Winterkorn not under official investigation in Germany
Thu, Oct 1 2015Prosecutors for the state of Lower Saxony in Braunschweig, Germany, are now saying that former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn is no longer specifically under investigation for his role in alleged fraud related to the automaker's diesel emissions scandal. The lawyers are clarifying that there's no formal inquiry into the exec because there's not yet enough evidence to establish a suspicion of wrongdoing, Bloomberg reports. However, they are still looking into VW's actions. Earlier this week, the prosecutors announced they had begun an initial investigation into Winterkorn for alleged fraud in the emissions regulation evasion. At that time, there were reportedly 12 complaints asking the lawyers to look into the case, including one from VW. Under German law, only a person could be charged for the potential crimes, rather than a whole company. "An initial suspicion must be based on facts, and you must begin an investigation before you can establish the facts," Christoph Schalast, a professor at the Frankfurt School of Finance, said to Bloomberg. Meanwhile in the US, the investigation continues into VW. The Department of Justice has the support from at least two senators to pursue criminal and civil charges against the company. The attorneys general in at least 29 states are also looking into things. Meanwhile, lawyers are building a class-action lawsuit, as well. To help in its defense, the automaker is employing the help of the same firm that defended BP during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Related Video:
Peugeot will prove it doesn't offer cheater diesels
Thu, Oct 29 2015Our diesels are clean, really. That's the message from French automaker PSA/Peugeot-Citroen as it plans to go on the offensive in response to Volkswagen's diesel-emissions scandal. PSA will go out of its way to prove its diesels are as clean as advertised. The company is looking at disclosing "real-world" fuel-economy statistics as soon as next spring and will use an independent entity to vet the numbers, Automotive News Europe says, citing comments that PSA/Peugeot-Citroen financial chief Jean-Baptiste de Chatillon made to reporters this week. Such efforts may be vital, since roughly two-thirds of the vehicles Peugeot-Citroen sells in Europe are powered by a diesel engine. Last month, VW admitted that as many as 11 million of its diesel-powered vehicles were programmed with software designed to cheat emissions-testing systems. The news shook up the industry, especially companies that sell a good chunk of diesels. The EU itself may start instituting "real world" fuel-economy and emissions testing as soon as 2017. French regulators have said they may eliminate diesel-fuel subsidies that currently make diesel fuel cheaper to customers than gas. That adjustment may occur as soon as next year, since it's been pushed up in response to the VW scandal. Peugeot-Citron continues to reiterate that it has never installed software that was designed to cheat emissions-testing systems. Additionally, the automaker was more than a decade ahead of European Union mandates for engine components designed to cut soot emissions, so the company is hoping its track record makes a difference. It wants to be perfectly clear about that. Meet ZelectricBug, the amazing '63 VW Bug converted to EV power
Thu, Feb 27 2014No word a lie, we here at AutoblogGreen are fans of classic cars. What we are not fond of, however, is the pollution that their inefficient engines create, and so it's great to see our old favorites lovingly up-cycled with electric drivetrains. The ZelectricBug is a beautiful example of how new, cleaner life can be breathed into an old Volkswagen Beetle. Now, we first came across this particular automobile during the Refuel event last summer and we were struck by its cleanly done conversion then. Aside from a few snaps in our gallery, though, we didn't give it the kind of attention it deserves. Fortunately, the good folks over at Roads and Rides have rectified this by turning their pro video camera skills onto the 1963 V-Dub and producing a nice little segment to accompany their write up. Scroll below to see the finished footage and head over to their website for some stills. If all this gives you a hankering for your own Zelectric, the company does have plans to sell to the public starting this summer. If you don't want to wait, EV West, the guys who did the drivetrain work on this car, have conversion kits available for Beetles, as well as a number of other vehicles.
