Hi, We are selling our Jetta Wagon after purchasing a new TDI SportWagon. The Volkswagon (it's not a car, it's a Volkswagon!) was purchased new in '03 and has been well maintained, both by the dealer and a local shop specializing in Audi/Porche/VW, and garaged. We really like this car and have put off selling it as it solid and fun to drive. It has 96K, mostly highway, miles The Wagons (unlike the sedans) are made in Germany and are very well put together with no rattles or squeaks even after 10 years on the road.
It is not a (seemingly much sought-after) TDI model. You may think you need a TDI. As the owner of one, here is my take: Many people cite the large amount of torque that a diesel has- unless you are going to tow a trailer, the long stroke 2.0L gas engine has PLENTY of torque. Diesel engines are more fuel efficient (my TDI gets an average of 36 while the '03 gets 27) but diesel fuel now costs considerably more than gas, severely limiting that advantage AND the do pollute more. Finally, longevity- The 2.0L engine is based on a block that VW has been using for years and if properly maintained (as this VW has been) will probably go for a couple hundred thousand miles before need an overhaul. |

VW looking to MAN up, ditch Mercedes van deal
Wed, 16 Jan 2013Unlike the US, the commercial truck market throughout the rest of the world is chocked full of competitors from many different automakers. Since 2006, Volkswagen has had a fullsize van called the Crafter that was a result of a partnership with Daimler AG and based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This partnership is supposed to last through 2016, but Reuters is reporting that VW might be looking to end its relationship with Daimler and create its own van in cooperation with German truck and bus maker MAN.
The article says that VW AG has more than a 75-percent stake in MAN, which would essentially be keeping the new commercial vehicle in-house. Even if VW bolts, Daimler still has a deal worked out in the commercial truck industry between its subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso and Renault-Nissan to supply the other with different trucks.
Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva
Thu, 21 Feb 2013After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.
VW teases GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo concept
Sun, Apr 12 2015Volkswagen was among the first to demonstrate its Vision for Gran Turismo with the GTI Roadster concept, last year. And now it's gearing up to release another one. Previewed in the video clip above and the images in the gallery below, the new GTI Supersport is once again conceptually based on the German automaker's iconic hot hatch. But instead of a roofless design rendered in red, this one has a fixed roof with pseudo NACA ducts and white bodywork, along with twin nostril air extractors in the hood, a giant carbon-fiber rear wing and diffuser, and large side vents. In short, it looks like it'll be awesome, and we'll likely see the full thing before too long – so watch this space.
