Here she is.
The Queen Ghia.
She is my lady in red, my daily driver. Soon she may be yours.
She is a stock 1972 Candy Apple Red VW Karmann Ghia who has been meticulously maintained over the years.
She starts right up, idles well, and will do 75 on the highway if you let her.
Shifts easily; clutch does not slip, engine is strong, AC is cold.
Or she will stay parked as passersby ogle her and stop to ask you questions.
It is impossible to stop at a light without someone rolling down the window and telling you how beautiful she is.
She just took 2nd place in the Regional Show and Shine VW show in Fort Lauderdale - no  easy feat considering how many Ghias were there!
But she is not a show car. She has the requisite dings and scratches that a daily driver has. The interior has been redone, but it is not flawless. The headliner is peeling in places. The vinyl has a few scuffs and scratches. I siliconed a portion of the left rear quarter window so the window would stay closed. I did this because the hinge is broken on that side ($20 part) and I did not want to risk losing the window panel. All the glass is original VW glass - very expensive to replace - and I did not want to risk losing that. That can be easily undone when it is time to replace that hinge. Or you could leave it as is.
She was repainted a few years ago and has held up well (see pictures).
This is probably one of the nicest, cleanest, well-maintained daily drivers you will ever come across. I think the photos speak for themselves. I have many more I would be happy to send you.
Nose cone has never been dented. That gorgeous curve is the same one as the day she left the factory.
Window seals have been replaced and are in good condition. Car does not leak even in the pouring rain.
There is minimal rust on this car - barely any. I don't believe ads that say rust free. How does a 40 or 50 year old car have no rust unless it was stored in a vacuum?
The undercarriage has been completely treated with a matte black rust preventative coating. It has done its job.
All pans and panels are solid, with no give.
Panasonic sound system with four speakers, two of them hidden behind the rear seat.
I have wired an accessory fuse block in the front trunk in case you want to add additional electronics.
I have wired interior LED lighting so you don't fumble for coins on the ground.
Tweed coco-mat panels in all the footwells. Clean, clean, clean...
Storage wells beneath the rear seat have been rubberized so things stay put in there.
I could give you a list of new this and new that, and upgraded this or that, but that' a waste of time.
Everything has been maintained by the book, and replaced when it needed to be replaced. I have kept most of the records and receipts.
Everything works.
Factory installed AC that functions perfectly and runs cold.
Heater vents and valves function perfectly (though it is a rare day I use them in Florida).
Just under 90K original miles, and ready to do 90K more easily.
Garage kept. Babied. Original 1972 Manual!
I have many more pictures on Flickr - I can send you the link if you would like.
Bottom line - this is a clean, well-maintained, relatively rust-free gorgeous classic car that has been cared for and driven regularly. It has not sat in a shed or a barn for decades.  That might sound good, but it's horrible for a car like this. VW's have to be used, driven, and cared for. Just like this one has. This is not a showroom car to look at behind glass. This is a car to drive, enjoy the compliments - let her take you back to a simpler time.

This is a reserve auction, with a very fair reserve price. I do reserve the right to and this auction early if the car sells locally.

Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla Model S full speed, Pheonix EVs at LAX

Fri, Jun 5 2015

A Tesla Model S driver shows what it's like to maintain about 125 miles per hour on the German Autobahn. In the video, Bjorn Nyland records his trip from a stop at a Supercharger 25 miles to the Danish border while driving about 200 kph for about 12 minutes. Upon entering the Autobahn, he hits the limiter at about 212 kph, or almost 132 mph. As he's driving, the car's estimated driving range adjusts for his speed, and he quickly loses quite a few miles. He doesn't care, though. He's having fun. See the video above, and read more at Inside EVs. Phoenix Cars has provided an Electric Shuttle Bus to an airport parking company at the Los Angeles International Airport. As LAX's first electric shuttle bus, it is expected to run two shifts seven days a week, saving more than 60 tons of CO2 emissions yearly. The electric shuttle bus will be on display from June 29 to July 2 at the International Parking Institute Conference and Expo in Las Vegas. Phoenix also recently supplied its ZEUS electric flatbed to the US Navy. Read more in the press release below. Ballard will operate a fleet of eight hydrogen-powered buses in London for an additional five years. Transport for London uses the buses, powered by Ballard fuel cell technology, for its central Covent Garden-Tower Gateway route. The first five buses went into service in 2010 as Transport for London aimed to reduce CO2 emissions by 60 percent from 1990 levels by 2025. The three additional buses joined the fleet in 2013. "This contract extension is a positive endorsement of zero-emission fuel cell technology in transit applications, based on the demonstrated performance of these buses over the past five years," says Ballard Chief Commercial Officer Steve Karaffa. "Clean transportation is a growing concern for transit authorities globally and our fuel cell modules deliver a proven solution." Read more from Ballard. Volkswagen and SAIC are expanding electric vehicle operations in China. The partners will expand the main Shanghai Volkswagen plant to build electric vehicles. "Over the next four years, we plan to localize more than 15 different electric vehicle models in China, including plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles," says Volkswagen's Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann. Volkswagen will also step up fuel cell and plug-in hybrid research in China. In about four years, Volkswagen will build a new EV, based on the popular Lavida, at the Anting plant outside of Shanghai. Volkswagen Golf, Ford F-150 named 2015 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year

Mon, Jan 12 2015

Congratulations, Volkswagen Golf/GTI and Ford F-150. You've just been named the 2015 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year, kicking off the first press day of the Detroit Auto Show. The Golf faced some seriously stiff competition from its runners-up, the Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis. But the Golf has been a highly awarded vehicle since its launch, including recently being named Motor Trend's Car of the Year. As for the Truck/Utility award, it wasn't immediately clear that the aluminum-bodied Ford F-150 would win the North American honor, topping the Chevrolet Colorado and Lincoln MKC. The Chevy, after all, has been widely praised since arriving this fall, including taking home MT's Truck of the Year award. In 2014, Chevrolet had a sweep of the NACTOY awards, with the Corvette Stingray and Silverado taking top honors. Here's a look at the 2015 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year voting breakdown. As you can see, it wasn't exactly neck and neck. Car of the Year Volkswagen Golf/GTI – 256 points Ford Mustang – 204 points Hyundai Genesis – 110 points Truck/Utility of the Year Ford F-150 – 297 points Chevrolet Colorado – 205 points Lincoln MKC – 68 points The winners were determined by the votes of 57 North American jurors who work in all forms of media – magazine, newspaper, television, online and radio, and their ballots were tabulated in secret by accounting firm Deloitte & Touche. Autoblog editors Sharon Carty and Chris Paukert are members of the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year jury. Brand new cars are being sold with defective Takata airbags

Wed, Jun 1 2016

If you just bought a 2016 Audi TT, 2017 Audi R8, 2016–17 Mitsubishi i-MiEV, or 2016 Volkswagen CC, we have some unsettling news for you. A report provided to a US Senate committee that oversees the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and reported on by Automotive News claims these vehicles were sold with defective Takata airbags. And it gets worse. Toyota and FCA are called out in the report for continuing to build vehicles that will need to be recalled down the line for the same issue. That's not all. The report also states that of the airbags that have been replaced already in the Takata recall campaign, 2.1 million will need to eventually be replaced again. They don't have the drying agent that prevents the degradation of the ammonium nitrate, which can lead to explosions that can destroy the airbag housing and propel metal fragments at occupants. So these airbags are out there already. We're not done yet. There's also a stockpile of about 580,000 airbags waiting to be installed in cars coming in to have their defective airbags replaced. These 580k airbags also don't have the drying agent. They'll need to be replaced down the road, too. A new vehicle with a defective Takata airbag should be safe to drive, but that margin of safety decreases with time. If all this has you spinning around in a frustrated, agitated mess, there's a silver lining that is better than it sounds. So take a breath, run your fingers through your hair, and read on. Our best evidence right now demonstrates that defective Takata airbags – those without the drying agent that prevents humidity from degrading the ammonium nitrate propellant – aren't dangerous yet. It takes a long period of time combined with high humidity for them to reach the point where they can rupture their housing and cause serious injury. It's a matter of years, not days. So a new vehicle with a defective Takata airbag should be safe to drive, but that margin of safety decreases with time – and six years seems to be about as early as the degradation happens in the worst possible scenario. All this is small comfort for the millions of people who just realized their brand-new car has a time bomb installed in the wheel or dashboard, or the owners who waited patiently to have their airbags replaced only to discover that the new airbag is probably defective in the same way (although newer and safer!) as the old one.
