Are more diesel scandals about to erupt?
Fri, Nov 20 2015More automakers may soon be embroiled, like Volkswagen, in diesel emissions scandals. According to the Daily Kanban, either the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) or the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) will soon announce from 10 to 15 more cases of automakers cheating national diesel emissions rules. The outlet says three of the incidents are attributed to Opel. Studies conducted by the DUH, the University of Applied Sciences in Bern, Switzerland, and the UK's Leeds University found that Opel's diesel Zafira, Corsa, and Vectra models emit more NOx than European regulations allow when tested in ways that go beyond the European testing protocol, such as when done on a four-wheel rolling road instead of a two-wheel rolling road. Opel said the accusations had no merit. Specifically on the Zafira, the DUH asked Opel about the emissions findings, and Opel said that no General Motors software contains any measures to enable cheating. Opel then tested a Zafira of its own "both on a two- and a four-wheel roller dynamometer," finding that "The emission behavior determined in each case does not differ from one another." That makes this a case of he-said-she-said for the moment. The Daily Kanban's sources say the cheating methods "range from the crude to the highly sophisticated," with those at the latter end complex enough to render Volkswagen's methods "pedestrian." As for any automakers who might be named, the matter of real-world emissions exceeding a legal limit doesn't mean a carmaker has designed systems that cheat, it might mean the company designed the car to pass a test. VW promises Passat facelift among 2016 changes
Wed, Aug 5 2015Volkswagen has got a whole raft of changes in store for the 2016 model year. Some of those changes are already known, but others are altogether new developments. The biggest news is that the German automaker will roll out a facelifted version of the Passat for 2016. The revised sedan, specific to the North American market, will adopt new sheetmetal, wheels, and lights at both ends. It will also receive a reworked interior with a more premium look and feel and a new instrument panel. It's set to arrive in the fall, with further details to "follow closer to launch." A number of trim-level adjustments are also being applied across the lineup. There'll be a new value-proposition Beetle 1.8T S model, a simplified array of trims for the rest of the Beetle and Tiguan lines, and new Trend and R-Line models for the CC. Lest you think it was finally gone, the Eos cabriolet is also sticking around for another model year in a limited capacity. In addition to these developments, VW is also rolling out a raft of new technologies across a wide variety of models. These include new infotainment features and safety systems, many of which launched on the new Touareg. As we recently reported, there's also a new version of the Jetta GLI, a new 1.4-liter turbo engine for other versions of the Jetta, and a more accessible version of the battery-powered e-Golf as well. Delve into the press release below for a full run-down of all the changes in store for Das Auto brand.
Piech and Winterkorn still at odds about VW leadership plan
Wed, Apr 15 2015Volkswagen Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech (above, right) and CEO Martin Winterkorn (above, left) will be meeting in the coming days to discuss who the next leader of the Volkswagen Group will be. This, of course, comes after a report last Friday in Der Spiegel where Piech said he didn't want Winterkorn to be the automaker's next chairman. Oh, to be a fly on the wall of that conference room. As Automotive News reports, Winterkorn had been widely viewed as the probable replacement for the 77-year-old Piech, until last week, when the current chairman said he was keeping the CEO "at a distance," in the German paper. While Winterkorn confirmed to German media on Monday that he still had a job, analysts aren't sure what Piech's comments will mean for the 67-year-old CEO's future, with some indicating he may end up being a "lame duck" leader. According to AN, Piech doesn't think that Winterkorn has the vision to lead the sprawling Volkswagen Group empire, even though the current CEO has the support of a number of other VAG stakeholders. "Piech knows what he is doing and will assume that he can get the supervisory board to implement his decisions," former BMW executive turned analyst Helmut Becker told German media, AN reports. Winterkorn has just over 18 months left on his contract, while Piech's term has another two years left on it, meaning it will still be some time before we find out how the Volkswagen Group's leadership issues play out.
