1964 Karmann Ghia Convertible

Up for auction is one of the best examples of a Karmann Ghia on the market today!  This car is a jaw dropper!  There are not many Ghias out there that are restored to the level that this car is.   If you ever thought about investing your money in a Karmann Ghia, this one is as safe as an investment as they get.  Demand for these cars is steadily growing, and one of this caliber is sure to appreciate in value.

This car still retains its originality and integrity, but has alot of mechanical upgrades and modern convenience that make it a joy to drive.  It has a very vintage look and feel, yet drives are performs safely and comfortably.

This fantastic 64 convertible belongs to some good friends of mine.  I am listing the car for them, so any questions should be directed to Bryan, at 314-422-5098.  I don't normally list cars for other people or cars that I do not own, but I  have been around this car since it was purchased and through its entire restoration.  I am familiar with the car enough that I feel comfortable listing it.

It took years to find the right car to start with.  Its hard to find an early Ghia convertible that hasn't been hit, molested, or have rust. This car started as an extremely nice, rust free, original, un-hit, survivor that was garaged its entire life.  When you start with a good car, they are that much better in the end.  This car was better than most any out there before the restoration.

This car was completely disassembled and done right!  No corners were cut during this build.  This was a 3 year restoration with no expense spared.  Countless hours and a lots of money spent getting this car to where you see it today.

The paint and body were professionally done by a restoration expert and look incredible.  The car was done using all Dupount material.  It has been color sanded and buffed to a mirror finish.  The car was completely stripped and repainted, including the jambs, engine compartment, trunk, etc. All the gaps and body lines look great.  The doors open and close very nice.  The windows go up and down and line up as they should.  The fit and finish on the car is very nice.   As stated before, this was a rust free car to start with so no rust repair was needed.  All German metal!!! Just look at the pics of the nose and spare tire area.  Never hit and never any rust!

All the bright work on the car has been restored and shines beautifully.  The original bumpers were dissembled and re-plated.  The mirrors, door handles, emblems, ect... have all been either replaced or re-plated.  The aluminum parts were straightened and re-polished.

This car doesn't just look gorgeous, it performs too!  It was built with function and practicality in mind. This car can be driven anywhere.  All the kinks have been worked out and it is ready to be enjoyed.  It starts, runs, drives, and stops just as it should.  It needs nothing and is ready to bump the key and go.  It has been upgraded to 12 volt, which allows for the modern stereo with Ipod hookup, phone charger, ect.

The motor is a professionally built 1641 that runs great.  Everything is new and was done by a VW expert.  The motor retains a stock look and appearance, but has a lot more power and drive-ability.  Most of the parts on the motor such as the fan shroud, cylinder tins, air cleaner, etc were stripped and repainted.  This is a very smooth running motor with plenty of power to cruise highway speeds.

The interior on the Ghia is also all new.  The seats and door panels were refinished in a correct style tan vinyl.  New German square weave carpet was added.  The steering wheel and horn ring are new.  All the trim inside the car was re-polished or replaced.  The knobs and switched are new.  The top is a new stay-fast canvas and operate as it should.  Everything on the car works; speedometer, fuel gauge, horn, wipers, turn signals, headlights, taillights, dash lights, ect.

The car has a rare and valuable AM/FM Sapphire radio, that works!  There is also a secondary stereo system that is hidden in the car that plays off your phone or Ipod.  There are 4 speakers and an amplifier.  It sounds nice and is plenty loud enough to here even on the highway with the top down.  A cigarette lighter was added in the glove box to so you can charge your phone on a weekend road trip.

The smoothie wheels were refinished and painted to match the car.  A new set of Coker wide whitewall tires were added along with a new set of chrome caps.  Even the spare was painted to match.

This car was taken to a large national VW event with cars from all over the country, and didn't just win its class, it took Best of Show!  It draws a crowd wherever it goes.  If you don't like attention, this isn't the car for you.

Overall, this investment grade Ghia is sure to make its new owner proud!  This is a car that you can drive, use, and enjoy as it appreciates in value.  All the work is done and Its ready for its new owner.  You could not duplicate this car for what it can be purchased for.  There has been no expense spared on this one.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE 'marks beginning of a new design era' [w/video]

Mon, Mar 2 2015

You didn't think that Volkswagen was going to come to Geneva armed only with a bunch of European-market minivans and wagons, did you? Of course not. Last week VW gave us our first glimpse at a new show car for the Swiss auto expo, and here it is in full: the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE. Set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this week, the Sport Coupe is envisioned as a successor to the current CC, but beyond previewing a specific model, this concept showcases a new design language that's set to characterize all new VWs to come. And judging by how good it looks from the images in the slideshow above, that could prove to be a very good thing indeed. The concept strikes us as the sleekest iteration yet of the company's flexible MQB architecture that already underpins vehicles as small as the Golf and as large as the new Skoda Superb. It's larger than the current CC in every dimension but height, and pushes the wheels further out on a longer wheelbase. And with a liftgate at the back instead of a trunk, it strikes a form more similar to the Audi A7 than the Passat-based CC. As with recent past concepts, VW has taken the opportunity to showcase its hybrid powertrain technologies, fitting the Sport Coupe with a plug-in hybrid system that couples a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 to a pair of electric motors and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The internal combustion engine drives 295 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels, while an electric motor integrated into the gearbox contributes another 54 hp and a second one kicks in 114 hp at the rear. Juiced by a lithium-ion battery housed in the center tunnel and offering all-wheel traction, the combined output of 374 hp is said to be capable of propelling the concept to 62 miles per hour in five seconds flat and on to a top speed of 155 mph. It can travel for 32 miles on electric power alone and on to an overall range of 745 miles, netting the equivalent of 118 miles per gallon on the European cycle. Inside, the four-seat cabin is laden with digital displays: there's a 12.3-inch unit – dominated by the speedo and power meter – in place of a conventional instrument cluster. The center stack incorporates a 10.1-inch infotainment display, and the rear-seat passengers have access to another 12.3-inch display at the back of the center console and another pair of 10.1-inch displays in the seatbacks.

VW investigating Golf water leak discovered by car magazine

Sat, 07 Sep 2013

Volkswagen is in a spat with German magazine Auto Bild over claims that its new, seventh-generation Golf may already need a recall. The German weekly reports that new Golfs can leak water into front-passenger footwells due to a faulty drainage tube in their air conditioning systems.
And while the fix itself doesn't sound too terrible, because Volkswagen bases so many cars off the same platform as the Golf, Auto Bild is claiming that 300,000 models could be affected, including the Audi A3 and Seat Leon. That's a very bold claim. For its part, VW is vehemently denying that number, according to Reuters, saying it's aware of the problem and claiming only 46 Golfs need fixing. In addition, it denies that any Audi or Seat models are affected by the issue.
Either way, regardless of how pervasive this leak issue is, North American buyers should rest easy knowing that the problems ought to get fixed by the time the Mk VII Golf finaly reaches our dealerships.
