1974 Superbeetle Convertible on 2040-cars
Menlo Park, California, United States
My dear buggy is up for sale -- I just have too many projects going on. She starts up every time, and runs very smooth -- I use her as my daily driver during the dry months. Always parked in the garage, and regularly maintained, mostly by The Buggy House in Hayward.
Not the original engine, nor the original color. New engine has about 8,500 miles on it. Odometer reads 49,536 because it's limited to 5 digits, but almost certainly has wrapped around once before, which is why it's listed as 149,536. Brand new bluetooth stereo with subwoofer is loud enough to hear your music with the top down on the highway. 1600cc engine will gladly do 70mph, and gets great gas mileage to boot (~35mpg, with mixed driving). Clutch and 4 speed manual shift smooth. Front lights upgraded to self-leveling Xenons, so you can actually see where you're going at night. Brand new battery has about twenty drives under its belt; also has a new fuel pump and injector. Interior is in great condition: seats are spotless, new door panels still shine, and relatively new carpet kit make this car a pleasure to drive. The top is in medium condition, and doesn't leak. The body is in OK condition, couple dents, and the paint could use a little love. A little investment would make this buggy a real head-turner. 1974 model year is smog exempt, so none of those headaches involved. Mechanically she's very strong and reliable. She does drip a little oil, but does not burn it. I would really like her to go to a good home that appreciates her as much as I do. Previous owner had her for 10 years, and felt similarly. Lots of spare parts included as well. Please let me know if you have any questions. I will cancel any bids from those who have less than 5 feedback unless you write me first. I'm happy to ship her anywhere, but buyer pays for shipping. If you want to see her in person, I am more than happy to facilitate that, and would be willing to meet you anywhere between San Mateo and Mountain View. |

Bentley considering diesel engine for new SUV
Wed, 05 Mar 2014Turns out, in case you didn't know, the rich are just like regular people. They too are concerned about the environment, even when tooling around town in their super-luxurious Bentleys. So the automaker is weighing the idea of offering a diesel engine in its SUV offering, which could help satisfy customers' demands for more fuel-efficient engines.
Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Schreiber told Autoblog in a roundtable interview at the Geneva Auto Show that the automaker is researching whether or not a diesel engine makes sense for the brand. Bentley, owned by the Volkswagen Group, could in theory use a diesel engine from anywhere in the Volkswagen Group family. We at Autoblog have hopes they'll revive the V10 TDI used in the VW Touareg until 2010, but ever-stricter emissions laws would likely make that problematic.
But rich people aren't so much like us that they'll be worried about petty things like pricing. Schreiber admitted the diesel engine could be a $15,000 option, which he said customers would probably find "acceptable." Given that the cheapest Bentley today starts at $177,000, typical customers probably won't be diddling around worrying about an extra 15 grand.
South Korea to file criminal charges against VW exec
Wed, Jan 20 2016South Korea has tossed out Volkswagen's recall plans and is preparing to level criminal charges over its handling of the diesel emissions catastrophe, The Wall Street Journal reports. "Recall plans the company submitted to us earlier this month were insufficient and lacked key information, and thus are unacceptable," the South Korean Ministry of Environment said in a statement obtained by the WSJ. A ministry official hinted at the possibility of criminal charges earlier this month if VW's recall plan wasn't satisfactory, the Yonhap News Agency reports, and now it looks like it will actually follow through. According to the WSJ, South Korea has already ordered VW to recall 125,000 vehicles and slapped the automaker with a $12.3 million fine – one of the many countries to do so – but if it follows through with criminal charges against the company or its employees, it'd be among the earliest to so. Other countries, including the United States, are still exploring the possibility of criminal charges. Charges would likely come against both Audi Volkswagen Korea and its managing director, Johannes Thammer. It's not clear what the actual charge would be, but the WSJ claims Thammer could be facing up to five years in prison and a fine of 30 million won (around $24,700 at today's rates). For its part, VW officials in South Korea maintains that it is "doing its utmost to resolve the emissions issue" and that it plans to "offer further explanation" to authorities regarding its proposal for an emissions and fuel mileage fix in that country.
