Unfortunately, I have to say goodbye to my beloved 1982 Volkswagen Diesel Vanagon Westfalia camper. I'm returning to grad school and need a city driver instead. But my loss can be your gain! When I bought her in Florida a year and half ago, I became the third owner. Since then, I've driven from coast to coast. Along the way I've put a lot of work into it, both professionally and personally.

The engine is the original 1.6L Diesel with 48 horsepower, which runs well and as intended. It could easily and inexpensively be set-up for a biodiesel conversion. It could also easily be converted to a turbo with one of the plentiful VW 1.9L engines that would drop right into place. Currently the vehicle averages 25 mpg and tops out at 60-65 mph. In my experience, by avoiding the interstate, one can ride comfortably, affordably, and travel through country that is seldom seen. On your weekend get-a-way, the journey becomes a part of the destination.

One of the photos (easier to appreciate in person) details all the work I had done by a vintage Volkswagen specialist in Phoenix. Here is a semi-complete list of repairs/replacements since I acquired the van:

Radiator, Starter, Alternator, Battery, Muffler, Timing Belt, Water Pump, Glow Plugs, Belts, Relays, Thermostat, Shocks, Clutch Slave Cylinder, Wheel Cylinder, Heater Blower, Poptop Seal, LED Dash Lights, Speaker, 12V Charger, Shift Bushings, Lines/Hoses.

Considering its age, I think the van is in very good shape. I focused primarily on mechanical issues in my repairs, and the van runs well today as a result.

There are a few cosmetic issues that remain. There are small superficial spots of rust scattered over the body. In the center of the front bumper is the only significant rust that goes through (pictured). Never could understand why that one spot was so vulnerable. One portion of a cabinet was cut out by a previous owner. It's missing one of the L-bars for one of the tables, and a cover that connects the heater to the floor vents (pictured). The front top grille needs to be replaced. The canvas for the pop-top has a couple of small tears. The original top bed has been replaced with a cushion set-up that works nicely. I believe those are all of the flaws. Overall, she's a beaut. Even has the ice cube trays and working original radio/tape player! The mileage is approximate because it's a replacement odometer. But the previous owner had the decency to write the mileage from the original on the back of the current (both pictured).

Included with your purchase is the Bentley Repair Manual and an assortment of original manuals (pictured). In an attempt to be as transparent as possible, I've included the CARFAX report. The mood at this year’s Paris Motor Show: Quiet

Tue, Oct 2 2018

The Paris Motor Show, held every other year in the early fall, typically kicks off the annual cavalcade of automotive conclaves, one that traverses the globe between autumn and spring, introducing projective, conceptual and production-ready vehicle models to the international automotive press, automotive aficionados and a public hungry for news of our increasingly futuristic mobility enterprise. But this year, at the press preview days for the show, the grounds of the Porte de Versailles convention center felt a bit more sparsely populated than usual. This was not simply a subjective sensation, or one influenced by the center's atypically dispersed assemblage of seven discrete buildings, which tends to spread out the cars and the crowds. There were not only fewer new vehicles being premiered in Paris this year, there were fewer manufacturers there to display them. Major mainstream European OEM stalwarts such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Nissan and Volkswagen chose to sit out Paris this year, as did boutique manufacturers like Bentley, Aston Martin and Lamborghini. This is not simply based in some antipathy on the part of the German, British and Italian manufacturers toward the French market — though for a variety of historical and societal reasons that market may be more dominated by vehicles produced domestically than others. Rather, it is part of a larger trend in the industry. Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would not be participating in the flagship North American International Auto Show in 2019 — and that it might not return. Other brands including Jaguar/Land Rover, Audi, Porsche, Mazda and nearly every exotic carmaker have also departed the Detroit show. Some of these brands will still appear in the city in which the show is taking place, and host an event offsite, to capitalize on the presence of a large number of reporters in attendance. And even brands that do have a presence at the show have shifted their vehicle introductions to the days before the official press opening in an attempt to stand out from the crowd. In many ways, this makes sense. With an expanding number of automakers, with diversification and niche-ification of models and with wholesale shifts that necessitate the introduction of EV or autonomous sub-brands, there is a growing sense that, with everyone shouting at the same time, no one can be heard.

Volkswagen could build plug-in hybrids in China

Sun, Apr 6 2014

When you're Europe's largest automaker and your largest global market happens to be the one most notorious for its pollution (China), some solutions just present themselves. Volkswagen may be heeding that call. During the upcoming Beijing Motor Show, the company is expected to announce plans to produce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in China, Reuters says, citing sources within the company. Few details have emerged, though the plug-ins will likely be produced at VW's Foshan factory in South China, which currently makes the Golf and Audi A3 and has plans to eventually make 600,000 vehicles annually. News has been percolating for a while, as Oliver Schmidt, general manager engineering and environmental office for Volkswagen Group of America, said last March that the company was planning at least two plug-in hybrid lines under the VW badge (and another three with its Audi and Porsche affiliates), including possibly a Touareg and Jetta PHEV. VW said late last month that it was looking to speed up development of "particularly eco-friendly models" made by Shanghai Volkswagen as well as developing a "new, very eco-friendly vehicle" with First Automotive Works (FAW). Earlier this year, VW unveiled its Golf GTE plug-in hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show. That model has a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to provide 201 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The car can travel as many as 81 miles on electric power alone.

Recharge Wrap-up: Arcimoto SRK video, BAIC EV at CES

Tue, Jan 12 2016

Kelley Blue Book took a spin in the Arcimoto SRK three-wheeled EV at CES in Las Vegas. In the video above, KBB Managing Editor Micah Muzio gets behind the handlebars for a spin around an empty parking lot. He notes a gradual throttle tip-in, though from the video, it appears the trike has a bit of pep. While the hydraulic brake pedal requires a bit of extra effort, the regenerative brake lever located on the right handlebar is effective and easy to use. The steering is a little heavy, but manageable, at low speeds. He calls it "kind of a fun little conveyance," adding, "Maybe this is the future." See the full review in the video above. CARB Chairman Mary Nichols spoke with German television about Volkswagen's emissions scandal. In a photo she posted on Twitter, Nichols can be seen in front of cameras with CARB's test bay in the background. In the bay is a Volkswagen Jetta TDI. She says in her tweet, "Discussing VW cheating case w/German TV in front of ARB lab test bay & '07 diesel Jetta. Time to move on to #EVs!" Late last year, a group of environmentalists and Silicon Valley leaders – Elon Musk included – sent Nichols an open letter suggesting CARB help urge Volkswagen to give up on diesels and focus on electric vehicles. See Nichols's post on Twitter. South Korea's most popular EV is the Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) SM3 ZE (also known as the Renault Fluence ZE). The all-electric vehicle has sold 1,767 units since its arrival in Korea since November 2013, with 2015 sales reaching 1,043 units. This makes one in three EVs in Korea a RSM SM3 ZE. The car has been selected as Korea's official government vehicle, and RSM has supplied over 100 EV taxis, 60 of which are in Seoul. Read more in the press release from Renault. BAIC EV announced it has established an R&D center in Detroit at CES. It will work with its other centers in Silicon Valley and Aachen, Germany in order to develop automotive technology and evaluate global demand. The EV branch of the Chinese automaker also debuted its i-Link information system, which uses 4G to connect car telematics to the cloud. The i-Link system also provides wireless phone charging, remote inquiry services and connects sensing technologies to the internet. Read more in the press release below.
