German automakers' stocks fall as EU investigates collusion
Mon, Jul 24 2017BERLIN/FRANKFURT - Volkswagen will hold a special supervisory board meeting on Wednesday to discuss allegations that German carmakers operated a wide-ranging cartel, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday. The European Commission said on Saturday antitrust regulators were investigating a possible German auto industry cartel following a tipoff. At stake is whether carmakers VW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes and BMW used German auto industry committees to discuss pricing of components and technologies, and whether such talks constituted anti-competitive behavior. A VW spokesman confirmed an extraordinary supervisory board meeting would be held on Wednesday but declined to give details. German auto stocks took a hit in early trading on Monday, weighed down by uncertainty over possible antitrust fines after European regulators said they were probing cartel allegations. VW shares were down 2.8 percent, with Daimler and BMW down 3.4 percent and 2.5 percent respectively, lagging the blue-chip DAX index, which was 0.7 percent lower. Exane BNP Paribas automotive analyst Stuart Pearson said little was known about the allegations, but no signs had emerged about fixing prices charged to consumers. "More ugly details could yet emerge, leaving German manufacturers - and the EU auto sector - still firmly in the sin bin for now," he added. The car industry has been hit with billion-euro fines on both sides of the Atlantic in recent years for cartels related to various parts such as lighting systems, engine coolers and bearings. The industry's record on exhaust emissions is also under close scrutiny after VW admitted in September 2015 to cheating U.S. diesel emissions tests and investigations have shown many vehicles exceeding pollution limits outside of testing labs. On Friday, German magazine Der Spiegel said VW, its Audi and Porsche brands, Mercedes-owner Daimler and BMW may have colluded to fix prices on components, including of diesel emissions treatment systems, using industry committees. Spiegel said the talks also led to the use of smaller tanks containing AdBlue, a urea-based liquid needed to help filter nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel emissions. Larger tanks would have been more expensive, the magazine said. Auto industry experts, however, have said the effectiveness of exhaust filtering systems does not depend on the size of an AdBlue Tank. BMW, for example, has equipped its cars with urea injection as well as a NOx-storage catalytic converter.
2nd annual Automobile Advertising of the Year Awards revealed
Tue, Jan 13 2015There was some absolutely fantastic auto advertising in 2014, ranging from funny to inspiring. Marking the best of it from the past year, the Second Annual One Show Automobile Advertising of the Year Awards were announced during the 2015 Detroit Auto Show (full disclosure: Autoblog was among the award's sponsors, and Editor-in-Chief Sharon Carty was a voter). Unlike previously, there were no brands with dominance over the list this time. Presented by The One Club, the awards have an international scope and hand out honors in a variety of categories. In the Broadcast TV group, there were three winners this year. First, there was The Scripted Life from Audi for the Q3 about breaking out of life's monotony. Also, Dad's Sixth Sense from Hyundai marketed the safety features in the Genesis. Finally, Unbreakable Drivers showed manly men being tested for the Toyota Hilux in Australia. The Online Video prize went to the fantastic The Epic Split spot from Volvo Trucks starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The best Interactive ad was the Honda video titled The Other Side for the Civic Type R, and the Experiential Advertising nod was for the Volkswagen Eyes on the Road clip that showed the dangers of texting and driving to a theater full of moviegoers in Hong Kong. Finally, the Public Choice Award went to the BMW commercial called Hello Future using the words of sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke for the i8. In the award not for videos, Jeep won the Print/Outdoor category for its Upside Down campaign. Check the ads out below, which show different animals when upside down. 2016 VW diesels are still 'months' out
Fri, Oct 9 2015Many 2016 model year vehicles are already for sale at dealers in the US but none of them have Volkswagen's 2.0-liter TDI. Don't expect to see the diesels on lots for several months either. The Environmental Protection Agency is preparing an onslaught of evaluations on the engine to make sure that it doesn't get fooled again, Automotive News reports. Before the new tests can even begin, VW must resubmit the 2016 diesels to the EPA, and the company isn't saying when that might be. The automaker took back the models' previous application after telling the EPA about an undisclosed software feature, according to Automotive News. There was absolutely no evidence that this was another defeat device, but the emissions agency wanted more information about what the tech's effect was. EPA boss Christopher Grundler has been quite clear about not disclosing any details about the new tests. He doesn't want to give automakers a chance to create more defeat devices, and the agency intends to evaluate diesels from other companies with more rigor, too. That process is already beginning in cases like subjecting the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax to on-road emissions checks. Once the 2016 VW models are certified, the EPA intends to run the same tests on the proposed repairs for the company's earlier diesels. That process could take months, as well, according to Automotive News. VW CEO Matthias Muller recently said that the first recalls likely wouldn't happen until January.
