Autoblog Minute: VW Q3 financial woes, 2015 Tokyo Motor Show

I'm senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. After a week away testing vehicles for Autoblog's Tech of the Year award, we're back in the office to recap the week in automotive news. [00:00:30] One of the things you might have missed was Consumer Reports pulling its recommendation of Tesla's Model S sedan. The blemish for Tesla comes after a tally of reviews from customer surveys. The most common problem areas for the Model S as cited by survey takers included: the drivetrain, power equipment, charging equipment, body and sunroof squeaks, rattles, and leaks. So lots of stuff. Though they could not ignore a score of "worse-than-average", Consumer Reports still [00:01:00] highlighted the fact that the Model S was "the best performing car" they've ever tested. Telsa CEO Elon Musk took to social media to defend his sedans saying: "Consumer Reports reliability survey includes a lot of early production cars. Already addressed in new cars." And, "Tesla gets top rating of any company in service. Most important, CR says 97% of owners expect their next car to be a Tesla (the acid test)." In Financial news, Volkswagen took a hit and reported an operating loss of [00:01:30] $3.84 billion. This is the first such loss for VW in 15 years. Toyota reclaimed the crown as the world's largest automaker as well. It's important that it's not all doom and gloom for VW though in Q3. Sales revenues were up and the company's automotive division boasts $30 billion dollars in liquid assets. It's a sizable war chest that will no doubt come in handy, as the company has yet to feel the full brunt of the diesel emissions scandal. Good news for gear heads. The US copyright office [00:02:00] ruled in favor of mechanics and car owners by granting an exception to existing copyright law. The law was originally meant to prevent software pirating and bootlegging of Hollywood movies.

Chrysler recalls 112k family-haulers over airbag controllers

The Basics: Chrysler has issued a recall for an array of minivans and crossovers manufactured in 2007 and 2008. The models affected include the 2009 Dodge Journey, 2008-09 Dodge Grand Caravan, and 2008-09 Chrysler Town and Country. The 2009 Volkswagen Routan, which was manufactured by Chrysler, is also being recalled by FCA. The automaker estimates that 112,001 units in the United States are affected, all told. The Problem: Corrosion in the air bag control unit could prevent the air bags from deploying in the event of a crash, or alternatively deploy prematurely. Chrysler points out that "none of the affected vehicles are equipped with ammonium-nitrate inflators" like those fitted by Takata. Injuries/Deaths: The manufacturer reports seven minor injuries (but no accidents) potentially related to this issue. The fix: Chrysler will replace the air bag control unit, though it has not yet outlined a timeframe for doing so. If you own one: Look for a recall notice in the mail and then schedule service with your local dealership. If you don't receive one, you can contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall number S07. In the affected vehicles, the air bag control units may corrode and fail. CONSEQUENCE: If the air bag control unit fails, the air bags may not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury. Additionally, the air bags may inadvertently deploy, increasing the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag control unit, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S07. VW diesel scandal: South Korea could be next

To no one's surprise, there are constant new developments in the VW diesel scandal. We hit the main points in a number of posts recently, but there were other, smaller developments that we didn't put into their own post. Instead, we've collected them here. For our complete coverage of this issue, click here. There's a lot to digest, so here goes. To try and keep dealers happy, VW announced that it guarantee bonus payments to its US dealers this month worth $300 for every new car sold ($600 for each Passat). The automaker is also going to guarantee payments from the company's customer experience bonus program. A memo from VW's US chief Michael Horn said, "We understand the pressure these recent events have put your business under and we are committed to providing you support," according to Automotive News. You can see Horn speaking at an event Monday night above. There will be at least one more official investigation into just how widespread this issue. South Korea has now said it will look into the emissions numbers for around 4,000-5,000 cars there. The affected TDI engines can be found in two VW and one Audi models (Jetta, Golf and A3) in South Korea. In the US, there could be another investigation as well, since Senator John Thune, (R-SD), the chairman of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, has asked the Federal Trade Commission to take a closer look. A scandal this big is not only going to affect VW. To get ahead of any possible criticism, Bosch has issued a statement saying that yes, it does make parts for the 2-liter, 4-cylinder TDI engine that is at the heart of the problem. But, in a statement emailed to Reuters, said, "We produce the components after specification of Volkswagen. The responsibility for application and integration of the components lies with Volkswagen." Looking ahead, VW said in a new statement (available below) that its new EU 6 diesel engines do, " comply with legal requirements and environmental standards." That means that, supposedly, there's no "defeat device" needed to make these engines clean enough to pass strict environmental regulations. That'll be important if VW wants to keep marketing diesel as a clean fuel. For now, the tide seems to be turning against the automaker. Volkswagen AG has issued the following information: Volkswagen is working at full speed to clarify irregularities concerning a particular software used in diesel engines.
