It is with some sadness that I offer my 2008 VW R32 for sale. It is a brilliant car and has been nothing but a pleasure to own.  More than a hopped-up GTI, this car is a solid, refined road rocket.

The basics:
?3.2L V6, 250hp, 6-speed DSG (paddle shift) transmission, AWD
?VIN WVWKC71K88W173573
?Clean HI title, recently completed dealer 70K mile service
?71,7xx miles (currently my daily driver)
?Deep Blue Metallic exterior, waxed every three months without fail
?Black leather interior, conditioned at least twice per year
?Came standard fully loaded with all options except nav - everything works
?100% bone stock/unmolested - no mechanical or cosmetic modifications (except for WeatherTech floormats in front, rear and trunk)
?Garage kept and dealer serviced (records go with the car)
?One of the most reliable cars I've ever owned, has not had a single mechanical defect in 2.5 years of ownership.

?Includes both (functioning) key fobs, valet key and owner's manual

 Negatives:
?Headliner needs replacement. It sags around the dome light above the rear seat. I've managed to keep it up using some black tape, but new owner may prefer a more professional solution. The good news is you don't see it unless you sit in the back.
?At recent service, VW recommended new brake rotors. I held off because I knew I was going to sell the car and this is a personal preference - new owner may want to go with drilled or slotted rotors, or keep them OEM. Brakes are plenty strong as they stand, but this is likely a maintenance item on the horizon.
?All of the wheels have some light curb rash, but are in otherwise good condition. Tires are all-seasons and have lots of life left in them.

The R32 is fast, reliable and pretty much the perfect commuter car for the enthusiast driver. It's small and fast enough to fly through traffic, and the DSG has a great jeckyl/hyde personality (will happily loaf comfortably in auto/D, or you can go into Forza-mode and paddle shift). With AWD, it feels rock solid at all speeds and has a great launch control feature that allows for some pretty spectacular standing starts. And the hands-down best part about this car? The exhaust note. This is the best-sounding stock exhaust on any car I've owned. It's snarly, raspy and menacing. It really adds a lot to the driving experience.

I'm reluctant to sell as this is one of the absolute best vehicles I've owned. However, the timelines associated with relocating and shipping a vehicle to the east coast don't support me keeping it. This is a future classic. It has been well-kept during my ownership and you will absolutely love owning and driving this king of the hatchbacks.

The car is driven daily, so mileage will rise (about 30 miles per day).  It's for sale locally - I will cancel the auction early if it sells.  I'll be happy to assist with shipping the vehicle anywhere the new owner wants to send it, at their expense.  Bidders with zero feedback need not bother, unless you contact me first.  Thanks for your interest!

Audi considers a rugged SUV — maybe on the Scout platform

Fri, Jan 27 2023

Audi engineers are formulating plans to possibly build a “super saloon” luxury off-roader SUV in 2027, It would compete in a segment that now includes the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, according to a report in BritainÂ’s Autocar. According to Audi designer Marc Lichte, quoted in the story, the platform for the new model could be borrowed from the Volkswagen GroupÂ’s recently announced sister brand, Scout Motors, which is currently developing electric-powered concepts and prototypes. While Audi has developed a PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture for its base EV lineup, that would be replaced in the planned model with ScoutÂ’s ladder chassis to provide the steep departure angles and ground clearance needed to negotiate tough terrain, as well as with the latest generation of AudiÂ’s Quattro four-wheel-drive technology, Autocar reports. Audi is well into development of its Activesphere project, an enticing design blend of coupe and hatchback. The Activesphere uses PPE, co-developed by Audi and Porsche, and will appear in a production Audi product by the end of this year. Audi says. Beyond that, “I think there is space" for a rugged SUV in AudiÂ’s passenger car lineup,  Lichte said. “There is potential because there are only two premium players” in this particular segment" (Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover) “and I think there is a space for a third one.” The upscale Defender was by far Land RoverÂ’s best-selling car last year, with 66,805 sold, and the G-Class set a new sales record the previous year with 41,174 moved worldwide. Audi obviously would like to capitalize on this popularity of the rugged 4x4 segment. The proposed competitor, said Lichte, “will not look like a G-Class and it will not look like a Defender, I can promise you. It will be something else."

Jaguar Land Rover seeks to block U.S. imports of Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, VW SUVs

Fri, Nov 20 2020

You wouldn’t know it was about Jags and Lambos, to judge by its rather dry name: In the Matter of Certain Vehicle Control Systems. But thatÂ’s the complaint Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc filed on Thursday to block U.S. imports of Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi and Volkswagen sport utility vehicles it says are using its patented Terrain Response technology without permission. Jaguar Land Rover, a British carmaker owned by IndiaÂ’s Tata Motors Ltd., said in its filing with the U.S. International Trade Commission that the technology helps negotiate a “broad range of surfaces” and is a key feature in JaguarÂ’s F-Pace and Land Rover Discovery vehicles. “JLR seeks to protect itself and its United States operations from companies that have injected infringing products into the U.S. market that incorporate, without any license from JLR, technology developed by JLR and protected by its patent,” JaguarÂ’s lawyer, Matthew Moore, said in the filing. Representatives of Volkswagen didnÂ’t immediately respond to emails seeking comment on the complaint. Jaguar wants to block imports of PorscheÂ’s Cayenne; LamborghiniÂ’s Urus; AudiÂ’s Q8, Q7, Q5, A6 Allroad and e-tron vehicles; and VWÂ’s Tiguan vehicles. It said there are plenty of other luxury midsize SUV and compact crossover vehicles to meet consumer demand if the SUVs are banned from the U.S. Still, the premium Porsche and Audi lines provide much of the profit VW is using to fund its investments in technology for electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles and further innovations. In addition to the four brands, Volkswagen Group owns other upscale nameplates, including Bentley and Bugatti. The International Trade Commission is an independent, quasi-judicial agency that investigates complaints of unfair trade practices, like patent infringement. It canÂ’t award damages but does have the power to block products from entering the U.S. Owners of patents and trade secrets like it because it can work faster than the federal district courts -- the typical investigation is completed in 15 to 18 months. But Jaguar also filed patent lawsuits against the companies in federal courts in Delaware and New Jersey, seeking cash compensation for the use of the technology. Those cases are likely to be put on hold once the trade commission launches its investigation. The case is In the Matter of Certain Vehicle Control Systems, 337-3508, U.S. International Trade Commission (Washington).

Aurora's Chris Urmson on autonomy — that's one way to avoid speeding tickets

Wed, Jan 17 2018

Although this year's CES was full of companies announcing and exhibiting their real and conceivable self-driving car technologies, while actual self-driving cars from Aptiv-Lyft were giving conventioneers 400 rides around town, the biggest news came when Volkswagen Group — and recognize this is the entire group, not just the brand — and Hyundai announced that they'd both partnered with Aurora Innovation. While the VW announcement was vague — "The collaboration brings the two companies together to realize self-driving electric vehicles in cities as Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) fleets" — Hyundai provided a concrete goal: "a strategic partnership to bring self-driving Hyundai vehicles to market by 2021." You may not have heard of Aurora, which has been described in some news accounts as "mysterious." But Aurora Innovation has been in business since December 2016, and it is to autonomous technology what the 1927 Yankees are to baseball. The three leaders of the company are Chris Urmson, co-founder and CEO, who had previously been chief technology officer for Alphabet Self-Driving Cars; Sterling Anderson, co-founder and chief product officer, who had directed the development of Tesla Autopilot; and Drew Bagnell, co-founder and chief technical officer, who had been autonomy architect and perception lead at the Uber Advanced Technology Center. We had the chance to sit down with Chris Urmson after he appeared onstage at a Hyundai press conference. He shared his insights on Aurora's approach to automated driving. Initial deployment of self-driving cars? "We think the first place this technology comes to market in in the transportation services or ride-hailing applications, but that's for our partners to decide." (Ride-sharing is a strategy a lot of players in the field are shooting for, as round-the-clock use is one way for paying for what will initially be a technology too costly for private ownership.) Transporting goods or people? "I personally — and as a company — am more excited initially about moving people around. Urban mobility. That's where you see the largest social impact. And it provides better access to mobility for people." Can you create a car that doesn't crash? "It is a fundamentally hard problem because other operators on the road can behave erratically at any moment. For example, if you are in a two-lane, opposing-traffic road, if you want to be safe, you don't drive there, ever.
