low and could be adjusted. Exterior of the car is in great condition, with a few dings and minor paint scratches (see pictures of bumpers). One of the alloy wheels is missing the small cap that goes over the wheel bolts, and there are some scratches on the wheels. A small plastic piece came loose from the lower part of the grill on the passenger side (see picture). It is also missing the plastic belly pan, which came loose from underneath the car (mechanic felt it was cosmetic and replacement not necessary). The leather interior is in excellent condition with minor wear. The faux-wood plastic coating on the gear shifter partially came loose and could be replaced (see picture). The cargo cover does not retract properly.

History highlights:

I purchased the vehicle used from a dealership back in 2005. Back in 2009 I went ahead with a significant engine repair replacing the Cam Shaft Adjusters. Replaced the battery this January 2014.

Regarding payment:

I am happy to accept a cashier’s check in person at public place in Massachusetts at which time I will be happy to sign over the title and provide you with the car keys/vehicle.

VW boss confirms Subaru-aping Golf Alltrack for US

Fri, Nov 21 2014

Subaru needs to watch out, because the Japanese brand with a utilitarian image has a big bull's eye on its back. Not only is Acura considering going 100-percent all-wheel drive in a bid to mimic the successful automaker, Volkswagen has just confirmed that the Golf Alltrack is coming to the US as another competitor for Subaru's popular Outback crossover. Volkswagen Group of America CEO Michael Horn has confirmed the addition of the higher-riding, all-wheel drive version of the Golf SportWagen to Automotive News, indicating that the model will arrive in the US in 2016. "That's what our dealers, our customers, are asking us for," he said to the industry publication. The Golf Alltrack, which debuted at the Paris Motor Show in early October, has an extra 0.75 inches of ride height and protective black cladding all the way around. Its biggest mechanical differentiator from other Golfs is its Haldex all-wheel drive system, a setup that can completely unhook from the rear axle when not needed to save fuel. In Europe, the Alltrack is available with a turbocharged 1.8-liter with 178 horsepower and two diesels offering between 109hp and 182 hp. However, Horn made no mention of likely powertrains for the US. Horn tells Automotive News that all-wheel drive tooling is currently being installed at the Puebla, Mexico, factory where the standard Golf Sportwagen is built. VW might have tipped its hand about this possibility several months ago when press shots of the wagon were released for the US with TDI and 4Motion badges. Horn says he expects even the front-wheel drive version to be a sales hit here, suggesting it may eventually account for 50 percent of the Golf range's volume.

10 automakers sued over keyless ignitions

Thu, Aug 27 2015

Keyless ignition has rapidly proliferated throughout the auto industry to become a fairly normal feature on new cars. It's supposed to offer the convenience of keeping the fob in your pocket and just pressing a button to drive away. However, ten major automakers are now being sued in US District Court over claims that the system is dangerous, Reuters reports. The suit alleges that people are forgetting to shut off the engine, and the lack of an idle timer is the cause for 13 deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning and multiple injuries. The suit currently includes 28 plaintiffs, according to Reuters, but the lawyers are asking for class-action status to potentially add many more. The case goes after a major swath of the industry, including BMW, Daimler, FCA, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen, plus their related brands like Acura, Infiniti, Mini, and Lexus. In all, over five million vehicles are affected. The assertion here is that people walk away from their vehicle without shutting it off because they believe the engine shuts off automatically. If parked in a garage, carbon monoxide can build up, leading to poisoning. The lawyers claim automakers know this is a problem and also cite 27 complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the issue, according to Reuters. The plaintiffs are asking for an automatic shut-off and damages from the companies. These concerns have come up before, though. Toyota previously faced a lawsuit over a carbon monoxide death after a woman accidentally left her Lexus running. Also earlier this year, GM recalled 64,186 examples of the 2011-2013 Chevrolet Volt because owners weren't shutting them off. The problem resulted in two injuries, and the company released a software update to limit the idling time.

1000-hp Mk1 VW Golf is terrifyingly cool

Tue, 04 Jun 2013

There are plenty of things to love about the Mk1 Volkswgen Golf. The machine's horsepower isn't one of them. From the factory, the little hatch cranked a breathy 112 horsepower from the most robust form of its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Boba motoring, however, has taken that figure and multiplied it by a factor of nearly 10. If 1,000 horsepower sounds terrifying in a machine with a wheelbase of just 94.5 inches, it should. A massive Garrett GTX4202R turbo force-feeds the little mill through a tweaked 16-valve KR head. The crew calls the beast the 16Vampir, and we think that's fitting.
Of course, we'd wager you quit reading right about the time you set your eyes on that headline. Those of you who've stuck around this long can point yourselves below to see the maniacal creation in action. You won't be disappointed.
