!989 Volkswagen Westfalia Gl on 2040-cars

I am listing this vehicle for my wife. Neither her nor I are VW Van experts, so my description of the vehicle will be to the best of our knowledge without a guarantee to the descriptions accuracy.
I believe the van was purchased through a vehicle finder my wife's father hired around 1990. After my wife's father passed away we took ownership of the van. Up until about a year and a half ago the van was in the garage now it is parked on a concrete pad next to the garage. Yesterday I put the battery back in the van and made sure it had a charge. After sitting all winter I turned the key and she fired right up. I let the van warm up and then I took it for a ride around the block. I noticed that the rear brakes are weak, not the pressure in the peddle but a rubbing noise . I suspect that having set all winter they may have some rust on them a neighbor said this is common when a vehicle sits for awhile. As well I noticed the parking brake would not pull up , I suspect this is due to the same cause as the rear brakes. With this all said I would recommend having the brakes looked at before driving any sort of distance. The van does stop but I would get them fixed or adjusted as needed before travel. After my trip around the block I let the van sit in the driveway for about 20 minutes and the radiator fan came on and there were no temp issues. My wife had said that some years ago her father had the engine replaced by the local VW dealership I don't know when, but I have a stack of dealership invoices which come with the van. My wife's father always took the van to the dealership when work was needed. It shifts good, about a year ago we had some hoses that had to do with the steering replaced and the clutch replaced. The things I know are not working due to mechanical failure or my lack of knowledge of the vehicle are as follows. Air conditioner, when I turn it on the fan comes on but no cold air. The rear wiper and sprayer. Passenger side window, electric, does not go down but drivers side does. The speedometer dash light bulb is out. I noticed last year when I taking the van out for a drive the tack stopped working, I tapped on the dash an it started working again. Loose wire maybe? The body. There is rust on the drivers side lower panel that is the worst part. I poked it with a screwdriver and it was solid, I was told to sand it and prime it and then spray some white on it but I thought as we are selling the van it would be better if the new owner knew where the rust was so it could be taken care of properly to the new owners' desire. As well the paint is starting to bubble a little around some of the windows. The bubbles are about the size of a dime. Then there are some pin sized rust spots on some of the panels. It does not seem as the rust has broken through the metal anywhere. The pictures I added tell a better estimate as to the rust. The arms that go the the wheels in the rear have rust on them but I'm told that is surface rust. The black factory undercoating is still intact all over the floor pan. I don't see any issues there. The plastic bumpers do have cracks in them. As far as the fridge, and stove I do not know if they work or not as we don't even know how to turn them on. One note, the underside of the lid on the stove still has the blue scratch resistant film which has never peeled off which leads me to think the stove was never used. All the tables are there as well as curtains. The front and rear seats have no tears in them I would rate them as good condition. The rear lower bed cushion needs to be cleaned but no tears. The upper bed part of the camper looks to never have been used. The camper top does not leak. The fabric has no tears or rips and no mold. I can see no cracks in the fiberglass top, my wife does not ever recall the camper top ever being used. No cracks or chips in the glass that I can see. My wife and I travel quite a bit and the van is not used, she said it is time to find it a good home so someone can continue to enjoy it as much as her parents did. If there are any questions please let me know, please be specific, so I can give as complete answer as possible. We are not offering delivery of his vehicle, it is up to the purchaser to provide transportation from my location to theirs. We require a $500.00 non-refundable deposit on the vehicle within 24 hours. I only say this as I only want serious buyers bidding. Within 48 hours full payment must be made. I will provide an address for the payment to be sent, via certified bank check. I don't recommend sending cash for obvious reasons. As well the new owner may pay cash in person or certified bank check within the 48 hour time frame. Should new owner pay in person with certified bank check, the vehicle and title will not be released until all funds have cleared my bank. I would like the vehicle removed from our location within seven days of purchase. So with that said please understand I have described the vehicle to the best of my knowledge as I know very little about these vehicles. There is no warranty given or implied with the sale of this vehicle. Thanks for looking at our vehicle. Regards, Wayne E bay would not let me enter the vin so here it is WV2ZB0258KHO14471 On Jun-02-14 at 11:37:02 PDT, seller added the following information: I have been asked two questions about the van. The first question is, would I disclose the reserve price of the van, in keeping within the spirit of the auction process I will not be disclosing the reserve price, sorry. The second question was, if the engine was replaced and when. As I stated in our description my wife had thought the engine had been replaced at sometime. Upon inspection of the paperwork I have, I did find the invoice from a VW dealership for an engine replacement. I posted pictures of the invoice. The engine was replaced in 1999. With that said I have no way of knowing the miles put on it since then. I can only speak to my having driven the van locally. Due to the engine having been replaced, I am not implying that the engine is in new condition. I am not making any claims to the condition of the engine other than what I have listed in my description. I have posted a picture of the stack of invoices I have as well the owners manual's are there with the paperwork. I would like to make a correction to something I stated before in my description. I had stated that my wife's father always took the van to the dealership when work was needed on the van. That statement is not true as I looked through the paperwork I have, I noticed that sometimes the van was taken to local service shops for it would seem normal wear items such as brakes, muffler and such and any major components where serviced by VW meaning engine, transmission and such, sorry for the description error. As I said before I am basing my information as best to my knowledge. I just want to be truthful and upfront as I can be. Any further questions I will answer them as quick as I can. Regards, Wayne On Jun-02-14 at 12:03:03 PDT, seller added the following information: I have an update to a question that was asked about the engine. I stated that the new engine was installed in 1999 by VW which is what the dealership invoice says. I also stated I did not know how many miles were driven since then. Upon closer inspection of the dealer invoice for the engine replacement I see a box that says Mileage in/140286/out 140286. I would assume that means the engine was installed when the van had 140286 miles on it, with that being said the current odometer reading is 189078 one could conclude that there has been 48792 miles put on the engine since install. I am basing this off the information I have. |

Volkswagen rules out more potent Polo R
Wed, Dec 10 2014Volkswagen may be planning ever more powerful versions of its Golf, but don't expect that lust for power to trickle down to the smaller Polo anytime soon as the German automaker has reportedly ruled out the prospect of making a Polo R. This according to Autovisie, the automotive section of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, in speaking to VW representatives at the launch of the new Polo GTI. Where the previous Polo GTI offered 177 horsepower, the new one packs 189 and is available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The company briefly offered a Polo WRC Street with 220 horsepower, but that was only for a limited edition that Autovisie says will not be repeated for mainstream production. Which may just be for the best, as far as we're concerned, as no versions of the Polo are offered in the US, and we don't need yet another piece of forbidden fruit we can't get our hands on. The decision may seem at odds with the Polo R WRC rally machine with which Volkswagen has been dominating the World Rally Championship for the past two seasons, but was likely made in order to keep the Polo from infringing on Golf territory. VW currently offers the Golf GTI with 210 horsepower and the Golf R with 292, and showcased an even more powerful version with nearly 400 hp.
VW stripped of Green Car Of The Year awards for Jetta, A3 diesels
Wed, Sep 30 2015In the wake of the ongoing VW diesel scandal, Green Car Journal has announced it will rescind the two Green Car Of The Year awards that the Volkswagen Group won with diesel vehicles that have been since been proven to not meet the stated emissions levels. The two vehicles are the 2009 VW Jetta TDI, which won in 2008, and the 2010 Audi A3 TDI, which won in 2010. Green Car Journal (GCJ) did not say if it would retroactively name any replacement winners. This is the first time in the history of the Green Car Of The Year Awards that the honor has been taken away from the winner. In a statement announcing the change, GCJ publisher Ron Cogan wrote that, "this award rescission should not cast a negative light on advanced diesel technology in general. Many diesel models from a variety of auto manufacturers meet EPA and CARB emissions standards, bringing with them higher fuel efficiency, decreased petroleum use, and lower carbon emissions – all important environmental goals." VW AND AUDI RETURNING GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR® AWARDS, VEHICLES DEEMED INELIGIBLE SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., Sept. 30, 2015 – Green Car Journal is rescinding the Green Car of the Year® awards previously honoring the 2009 VW Jetta TDI and 2010 Audi A3 TDI, the first time this has occurred in the award program's decade-long history. Audi of America President Scott Keogh has informed Green Car Journal that Audi will return its 2010 Green Car of the Year® award in the wake of Volkswagen Group's admission that it deliberately deceived government authorities about emissions from the Audi A3 TDI. Volkswagen of America has also informed Green Car Journal it will return its 2009 Green Car of the Year® award for the VW Jetta TDI. "Rescinding the Green Car of the Year® awards for the VW Jetta TDI and Audi A3 TDI is unfortunate but appropriate," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. "These models were selected as Green Car of the Year® above others for compelling reasons, including high fuel efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, a fun-to-drive nature, and the ability to meet 50 state emissions requirements with advanced diesel technology." However, VW Group has now admitted that its software programming intentionally caused in-lab emissions testing to read significantly lower nitrogen oxide emissions than these vehicles actually produced on the road.
New Audi design chief Massimo Frascella shaped cars for Jaguar Land Rover
Sat, Feb 17 2024At the Audi brand, style and design have long been a high priority; think the super sleek and sexy A7 sedan, the Bauhaus-inspired TT coupe, the single-frame grille that instantly identified the marque with its down-the-road graphics. So when the Bavarians install a new head of design, that’s also worth a look. Massimo Frascella is that person, a 52-year-old Italian designer who this summer will succeed Marc Lichte. Lichte ran Audi design since 2014 and will take up a new role within the Volkswagen Group. Frascella, a student at the Istituto d`Arte Applicata & Design in Turin, ignited his career at Stile Bertone, and his resume after that evolves impressively. He subsequently held positions at Ford Motor Company and Kia, and since 2011, Frascella has held senior positions at Jaguar Land Rover. He was responsible for the creation of several models: Discovery Vision Concept (2014), Discovery Sport (2014), Discovery (2016), Velar (2017), Evoque (2019) and Defender. In 2019 he became creative director of Land Rover and in 2020 design director. He was also instrumental in the development of the range of new electric Jaguars that are in the works. “Joining Audi is a very special moment for me,” Frascella said. “I am deeply honored to assume the role of chief creative officer and to guide such a talented team in shaping the future of the brand to new heights of innovation and distinction. I believe in the emotional power of design to inspire, connect, and drive change, and I am here to nurture and promote creativity as the beating heart of our brand.” Looking back a couple of decades, it was one of FrascellaÂ’s predecessors who helped to cement AudiÂ’s reputation in automobile design: Walter de Silva. De Silva was appointed head of Audi design in 2002. From 2007 to 2015, he supervised the design strategy for the entire Volkswagen group, including the TT, the Scirocco, the Passat and the Golf. Not a bad list of achievements, but in a interview several years ago, de Silva said that he considered the 2007 Audi A5 coupe the pinnacle of his automotive design art, citing its “sex appeal, the shape of the lights, the architecture.” Design/Style Audi Jaguar Land Rover Volkswagen Automotive History
