Vw Beetle Original Low Miles - 1976 on 2040-cars
Pella, Iowa, United States

Rock solid Beetle, no rust, dents, original paint. Paint shows some scratches to be expected on a 38 year old car. Interior nice, no torn upholstery, liners clean. Glass all good. Chrome good, bumpers show some pitting. Rubber seals and moldings are solid. Starts and runs well. Has fuel injection, recently replaced airflow meter, fuel pump and vacuum control with genuine Bosch parts. Tires look good but my tire service tells me a couple of them are slightly out of round, resulting in a slight shimmy occasionally on a rough road. No problem at higher speed. I would have replaced but can't find an original size locally and don't want to put an odd (not original) size on. Padding in seats is deteriorating and should be replaced. I haven't because I haven't found information on the original materials used - only foam from JC Whitney. Car has no radio or antenna, never has had. A joy to drive. I'm just getting too old to get in and out comfortably and don't want to add a lot of miles anyway. $500 deposit via Paypal on purchase - balance due at pickup. No personal checks. Call with any questions. 641-780-8273

Porsche 911 with VW turbodiesel prepares for LeMons assault
Fri, 21 Mar 2014LeMons racing is a wonderful example that setting limits can actually breed creativity. The series mandates that all entries must cost $500, not counting safety equipment, and that cap forces teams to be ingenious in how they build a racecar. Take for example this diesel-powered Porsche 911, which its creators have dubbed Ferkel the Nein-11, that will be racing in the Sears Pointless race this weekend in Sonoma, California.
This Frankenstein combines a 911 chassis that was originally bought just for its European powertrain and a Volkswagen TDI diesel engine mounted in the rear. After deciding the shell could still be of some use, the team decided to go racing. "We began brainstorming what replacement drivetrain to use for maximum offense and there was really only one answer: a diesel," said Philipp von Weitershausen, one of the team captains, to Jalopnik. They bought a 1998 Jetta TDI on the cheap and started figuring out a way to hack the engine into the bay. To pay respect to the donor, the VW's trunk was highly modified (and drilled) and grafted onto the back of Ferkel.
This team isn't a newcomer to LeMons. Its last car was a classic VW Beetle with a Subaru engine and dual controls, named Ferdinand the Bug, which could be driven from the left or right side. It's quite a sight.
VW recalls 1.1M Jetta, Beetle models in US, China over suspension fears
Fri, 17 Oct 2014Volkswagen is recalling about 1.1 million vehicles in China and North America in a newly announced campaign affecting the rear suspensions on some models. For the US, the action covers about 442,265 vehicles, including 400,602 examples of its 2011-2013 Jetta and 41,663 units of the 2012-2013 Beetle and Beetle Convertible. According to Reuters, the recall affects a further 126,000 vehicles in Canada and about 581,090 in China, including related market-specific models like the Sagitar.
The problem can occur if the affected models have a collision to the rear or the side-rear of the vehicle. It's then possible for the trailing arms on the torsion-beam rear suspension to be damaged. If the harm isn't noticed, then the part could fracture while driving. Obviously, a broken rear suspension is going to have an adverse effect on handling.
To fix things, VW dealers will inspect the trailing arms on the models, and they will all receive a sheetmetal part that will make a distinctive sound if broken in the future. If already damaged, the entire torsion beam will be replaced. Obviously, this work will be done at no charge to owners.
