Volkswagen Golf GTD Variant burns the oil long and fast
Wed, Mar 4 2015Volkswagen offers no shortage of variations on the Golf theme in America, from the base hatchback and the electric e-Golf to the sporty GTI and performance-oriented Golf R. But as many as are available Stateside, there are even more that never make it here. Like the one you see above. It's called the Volkswagen Golf GTD Variant. It's based on what we'd know as the new Golf SportWagen, which is just arriving in the US now, but this one packs the performance upgrades from the Golf GTD. Isn't that a typo? Don't we mean GTI? No, we don't: we mean GTD. Because in Europe, you can get what is essentially a GTI with a diesel, complete with all (or at least most) of the gear you'd find in the petrol hot hatch, only with a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline-four packing 181 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. That may not sound like all that much as far as performance models go, but it's more than we'll be able to get from either the gasoline or diesel versions of the Golf SportWagen back in the States. And that makes us a little jealous, especially with room for the kids, the dog and all their gear in the back. World premiere of the new Golf GTD Variant - The perfect all-round package: sporty, economical, comfortable and spacious - Launch set for Geneva Motor Show Since 1982 Volkswagen's GTD logo has stood for Gran Turismo Diesel, with its promise of sporty yet economical motoring. Now for the first time, the GTD initials grace the Golf Variant, which like the Golf GTD, boasts the 184 PS (135 kW) TDI engine. The new Golf GTD Variant is set for its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, and is available to order as of now at a price of 31,975 euros. The Golf GTD Variant* is excellently placed to establish itself as an iconic long-distance cruiser. The 184 PS TDI engine takes the Golf GTD Variant to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds with the 2-litre unit delivering a maximum torque of 380 Nm – and yet this sporty Variant car boasts impressive fuel consumption figures of only 4.4 litres per 100 km. The car's sporty character is reflected in its exterior design: along with special GTD bumpers and the honeycomb radiator grille, the Golf GTD Variant also features smoked rear lights and flared sills. The look is completed by 17-inch Curitiba alloys, black roof rails and dual chrome tailpipes.
Volkswagen Golf voted 2013 European Car of the Year
Tue, 05 Mar 2013The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf just went on sale in Europe, but it is already off to a promising start. Announced as the Geneva Motor Show kicked off, the newest Golf was named European Car of the Year for 2013 in dominating style over cars like the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 twins, Volvo V40, Ford B-Max and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
According to Automotive News Europe, the MkVII Golf won handily over its rivals with a total of 414 votes. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86 received 202 votes finishing in a distant second, while the Volvo V40 (189 votes), Ford B-Max (148 votes) and Mercedes-Benz A-Class (138 votes) round out the top five. The new Golf marks the third Volkswagen product to receive the prestigious award with previous cars including the MkIII Golf and the most recent iteration of the Polo.
For emissions control suppliers, VW diesel scandal is good news
Wed, Oct 21 2015In the "making Lemonade out of lemons" department, European makers of emissions control and catalytic systems are seeing their stock prices rise in the wake of Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal, Reuters says. Investment bankers and money managers are touting companies such as Johnson Matthey, Faurecia, Umicore and ElringKlinger. Shares of some of those companies jumped more than 25 percent since the scandal broke last month. Despite the scandal, demand for diesel-powered vehicles is expected to continue in Europe because of the powertrain's superior fuel economy. Additionally, a new version of nitrogen-oxide testing is slated to start in 2016, while prices for platinum, which is required for catalytic systems, have dropped. All of this put together is helping to make the emissions control companies more valuable. However much they may benefit, though, VW and other diesel-vehicle makers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW may continue to suffer. That's because governments around the world are calling for heightened diesel-emissions testing procedures that better simulate real-world driving conditions. And according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), that alone could cause costs associated with making diesel vehicles to spike and negate the fuel-economy advantages that drive demand in the first place. Regulators in VW's home country of Germany have demanded a recall of 2.4 million vehicles whose software has been programmed to under report emissions level. Such "cheating" software has been installed in as many as 11 million vehicles worldwide. VW, whose CEO resigned last month because of the scandal, has set aside $7.3 billion to address the issue.
