1984 VW Rabbit Diesel

Welcome to my auction. I am offering for sale my 1984 VW Rabbit diesel. I have had this car for three years, and regularily drive it. It has been a fun and dependable little car, and has seen regular maintenance and care, and no accidents. It has 256k miles, but it is in better shape than many rabbits half its mileage.

The car is largely stock, it has all original panels, no bondo, and original paint. It is mostly rust free, and the oly places where there is rust developing is at the bottom of the right door, as seen in one of the photos.

The glass is excellent throughout, no chips or cracks.Mirrors are all great.

All electrical systems work fine, dash instruments, speedometer, odometer, clock, fuel indicator, high/low beams, turn signals, rear brake & reverse, cabin light, dash lights, cigarette lighter, radio, glovebox. Rear defroster works great.

All locks, window cranks, etc work fine.

The engine runs strong (as strong as it ever did). The glow plug system is excellent, the car will start immediately even after sitting for weeks in the coldest weather. It idles fine, and have never had any problems with overheating or running cold, even at 100 degree weather in stop & go traffic, the temperature needle will stay in the middle. I have driven this guy many times from Portland to the beach (110 miles), and many times from Portland to Seattle, never an issue. Transmission shifts fine, all 4 gears and reverse, no slipping / noise issues

In the 3 years, the following extensive maintenance was done:

  • New headliner (3 years ago, still looks perfect)
  • Rebuilt injection pump (3 years ago)
  • Rebuilt heater, it's now VERY hot.
  • New carpet (removed old carpet, inspected sheet metal floor and it was excellect, protective anti-rust primer and paint, put new sound insulation and new carpet, all last year)
  • New vinyl upholstery (Purchased from M&T Manufacturing, installed last year)
  • All new glow plugs (last year)
  • Brand new Hella headlights, with PIAA bulbs, VERY bright (last year)
  • New cutoff solenoid (last year)
  • New air filter and fuel filter (MANN/Mahle, last year)
  • New headlight switch (last year)
  • New blue instrument cluster bulbs (last year)
  • New reverse light switch (last year)
  • All new brakes (bought from the PartsPlace, rotors, pads, bearings, shoes, springs, rebuilt brake calipers, installed this year)
  • Brand new ATE brake master cylinder (a $270 part alone, installed this year, flushed brake system with new fluid)
  • New old stock Grundig radio fastastic sound, new speakers in the rear and new speaker wire (this year)
  • New radio antenna
  • New battery (this year)
  • Brand new door deals(bought this year from MK1 Haus, doors seal fantastic now, and the car is much quieter)

The only few issues I'm aware of are:

  • The front turn signals sometimes blink twice as fast, this is due to the lamp sockets being old. I would change the sockets if you can find new ones.
  • The CV boots it the front have tears, and it would be a good idea to change them
  • The car is due for an oil change
  • Rust at the bottom passenger door.

All in all, this is a great car, and with maintenace it will serve you faithfully. It is not fast, and it is not quiet. I drive it on the highway at 60 mpg, and it would return 51 mpg on highway only, or about 46 mpg combined. Personally, I would not hesitate to drive this cross country, but being an old car, it is sold without any guarantees or returns.

Please shoot with questions. A $500 non-refundable Paypal fee is expected within 48 hours from the end of the auction by the winner. The balance is due within one week, in the form of a bank check. If you are in Portland OR, I would encourage you to drop by and have a look at it in person. Good luck!

Translogic 171: EV West Karmann Ghia Electric Conversion

Wed, Feb 25 2015

Translogic checks out EV West, one of the world leaders in electric vehicle conversions. Host Jonathon Buckley interviews EV West owner Michael Bream and test drives a converted 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. What drives EV West to electrify classic cars may surprise some. "We're not doing this because we're the hardcore environmentalists or we're trying to save the earth," says Bream. "If we can't at least double your horsepower and torque, we won't touch the car." In fact, EV West brings a race-tested performance pedigree to back up those boasts. The company competed in the electric class at Pikes Peak, has run through the desert at Baja, and in general has successfully proved that battery-electric vehicles can compete at a high level. VW still set on Phaeton redux despite cost-cutting drive and losing $32k per car

Wed, Jan 28 2015

While critically well regarded, the Volkswagen Phaeton has proven to be a vehicle largely unloved by luxury buyers around the world. Despite this, it refuses to die. While VW's luxury sedan hasn't been sold in the US since 2006 due to low sales here, it has soldiered on in Europe with occasional updates. As the model's long lifespan has been winding down, VW has decided to keep pushing the Phaeton into a new generation, despite in-house alternatives like the Audi A8 and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. The move might not make much business sense, but Volkswagen executives are determined to make the Phaeton work. According to market analysts speaking to Reuters, developing the next-gen luxury sedan on the MLB platform could cost as much as 650 million euros ($737 million), despite relying on the same underpinnings in the A8. It's not like the Phaeton is leading the luxury sedan sales ranks, either. Reuters notes VW produced just 5,812 of them in 2013 (the most current year with data), and from 2002 to 2012, the automaker reportedly lost 28,000 euros ($32,000) on each example sold. Conversely, Mercedes-Benz sold 103,737 units of its new S-Class in 2014, an astonishing 82.2 percent jump over the previous year. The decision to keep the Phaeton going doesn't seem to square with the VW brand's cost-cutting strategy. Boss Martin Winterkorn announced last year a plan to save 5 billion euros ($5.7 billion) annually in the coming years. That plan reportedly also includes killing off less profitable models. Apparently, VW can't just rip off the band-aid and get rid of the Phaeton. Even some VW bosses seem somewhat perplexed at the sedan's business case. When Reuters asked the company's US boss Michael Horn about selling the Phaeton here, he said. "That's a dangerous question. It's an image bearer with no relevance for volume." The next-gen Phaeton is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in 2017 or 2018, according to Reuters, which is about a year later than previous rumors. A US launch will reportedly follow in 2018 or 2019 with the plug-in hybrid and potentially even diesel versions on offer. A starting price around $70,000 is estimated. Why this could be the perfect time for Apple to make a car play

Fri, Aug 31 2018

While the automotive and technology worlds have been pouring billions into autonomous vehicles (AVs) and preparing to bring them to market soon as shared robo-taxis, Apple has mostly sat on the sidelines. Of course, Apple is the last company to ever make its intentions known, and the super-secret tech cult giant hasn't been totally out of the AV game based on the clues that have slipped out of its Cupertino, Calif., citadel over the past few years. Related: Apple self-driving cars are real — one was just in an accident News first broke in 2015 that it had assembled an automotive development team, in part by poaching high-profile talent from car companies, to work on a top-secret self-driving vehicle project code-named Titan. (Thank you very much, Nissan.) Apple also subsequently broke cover by making inquiries into using a Northern California AV testing facility and receiving a permit to test AVs on public roads in California. But then as the AV race started to heat up in the last few years, Apple reportedly began scaling back its car activities by downsizing team Titan. More recently, Apple's car project has shown signs of life with the hiring a high-level engineer away from Waymo and luring one Tesla's top engineers and a former employee back to Apple. It also inked a deal with Volkswagen to provide a technology platform and software to convert the automaker's new T6 Transporter vans into autonomous shuttles for employees at tech company's new campus. That is a far cry from giving rides to Wal-Mart shoppers, like Waymo is doing as part of its AV testing in Phoenix. But this could be the perfect time for Apple to enter the AV market now that ride-sharing is reaching critical mass and automakers and others are planning to deploy fleets of robo-taxis. Apple could easily establish a niche as a high-end ride-sharing service – and charge a premium – given its cult-like brand loyalty and design savvy. The growth of car subscription models could also play in Apple's favor since is already has many people hooked on paying for phones in monthly installments – and eager to upgrade when a new and better model becomes available. To achieve this, some believe Apple will fulfill co-founder and CEO Steve Job's dream of building a car. And as the world's first and only $1 trillion company it's sitting on a mountain of cash that certainly gives it the means. But other tech darlings like Tesla and Google have discovered how difficult it can be to build cars at scale.
