1971 Vw Bus, Type 2 Transporter, Seats 9! Cherry Picked, Rare Find, Restored! on 2040-cars
Eastsound, Washington, United States
1971 VW TRANSPORTER BUS --H4 1.6 Liter 1584 CC 97 CID-- ALREADY LOOKS GREAT BUT WOULD LOOK AMAZING WITH EVEN MORE RESTORATION I purchased this classic in Seattle via private sale and it has lived in my WA garage since then. Previous to that it had 2 owners, both in Seattle and was always garaged. Because of this, there is minimal rust on the bus:) A local auto restorer told me it was the most rust free bus he'd seen in a long time! I purchased this in November and had hoped to keep it in my private collection for a long time, but my need for money for my new business has forced me to sell. It runs great and I am extremely sad to be selling! It passed the pre-buyers inspection I paid for wonderfully. I never buy a vehicle without one. It was recommended that I do a tune up which I just had done (6/25/14). It has been a reliable street and country-road vehicle for me in the last 8 months, a drove it on the freeway from Seattle home and it did great on the freeway as well. A previous owner had the bus professionally repainted, and it looks wonderful. There are a few areas of bondo on the side panels (please see photos) and your random nicks here and there but overall, it is a head turner wherever it goes! It has the original seats and all 9 original seat belts. One seatbelt needs to be bolted in still. The odometer reads 89,326 miles AS OF 6/23/2014. I am still driving this, so there may be more at time of pickup. Has collectors plates, so no tabs ever needed once transferred to new owners name! The interior has decent seats, there are tears in all three but still comfy with the exception of the front seat, which in my opinion would be great to replace. The heater works as far as I can tell, but don't get too excited, it does not heat you like a new car, lol. The passenger side mirror is missing and will need to be purchased. The right rear brake light is cracked, but still intact. It has 4 speeds and reverse, all working. A few easy to read bullet points- -Engine = H4 1.6 Liter 1584 CC 97 CID -Transmission = manual 4 speed -Purchased in WASHINGTON NOVEMBER 2013 --garaged ever since! -ONE OF THE MOST RUST FREE RIGS YOU WILL FIND!!!! -Odometer: Original MILES!!!! 89,326- SUPER LOW!!! -In good running condition at purchase; even better now after the tune up!! Truck is currently a reliable starter and runner. -Beautiful lines! -Recent new paint job with some blemishes (see pics). Mainly, the paint looks great, but there are a few areas where the paint could use some touch up (if you are picky). There are a few slight little dings here and there (nothing super noticeable), and a few areas where the paint has bubbled up a bit over the bondo areas. Overall, it looks great but it not perfect and should not be considered as such. -Passenger side (right) mirror is missing and needs to be replaced. -All doors lock! Key included. -All lights and windshield wipers all work. -Stereo is installed but not in working condition. -Interior light works. -Brakes are at 8mm and 6mm and in good working order. -Tires have good tread left. MOST EXCITING IS ALL THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE TO THE BUS IN THE LAST 10k miles! 1. 74, 835 miles: $287.78 -replaced engine compartment fuel hoses -cleaned/filed/st point gap/ -set basic timing -replaced alternator belt -changed oil, cleaned strainer filter -bleed brake system checked transmission fluid 2. 74,949 miles: $703.41 -replaced brake master cylinder -left rear wheel cylinder -bleed system -replaced turn signal relay -replaced broken connectors on fuse block -repaired horn button connection -replaced lights 3. 74,967 miles: $330.06 TIRES! (55,000 mile warranty, good till 124k+miles) 4. 79,170 miles: $765.61 BRAKES! -resealed oil strainer housing and drain plug -ignition timing off, reset timing and idle speed -serviced front brakes, replaced calipers, pads and rotors. -lubed caliper sides -repacked wheel bearings -bleed system -adjust rear brakes 5. 81,795 miles: $299.24 -replaced both relays and covered fuse/relay box -replaced right real wheel cylinder -oil change 6. 83,159 miles: $1,872.45 -rebuilt manual transmission -replaced clutch and shifting coupler -tightened fan belt 7. 85,000 miles: $1084.00 PAINT JOB! Done by Maaco Lower tone red, upper tone white 8. 89,326 miles: $ COMPLETE TUNE UP!! VW air rule violation allegations 'stunning,' $18B fine unlikely
Sat, Sep 19 2015The big automotive news today was the US federal allegations that VW quietly and illegally installed software on approximately 482,000 diesel vehicles sold in the United States so that they would not return substandard results on government emissions tests. To say the least, this is potentially a very big deal. You can read the details of the government's allegations here. The problem seems to be with the NOx trap. Sam Abuelsamid, a former AutoblogGreen editor who is now a senior research analyst at Navigant Research's Transportation Efficiencies program, told me that there were some hints that VW's diesel emissions strategy had issues a while back. The vehicles affected by today's announcement are all equipped with the 2-liter, 4-cylinder TDI, he said. They all have the lean NOx (nitrogen oxides) trap, whereas all other current modern diesels use urea to treat NOx emissions. "When VW launched those vehicles, I went to the TDI launch program in Santa Monica and asked them if they were going to put the diesel engine into the Tiguan because that would be an ideal application," he said. "They said no, because it would be too heavy. Turns out, the NOx trap was enough to meet the emissions standards in the smaller cars, but not the Tiguan. That seems to be where the problem is, in the NOx trap. All the other big VW and Audi diesels, they use urea, just like BMW and Mercedes do." Abuelsamid added that, in California, to do an emissions test, testers don't stick a probe up the exhaust, as you would suspect. Instead, they just do a visual test to make sure nothing was tampered with and then plug a scanner into the OBD-II port to read the codes. The news today basically says that the cars were programmed to send out false codes, giving readings that testers are looking for instead of what's actually going on. "That's the background, as far as I know at this point," he said. This could be "a black eye on the auto industry." - John O'Dell Speaking at the AltCar Expo in Santa Monica just hours after the news first broke this morning, Edmunds.com's John O'Dell said the Fed's allegations were "stunning." The idea that VW might have gamed the system, he said, "underscores how important EPA clean air numbers are, that a company would allegedly stoop to this to try and meet them. Obviously, people are paying attention to that sort of thing.

VW recalling 38k Jettas, Passats, Golfs and Beetles for fuel leak
Wed, Dec 31 2014Earlier we reported on a recall issued for the 2015 VW Jetta regarding a problem with the headlights, and now Volkswagen and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued another recall for a separate issue affecting not only the Jetta, but several other models as well. The issue revolves around a sealing cap in the fuel rail, which could leak fuel into the engine compartment and potentially cause a fire. The problem affects an estimated 37,979 vehicles in the United States, including the 2014-15 Jetta (manufactured between March 28 and November 24, 2014), the 2014-15 Passat (April 7 to November 18), the 2015 Golf and GTI (July 1 to November 20) and the 2014-15 Beetle and Beetle Convertible (March 31 to November 27). That covers pretty much the entire range offered by Volkswagen of America, short of the Tiguan and Touareg crossovers (and the discontinued Eos convertible). Considering, though, that VW routinely sells around 30,000 vehicles in the US each month, the small number of vehicles being recalled (relative to the quantity out there) tells you this recall really only affects a specific cross-section of models. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to be contacted by their dealers to have the fuel rails replaced. RECALL Subject : Fuel Leaking Into Engine Compartment Report Receipt Date: DEC 22, 2014 NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V809000 Component(s): FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE Potential Number of Units Affected: 37,979 Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jetta vehicles manufactured March 28, 2014, to November 24, 2014, certain 2014-2015 Passat vehicles manufactured April 7, 2014, to November 18, 2014, certain 2015 Golf and GTI vehicles manufactured July 1, 2014, to November 20, 2014, and certain 2014-2015 Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles manufactured March 31, 2014, to November 27, 2014. A sealing cap at the fuel rail may fail, allowing fuel to leak into the engine compartment. CONSEQUENCE: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, can result in a vehicle fire. REMEDY: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rails with new parts, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24Bi.
