You are looking at a rare find.  A late '50s or early '60s (no newer than 1961) Volkswagen Fifteen Window Microbus.  It was purchased in package deal, and the farmer who's grove it was pulled out of is fairly sure he has the titles, but is still looking for them.  If located, a title will be provided with the vehicle, otherwise it will be sold with a bill-of-sale only.  I found what I believe to be the VIN number behind the front seat on the passenger side which is stamped into the steel divider panel.  The number reads 357988.  There may be some other numbers located in the engine compartments, but both vans are parked back-to-back on my trailer with no real way to get them loaded back up if I were to take them off.  I was hoping to leave them on the trailer until sold, then transfer them over onto the buyer's trailer at that time, or else possibly deliver each one in person.  They were gently picked up with a forklift without damage, and set onto my trailer at the location we picked them up from.  I don't have a fork-lift myself, but can carefully drag them off the trailer.  As you can see, I have hubs/drums to go onto the splined axle shafts, which can have wheels bolted up to them, although I only have 3 wheels and would have to round up a 4th in order for it to be sitting on rims.

As you can see, the driver's front end area is damaged from an accident, but could be straightened back out with a porter-power or bottle-jack with a piece of 2x4 so you could get a door hung back on it again.  I'm told they sell the whole front body panel section aftermarket, as well as floor pans, rocker panels, and everything else that needs replacement due to rust.  As you can see in the pictures, the main 2 structural rails that run the length of the vehicle are still solid despite sitting in the dirt for years.  The outer body mounts are rough, as are a lot of other aspects of the van, but I've seen people pull rougher busses than these out of the bottom of a lake to restore.  At one time, they were totally worthless, and when people were finished driving them, they typically just junked them or abandoned them by the side of the road.  Those days are long gone, and finding a 15 window in a grove like this is completely unheard of anymore!  This is an ambitious project, but they are extremely collectible & valuable, so it's well worth restoring.  After pulling it out of the grove & getting it home, I power-washed all the moss & caked on dirt off of it to really expose everything.  It was still wet in the pictures, so it perhaps looks a little worse than it is, but you get a realistic idea of the condition it's in.

It's the more desireable Deluxe model, so it came with all the extra aluminum trim & brightwork that the standard models didn't have.  The rear curved glass is un-broken, but has some milking around the edges.  The rest of the panels are just flat glass that can be cut by any glass shop inexpensively, although many of them are okay as well.  The original round taillights are still there, and unbroken.  There's no engine, but the transaxle is still in there.  I don't have a way to know if it's good.  The vehicle steers, but is't something that can be rolled around at this point without a little more work & a 4th wheel.  If you're looking for a VW Bus project, and don't have the dough to fork out for an already restored one... here's a good start on a very desireable body style.  If you wanted to make it into a 23 window clone, you can buy those little curved roof-glass panels, and install them, as well as sliding ragtops to really make it neat!

By bidding on this vehicle, you acknowledge that it is being sold As Is with no warranty.  I require a $250 security deposit within 3 days of auction's end, and remainder of balance to be paid for in full with cash in person.  If having it shipped, a cashier's check, money order or bank wire-transfer is acceptable, and I will assist with loading.  If you have any other questions, I can be reached afternoons/evenings at (641) 512-5229, or message me through eBay.

Thanks for looking!

Volkswagen building budget car family planned for China in 2018

Mon, Jun 29 2015

Volkswagen has publicly pondered a low-cost car for China, something akin to Nissan's Datsun revival in Southeast Asia, for at least three years. In 2013 it tapped Chinese partner FAW to help develop an entire budget brand, with plans to have something on the market in 2016 in the 6,000- to 8,000-euro range. About a year ago, VW said it couldn't figure out how to engineer an inexpensive car that didn't run counter to the brand's values, then three weeks later said it had overcome the issues. Reuters now reports that VW CEO Martin Winterkorn told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, "We will bring a budget-car family to market in 2018, with an SUV, saloon and hatchback." Winterkorn didn't offer any other details like who VW would work with to build it - VW has partnerships with both FAW and SAIC, but the announcement will be welcomed by the brand's Chinese outpost. When this adventure started, VW said it was working to create a model that would cost 6,000 to 8,000 euro. That estimate has increased. Winterkorn is now saying the 2018 offerings will come in between 8,000 and 11,000 euro. In a straight euro-to-yuan conversion, that would equate to Chinese pricing of 56,000 to 77,000 yuan. For comparison, the New Polo with a 1.4-liter engine and a manual transmission starts at 85,900 yuan. Perhaps with an eye on the success of the Nissan-Renault sub-brand Dacia in Europe and emerging markets, Winterkorn told Bild, "We will see if this is something of interest for other markets as well." On the opposite end of the price/performance spectrum, Winterkorn also said that VW is working on two new models for Bugatti, one powered by a traditional gasoline engine and another with some sort of hybrid setup. The latter model would reportedly be the higher-performing of the two, though it's not clear whether there would be two vehicle lines or two versions of the same vehicle. As ever, as soon as we know more, so will you.

2015 Green Car Of The Year finalists announced, run alt-fuel gamut

Tue, Oct 21 2014

The 2015 edition of the Green Car of the Year award is following right in the footsteps of previous years with a variety of alt-fuel powertrains making the just-announced finalists list. You've got your plug-in vehicle (the BMW i3), your compressed natural gas (the Chevy Impala Bi-Fuel), your high-efficiency diesel (the Audi A3 TDI), your 40+ mile-per-gallon gas engine (the Honda Fit) and, finally, a car that can do a little bit of everything (the VW Golf). The Golf is available – at least in some parts of the US – with three different powertrains: a 2.0-liter diesel, a gasoline engine and all-electric drive. The Impala can burn either natural gas or gasoline in its 3.6-liter engine. The A3 is an efficiency champ, able to get 73.5 mpg on some European tests. The i3 can be a pure electric vehicle or come with a short range extending engine. And the Fit brings 41 miles to the gallon in a practical, affordable package. The GCOY award is announced every year at the Los Angeles Auto Show by Green Car Journal. The committee doesn't just take the fuel-saving technology into account, but also a vehicle's "availability to the mass market." Last year, the Honda Accord Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid won top honors, following up on wins from the Ford Fusion models (plug-in hybrid and hybrid) for 2013, the Honda Civic Natural Gas for 2012 and the Chevrolet Volt for 2011. FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2015 "GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR"" Green Car Journal to Reveal Winner of 10th Annual Award at LA Auto Show" Press & Trade Days, November 20 LOS ANGELES, CA (October 21, 2014) – Green Car Journal has announced its five finalists for the magazine's high-profile 2015 Green Car of the Year® program. The 2015 models include the Audi A3 TDI, BMW i3, Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel, Honda Fit, and VW Golf. The Green Car of the Year® award, an honor widely recognized as the auto industry's most important environmental accolade, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. An increasing number of vehicle models are considered for the Green Car of the Year® program each year, a reflection of the auto industry's expanding efforts in offering new vehicles with higher efficiency and improved environmental impact. Green Car Journal has been honoring the most important "green" vehicles every year at the LA Auto Show, since its inaugural award announced at the show in 2005.

VW confirms Audi's emissions test transmission anomalies

Mon, Nov 14 2016

Just a week after reports that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) found an emissions cheat in some Audi automatic transmission software programs, parent company Volkswagen has come clean. As reported by Reuters, VW's response to an article by Munich's Sueddeutsche Zeitung stated that the adaptive shift functionality can "lead to incorrect and non-reproducible results." Adaptive shift programs alter the characteristics of a vehicle's transmission to suit different driving styles. Gentle driving will result in earlier shifts and lower engine revs, while hard-charging on the pedals and steering will make the transmission more responsive and hold gears longer. That adaptation can change over time or even on a short-term basis. And it can save fuel. The difference in this case is that is seems that the Audi transmissions were specifically programmed to detect emissions test conditions. As we explained in a previous article, one of those test conditions is keeping the wheel straight. Turning more than 15 degrees shuts the test mode off. According to Reuters, the US government is trying to determine whether this classifies as an emissions cheat device, although VW, Audi, and the EPA have not commented on the record. This latest accusation is separate from the larger VW diesel emissions scandal. Related Video: Image Credit: Getty Editorial Government/Legal Green Audi Volkswagen Emissions vw diesel scandal
