LISTED WITH NO RESERVE.  1972 Classic Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible, nice looking car, very well maintained.

Much has been updated and upgraded on this car, to include:

  • New convertible top and roof liner, installed 11/11/2013
  • New heater components consisting of
  • New heat exchangers (heater boxes)
  • New ducting in front to improve defrost functionality
  • Installation of two heater blowers inline with the heater boxes, which are surrounding the exhaust manifolds - these blowers
  •  were purchased from a dealer who represented spare parts off of NASCAR
  • racing cars, and these units were originally designed as blowers in the engine
  •  compartments of large yachts to ventilate any fuel fumes, but were later re-
  • designed by Roush Racing to cool their NASCAR brake systems.  These blowers
  • have 'RK 191' written on them, indicating one of Roush Team race cars, but I can't determine
  •  which one, maybe somebody else with Roush Racing team info can determine this.
  • New exhaust system
  • New engine dress up components to include fan shroud, engine tin and other misc. parts
  • Recent low profile directional tires, giving the car a low slung modern look (for a 41 year old car)
  • New carpeting and floor mats, both inside the car and forward trunk areas
  • New seat belts
  • New correct spare tire and rim, fully inflated, lug wrench
All mechanical components have been checked for reliability, including all brakes, CV joints, engine, transmission and clutch, electrical system.
Too many other minor parts and components have been replaced to mention without leaving something out, please ask if you have questions.

NOTE: there are several systems that were engineered by the German VW teams back in the 1940's through 1972 when this car came off of the assembly line, and some of them were just plain lousy engineering, and I replaced them, namely the windshield washer system and the heater system.  Both were just barely functional even when brand new, and in my opinion unacceptable.

Heater system: in line with the heat exchangers but before the flapper valve running into the passenger compartment, I have installed two 12 volt electric blower fans, than when engaged blow perhaps as much as a 500% increase in air flow than the original German system.  So much heated air is generated by these fans (formerly installed on NASCAR race vehicles), that I had to install a rheostat to control the fan speed so that the interior compartment does not get too hot (nobody ever said that about a convertible VW Beetle before).  This unit, when the levers are set to defrost, generate a healthy heated air flow to the windshield ducts, and the system works as it should have been designed 50 years ago, but wasn't.  Because the car is air cooled, no water is used in the heating system, and accordingly the heat exchangers start putting out heat after only about 30 seconds after the car has been started from a stone cold engine left over night in a cold garage, and once just a minimum amount of heat is available, the NASCAR heater pumps force warm air into the drivers compartment almost immediately.  Any other car takes several minutes to warm the coolant that provides heat to the interior of any standard car, but this VW has heat right away, regardless of how cold it is outside.

Windshield washer system: the original German system on these cars had the spare tire providing pressure to the washer fluid reservoir, and then plumbed up to the windshield wiper control inside the car, then on to the windshield washer nozzle on the hood.  Each and every step along the way, leaks could occur through normal wear and aging of the rubber components, and failure anywhere along the line would depressurize the tank along with the spare tire.  Any failure anywhere in the system would ensure not only no pressure to the windshield washer, but also ensure a flat spare tire.  Terrible engineering, in my opinion.  I removed all of this, and simply installed an electric washer pump designed for a 1981 Toyota Camry at the bottom of the washer reservoir, and wired a control button to below the dashboard, where failure of this system is extremely low: no chance of losing your spare tire air, and virtually no chance of losing pressure to the windshield washer nozzle on the hood.

The condition of the car is very good, but the car is 41 years old, after all.  Relatively rust free Colorado car now in Illinois, but there are some minor areas with surface rust but nothing structurally significant.  The older paint job on the car still shines nicely, but there are many areas that had touch up paint applied, and some cracks and checking are apparent on the hood and elsewhere, but it does not really affect the generally nice appearance of the car.

2015 Volkswagen Golf R [w/video]

Mon, Nov 24 2014

Volkswagen hired a photographer to come shoot the handful of journalists that it brought to drive the 2015 Golf R at Buttonwillow Raceway north of Los Angeles. This fact, though unremarkable in and of itself, was something I hadn't noticed until I was well into my track time – probably ten laps deep on a day that would see me run twice that number. In any event, I noticed the intrepid shooter as he was sprinting from one side of the track to the other somewhere before Turn 2, while I was barreling down the main straightaway, still looking through Turn 1. In the roughly two-mile configuration of the track that I drove, Buttonwillow is a big, wide-open circuit, largely flat and with excellent overall visibility. On that layout, and just hours into my Golf R experience, I'd already become confident in endeavoring to push the limits of VW's latest blistering hatch. In fact, the easy nature of driving the thing quickly had me overestimating my pace. So when I saw the photog sprint across the tarmac I instinctively slowed way too much, way too early for Turn 1. Looking back at the incident after I'd pitted for the session, I laughed at myself, knowing I'd have had to be driving almost double my actual speed to put the camera guy in any real danger of being hit. But the experience crystallized what my full test of the R bore out: this is a car that makes you feel much faster than you otherwise would, at least in a competition setting. The 2015 Golf R is an uber hatch that will flatter those hyper-enthusiasts passionate enough to splash out on its steep price tag, but without threatening sales of core models like the GTI and its ilk. That's a good thing for the VW fanboys, to be sure, and, I'd argue, a great thing for the strength of the German brand overall. {C} The R felt both placid and comfortable while I clicked off highway miles in search of the racetrack. My test in California had at least two things in common with the First Drive feature that Steve Ewing brought us with the Golf R in Sweden. First, we both drove European specification cars (though mine didn't suffer from the same sticker abuse that Steve's did). Second, we were both somewhat limited in terms of driving the car in varied, real-world situations. My street route consisted almost entirely of tracking California's I-5 north out of Los Angeles; which any Angelino will tell you is a less-than-riveting mode of travel.

VW midsize crossover production headed for Chattanooga

Fri, 10 Jan 2014

Potential labor woes aside, it looks like Volkswagen's Chattanooga, TN factory must have done something that impressed the bosses in Germany, because it sounds like the three-year-old factory is set to score a second model.
The factory currently builds the Passat, and has been in the running alongside VW's Puebla, Mexico factory to build a new crossover vehicle, likely based on the CrossBlue Concept. According to Bloomberg, a pair of unnamed sources have confirmed that Chattanooga is the favorite ahead of an official announcement.
When last we heard about the CrossBlue Concept, word was that a production decision had been delayed over concerns about the three-row CUV's business case. That August 2013 story claimed that a decision regarding the CrossBlue would be pushed back until early in 2014, which means we're ripe for some sort of news, whether good or bad.

Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Audi announce Takata recalls

Wed, Feb 10 2016

Daimler, Volkswagen, and Audi will recall nearly 1.7 million total vehicles in the US to replace their Takata airbag inflators. The Japanese parts supplier and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced in late January that several automakers would need to fix around five million more vehicles, and the various companies have been releasing the details since then. Daimler has a recall for 841,000 vehicles in the US, including 705,000 from Mercedes-Benz and 136,000 from the company's van division. Reuters reports the affected models consist of 2005-2014 examples of the SLK-Class, C-Class, E-Class, M-Class, GL-Class, R-Class, and SLS-Class. The vans comprise the 2007-2014 models of the Dodge, Freightliner, and Mercedes Sprinter. Autoblog reached out to Mercedes USA to confirm these details, and we're awaiting a reply. Daimler expects the repair campaign to cost 340 million euros ($382 million at current rates). The company will book the costs as part of its financial year 2015 results, and net profit for that year will fall to 8.7 billion euros ($9.8 billion). Volkswagen's recall covers 680,000 vehicles in the US to replace their driver side airbags. The affected models have Takata's SDI and PSDI-5 inflators, which could rupture in an crash, but the automaker isn't aware of any explosions for these parts in its products. This campaign includes: 2006-2010 Passat Sedan and Wagon (German Production) 2012-2014 Eos 2010-2014 Golf 2010-2014 Jetta SportWagen 2012-2014 Passat (U.S. Production) 2009-2014 CC There are also 170,000 Audi vehicles with the SDI and PSDI-5 inflators in the US, but there are no reports of the parts rupturing in the company's models. The affected products are: 2005-2013 A3 2006-2009 A4 Cabrio 2009-2012 Q5 2010-2011 A5 Cabrio VW and Audi are still working to identify the specific VINs for these vehicles. Afterwards, they will notify affected owners. Ford, Mazda, and Honda already announced details for their new round of Takata repairs. VW and Audi also recalled a small number of Tiguans and Q5s to replace their side airbag inflators from the Japanese company. NHTSA still expects BMW and Saab to detail expanded safety campaigns.
