If you want the fastest TDI out there with better handling than a GTI, this is it.   60+ MPG Highway, 40+ around town.  I have several cars, and this has been one of my favorites: unstoppable torque, great handling, and the best gas mileage of anything I have ever owned.  But its time to make room.  There isn’t anything I would change about this car.  You can spend $ 35k+ to build your own, or  take this one home for a lot less.  The new common rail 2.0 is a great engine, but the stock intake and exhaust chokes these vehicles robbing them of power and efficiency.  So the week after I took delivery of it, I worked with Performance Diesel and Malone tuning to install the best breathing and best programmed system available.  Malone’s website lists 184 bhp and 333 lb-ft torque, and I don’t doubt it for a second.  In fact, the numbers for this car are probably better because of the custom stainless exhaust.  The fuel economy is better than stock by over 20% city and highway.  The sound is perfect.  Not loud, but throaty when full throttle.   And you can hear the turbo whistle a little at idle.  Its been a great daily driver and family trip car, no complaints whatsoever.  The tucked away hitch works great for a bicycle rack.  The other great thing about this car is the suspension and handling.  It has a full KWV2 coil-over and sway bar setup from ECS Tuning, so it handles better than any GTI could ever dream of – and gets 2X the gas mileage.  The height shown in the pictures is at the lowest setting possible, it can be adjusted about 3” higher if you want, and the shocks are adjustable too.  I have like new Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice snow tires mounted on 16” black steelies if you want them for $ 450.  All stock parts are included if you want to return the car to its original configuration.  Waxed and in a heated garage with owners manual, service history, both keys, etc.  Clear title.  Dealer serviced with synthetic oil only, suspension adjustment and alignment by independent VW shop.

Standard factory items:  Satellite radio, Bluetooth, heated seats, sunroof, rubber TDI mats, etc.

Volkswagen bringing production GTI Clubsport to Frankfurt

Wed, Sep 9 2015

"No plans for the car to be sold here." It's probably good I read that part of the email from Volkswagen before I looked at the photos and read the release for the car you see above. It's the production-spec GTI Clubsport. It's coming to the Frankfurt Motor Show. It's awesome. And I want one. I know, I'm kind of a GTI fanboy, but really, there's a lot to like here. The special-edition hot hatch is essentially a road-going version of the concept Volkswagen brought to Worthersee this year, complete with a more powerful engine. It produces 261 horsepower – a healthy increase over the 210 hp of the base GTI (or 220 if the car is fitted with the performance pack) – and can even crank out 286 hp for short bursts, thanks to an overboost function. Hitting 62 miles per hour takes six seconds flat with the six-speed manual gearbox, and that time is reduced to 5.9 seconds should you opt for the six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Even with these upgrades, VW says the GTI Clubsport will still return nearly 34 miles per gallon with the manual transmission. Volkswagen doesn't specifically mention any chassis upgrades, however. In its press release, VW simply says that the GTI Clubsport "has groundbreaking handling properties at high speeds and breathtaking cornering speeds." Cool. I'm sure it'll be a riot. A lot of the exterior is new: the front bumper, side sills, rear diffuser, roof spoiler, and aluminum wheels are all unique to the Clubsport. Buyers can choose between 18- or 19-inch rollers, the tailpipes are larger than those on a standard GTI, and the LED lights out back have a black/red, dark finish. Inside, the Clubsport comes with racing buckets covered in tartan fabric (of course) and there's Alcantara everywhere. Fellow GTI fans, get excited about this one – even if it's just another delicious piece of forbidden fruit. Still, I can't wait to see it live in Frankfurt next week. Which car should win 2015 World Green Car of the Year?

Wed, Apr 1 2015

There were three finalists for the World Green Car of the Year announced about a month ago at the Geneva Motor Show: the BMW i8, the Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-In Hybrid and the Volkswagen Golf GTE. With the New York Auto Show upon us and the winner scheduled to be announced tomorrow, we thought it's high time to ask our readers which one should win. There were seven other vehicles named to the finalists list: the Hyundai x35/Tucson Fuel Cell, the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine, the Audi A3 Sportback E-Tron, the BMW X5 xDrive40e, the Kia Soul EV, the Nissan e-NV200 and the Opel Adam 1.0 Direct Injection Turbo ecoFLEX Start. Would you have named one of these to the top three list instead? POLL 14386429 Green BMW Mercedes-Benz Volkswagen 2015 ny auto show world green car of the year vw golf gte

The not-Subaru crossover wagon | 2017 Volkswagen Alltrack First Drive

Fri, Sep 16 2016

Funnily enough, in light of dieselgate, Volkswagen is one of the few brands (along with Volvo and Subaru) to preserve the notion that you don't need a fuel-sucking SUV to meet your life-carrying needs. And, yes, VW's history of addressing off-road desires with all-wheel-drive dates to the mid-1980s with the Quantum Syncro (a.k.a. Passat) and Golf Country – the latter, sadly, never came stateside. The latest offering toward this effort is the 2017 Volkswagen Alltrack. What's an Alltrack? It's a slightly lifted, cladded, and butched-out version of the Golf Sportwagen (yes, formerly known as a Jetta). Not to steal Alltrack's thunder, but starting in 2017 you can also get the standard Sportwagen with 4Motion AWD, which is basically the same running gear for less money. The Alltrack starts at $26,950; the 4Motion Sportwagen starts at $24,930, both with the dual-clutch automatic available at launch. Any discussion of tall wagons brings Subaru immediately to mind, both with the Outback and the Impreza-based Crosstrek. The Volkswagen Alltrack sits between the two in size at 180.2 inches long – 5 more than the Crosstrek and 9.4 inches shorter than the Outback. The 2017 Subaru Outback starts at $25,645, and VW's comparisons focus on the Outback, which is understandable given the similar starting price. A bare-bones Crosstrek starts at $22,245, but quickly gets into Golf price overlap. The Alltrack and the 4Motion Golf Sportwagen are superior daily drivers to the Subaru, whether you're doing an emergency lane change or just trying to merge onto the interstate. Meanwhile, the Crosstrek doesn't have the refinement of the VW. Can we fault Subaru though? It's set a sales record every year in a row since 2010 and is looking at about triple the sales volume of VW's Golf for 2016. So we'll stick to telling you what we think of the Alltrack and let the dealers fight for your dollars. First thing's first. Yes, you can have the Golf Sportwagen and even the Alltrack with a manual six-speed gearbox. The seven-speed DSG automatic is very good, but it's worth noting that any manual gearbox is a rarity these days, especially when we're not talking about a two-seat sports car. You will have to wait until early 2017 for that option, but it also saves you $1,100 off both models. Second, the Alltrack and 4Motion Sportwagens get identical engines. Whether manual or DSG, VW's EA888 turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder is under the hood.
