Selling a 2001 VW GTI.  Black with black leather.  1.8 liter turbo motor, with automatic transmission.  This is the GLS model (mid level I believe).  It does have all of the power options, minus power seats.  Has the power glass sunroof, AC, power steering, ABS, airbags and all that good stuff.

The good:  timing belt was done at 115k miles.  At that time, water pump, tensioner and head gasket were replaced.  At 124k miles, the transmission was replaced with a very clean, used unit from a 68k mile car (I may still have the invoice for that somewhere).  Turbo was replaced at the same time with a used unit.  Interior is in overall good shape.  Leather is in good condition.  Exterior isn't bad either.  Car is overall clean.

The bad:  the car has a few bumps and bruises, normally associated with older cars like this one.  You can see in the pics that the glove compartment is broken (common among MK4 VW's), inside passenger door handle came off, interior trim tape is peeling (on the roof liner, by passenger window), and a dent on the left front fender where paint is cracking.  There is a leak (I believe coolant) at or around the turbo area.  We believe one of the hoses has a pin hole or something.  Leaves a little spot on the driveway sometimes.  We top off the coolant once every 2 weeks or so.  Also drips oil from the same general area sometimes, overnight.  Not a lot, but it does do it sometimes.  We think it may be one of the copper crush washers on one of the turbo oil lines.  Check engine light is on because secondary O2 sensor isn't in the exhaust pipe.  Needs to be screwed in and harness connector snapped on.  The check engine light is on for this issue only.  This may be done by the time the car is picked up.

Things that need to be addressed:  The water and oil leaks should be looked at, but the car does run and drive, and we do drive it to and from work.  The car is registered and insured, and we do use it.  The front control arm bushings may need to be replaced (another common issue with VW's).  The bushings are cheap.  We just haven't gotten around to doing them.  It also needs 1 tire.  I do have the 4th aluminum wheel, which will be included with the sale, but that tire is no good, hence the spare on the car.  Interior trim mentioned can use some love, but the car can be driven the way it is.

So here you have a car that can be running perfectly for a few bucks, or if you are a mechanic, can have this in top condition for next to nothing.

Not sure what else to write here.  The car is ready to go, with clear NJ title in hand.  Come with cash if you want, and drive it home the same day.  The car is at my sister's house, in Woodbridge, NJ.

Car is sold as-is (because they don't warranty 12 year old cars).  No reserve auction, and I put a buy it now on there as well.  Bid away, but use buy it now if you don't want to risk somebody buying this out from under you.

Thanks for looking!!

VW Golf GTD wagon makes us swoon ahead of Geneva reveal

Thu, Jan 29 2015

The European market is just crammed with power wagons we can't get our hands on: big ones like the Audi RS6 Avant and Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake, but also little ones like the new Mercedes CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake, Skoda Octavia RS and Seat Leon ST Cupra. Now there'll be one more, and as you might have guessed, it comes from the Volkswagen Group. At the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, VW will present the new Golf GTD Variant. And if you're wondering what it's all about, it's all right there in the name: those three letters tell us it's a performance diesel, and the Variant name tells us it's a wagon (which we'd more readily recognize as the SportWagen on this side of the Atlantic). So there you have it: a performance-oriented diesel wagon, but not one we're never likely to see on American roads. If you ever did see one up close, though, you'd find a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four under the hood with 181 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque – enough to send this nimble oil tanker to 62 in 7.9 seconds, all the while returning over 53 miles per gallon (on the lenient European cycle, anyway). Along with the engine, VW has thrown in other GTD performance-minded bits, including a sports suspension and progressive steering. Visual telltales include unique front and rear bumpers, grilles, 17-inch alloys, blacked-out roof rails, smoked taillight lenses and an interior with plaid sports seats, stainless steel pedals... the works. European buyers will be able to enjoy all this and more while hauling all their stuff down the Autobahn, passing gas station after gas station in oil-burning bliss. World premiere of the new Golf GTD Variant - The perfect all-round package: sporty, economical, comfortable and spacious - Launch set for Geneva Motor Show Since 1982 Volkswagen's GTD logo has stood for Gran Turismo Diesel, with its promise of sporty yet economical motoring. Now for the first time, the GTD initials grace the Golf Variant, which like the Golf GTD, boasts the 184 PS (135 kW) TDI engine. The new Golf GTD Variant is set for its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, and is available to order as of now at a price of 31,975 euros. The Golf GTD Variant* is excellently placed to establish itself as an iconic long-distance cruiser.

Volkswagen hatches hotter GTI in Geneva

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't even launched here in the United States, but over in Geneva, we're already getting our first glimpse at the hotter GTI hatchback. The fancy new Mk VII Golf is already off to a healthy start with positive reviews in Europe, and we have no doubt that this next GTI will work hard to regain its title as king of the hot hatches.
The big news for this generation of GTI is that for the first time ever, Volkswagen is actually offering two different power grades for the model, both relying on the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. Standard cars pack 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but an optional performance pack ups the horsepower number to 230. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes 6.5 seconds (6.4 with the performance pack) and top speed is quoted at 153 mph (or 155 with the performance kit). Volkswagen will continue to offer the GTI with both six-speed manual and dual-clutch transmissions.
On the visual front, the sub-3,000-pound GTI adds the usual bit of hot hatch aggression over the standard Golf, and those changes carry over to the interior with a flat-bottomed wheel and, of course, plaid seats. She's certainly a looker, and while some of us do find the new Golf's design to be a bit staid and evolutionary, the enhancements for the GTI indeed tug on our enthusiast heart strings.

Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show

Mon, 05 Mar 2012

The Volkswagen Group is comprised of 11 brands producing 240 vehicles across 49 factories throughout the world. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.
To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. We'll be delving into the details of each over the next two days of show coverage, but before that happens, you can read all about what we saw tonight from the cheap seats after the break.
