1968 Volkswagen Beetle

Up for auction is one, 1968 Volkswagen Standard Beetle. I recently purchased this beetle in August 2012. It was my goal to restore the beetle. Unfortunately, I have come to the realization that I do not have the time to invest to properly complete the project.

By no means am I a Volkswagen expert. However I will try my best to provide you with the most accurate description as I possible can.

As I'm sure you are already aware, there are many beetles scarrated throughout the nation, waiting to be restored. However, the major attribute that attracted me to this beetle were the "matching numbers."

Chassis ID# 118 152 632 (manufactured in September 1967)

Body ID# 118 152 632 (the original ID plate is still mounted inside the trunk, behind the spare tire)

Engine ID# H5 059 933 (44bhp DIN1500 M157) (manufactured in September 1967)

In addition to the matching numbers, I was attracted to this beetle's clean, unmolested condition. Sure, there are some bumps and bruises but overall, the beetle is fully intact.

Mechanically, the beetle is also in good shape. When I purchased the beetle, I drove 45 miles home without any issues. The transmission is solid and shifting is smooth. There is no popping out of gear. Reverse works without any issues as well.

The odometer reads 8,764. Obviously, I would imagine that the odometer has rolled over once increasing the milage to 108,764, However, I have no way of documenting this information.

Since, I've owned the beetle, I have adjusted the valves and changed the oils. In doing so new silicone valve cover gaskets were installed as well as a new oil strainer, silicone oil strainer gasket, and oil drain plug. All parts were purchased from Wolfsburg West.

The lights work including the headlights, brake lights, and both front and rear turn indicators. The horn works.

I start and drive the beetle about once a week two keep everything up and running. One issue the beetle is currently displaying is a tendency to stall at stops. I would like to think that this is a simple adjustment or a matter of cleaning the carburetor. I have not attempted to isolate the problem.

Please note that this beetle is registered as a historic vehicle. It has not been inspected. As a result, the vehicle will not come with a Maryland inspection certificate.

This beetle has a clear, Maryland title in hand.

The GOOD:
Good template for full restoration beetle
Matching engine, chassis, and body ID numbers
The beetle starts and runs
Rust is minimal, most is surface rust only
Both heater channels are intact
Locks work
Spare Tire
Container for windshield wiper and cable included
Jack Included
Windows crank up and down
Seat belts work and retract
Seats are clean
Radio precut in the dash is still present
Original steering wheel
Matching numbers
Electrical components work (indicator lights, head lights, tail lights, turn indicators, license plate light, horn)
Fuel gauge works
Odometer works

The NOT SO GOOD
Tendency to stall at stop signs and traffic lights.
Interior light does not work
Window, windshield, and back glass rubber needs to be replaced (slight moisture on interior after precipitation)

By no means am I a Volkswagen expert. However, I do believe that this is a solid and sound Volkswagen Beetle. I also believe that it is a strong candidate for a complete restoration. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will do my best to answer any and all of your questions. I would prefer if this vehicle is picked up from it's current location in Parkville, MD. However, if you are interested in having the beetle shipped, please contact me prior to auction's end so that proper arrangements can be discussed.

Germany says nein to EU ban on new fossil-fuel cars from 2035

Tue, Jun 21 2022

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's government will not agree to European Union plans to effectively ban the sale of new cars with combustion engines from 2035, Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Tuesday. In its bid to cut planet-warming emissions by 55% by 2030 from 1990 levels, the European Commission has proposed a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars by 2035. That means it would be impossible to sell combustion engine cars from then. European Parliament lawmakers backed the proposals this month, before negotiations with EU countries on the final law take place. Speaking at an event hosted by Germany's BDI industry association, Lindner said there would continue to be niches for combustion engines so a ban was wrong and said the government would not agree to this European legislation. Lindner, a member of the pro-business Free Democrats, which shares power with the Social Democrats and Greens, said Germany would still be a leading market for electric vehicles. ACEEE strips away VW's green car scores

Sun, Sep 27 2015

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) is confirming that the Volkswagen diesel-emissions scandal has put a black mark on its green ratings. As a result, the group is pulling VW diesel vehicles off of its "Green Scores" list because it was recently revealed that VW diesels might be emitting as much as 40 times the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions during normal driving as the official test results show. The ACEEE added that other German makers of diesel vehicles' "Green Scores" are safe, for now. Diesels from VW and the company's Audi division didn't exacatly top the ACEEE's list of greenest vehicles for 2015. That honor went to electric vehicles like the Smart ForTwo ED, Chevrolet Spark EV and Fiat 500E. The Toyota Prius C hybrid snuck in at number 4, while the Nissan Leaf battery-electric took the fifth spot. That said, the VW diesels did perform pretty well, according to the group. "These scores are no longer reasonable estimations of the environmental impact of the Volkswagen diesels. Volkswagen's diesel cars have performed well on ACEEE's annual rankings since 2009, hovering just below our list of the top twelve "Greenest" vehicles with Green Scores in the high 40s," wrote Shruti Vaidyanathan, senior transportation researcher at the ACEEE. "However, a 40-fold increase in on-road NOx would mean that these vehicles did not deserve those high Green Scores." For those curious, the Ram 2500 pickup topped the ACEEE's "Meanest" vehicle of 2015, followed by the Chevrolet G2500 Express/GMC Savana. No diesels showed up on that list of environmentally-damaging vehicles. You can read the ACEEE's statement on VW below. Why we are suspending Volkswagen diesel Green Scores on greenercars.org by Shruti Vaidyanathan, Senior Transportation Researcher On September 18th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) slapped the Volkswagen Group with a notice of violation (link is external) of the Clean Air Act for circumventing EPA emission standards for nitrogen oxides (NOx). Volkswagen has now acknowledged using so-called "defeat devices" on its diesel cars that turn on full emissions control technologies while in testing mode but allow the vehicles to emit nitrogen oxide levels up to 40 times the certified level during normal operation.

We got our first looks at look at Ford's new Super Duty truck lineup this week but it's Volkswagen that has been dominating the news cycle, as Matthias Muller is named CEO of the embattled automaker. Autoblog's Senior editor Greg Migliore reports on the recap edition of Autoblog Minute. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] We got our first looks at look at Ford's new Super Duty truck lineup this week but it's Volkswagen that has dominated the news cycle as Matthias Muller is named CEO of the embattled automaker. I'm Senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. Super Duty is new for 2017. Our first look at these heavy duty trucks showed increased cab space for passengers, and [00:00:30] a lighter aluminum frame. Ford insists these changes will provide customers with increased towing capacity and fuel efficiency. The all-new Super Duty will be built at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, and it goes on sale in late 2016. Now, in case you missed it Volkswagen is under fire for gaming EPA emissions testing. A massive government recall is in the works and the world's top-selling automaker is looking at significant losses in both car sales and its stock value. On top of losing billions of dollars, Volkswagen is also facing [00:01:00] legal issues. And this week we saw Martin Winterkorn step down as CEO of Volkswagen Group. These changes mark just the beginning of VW's arduous process of rebuilding consumer trust. Those are the highlights from the week that was. Be sure to check out my full recap this Saturday, plus some added insight on the Buick Cascada and its pricing strategy. For Autoblog, I'm Greg Migliore.
