Your Bidding on a Early '69 Poptop Westfalia Walk Through Camper

This particular bus left the factory on Jan. 21, 1969 and was sold through San Francisco here in Northern California.

Original Owners Manual and Camping Manual  say that it was sold New in San Jose at  " Bob Himsl " on March 21, 1969, it also has Original Plastic sleeve that both manuals slip in from this same Dealer .

The bus is pretty complete with most of it's Original camper interior and is Rock Solid .   The only visible signs of rust are around battery tray (Common) and a very small spot on driver front floor. There are some very small bubbles on passenger side windshield.  Underneath is very nice looking along with rockers, doglegs, jack supports, nose, etc.

The bus has been Off the road for the last few years, but recently was put back on the road.  It has California current registration and according to receipts had a New Engine less then 1600 miles back at 18481, current milage now is 20007  .   The Engine receipt is dated April of 2003 for a total cost of $ 1756.31.   It is a brand new case and is blank along with new heads.

The bus sports it's Original California black plates that it started life out with back in March of '69.  This is truely rare these days, and '69 is the last year for black plates in our state.

The bus is pretty straight but does have a few battle scars from a combination of bad drivers, both rear corners have some dents as visable in pics. also a small one up front.

Some of the interor wood should be replaced, as well as it needs a new poptop seal. Both front seats need new seat covers. Previous owner put some white rattle can on front floors the day before I bought it, this should come off with some lacquer thinner.

The bus has it's original mosquito net ,rear netting and childs cot, all rear upholstry seems to be Original.

The bus does run and drive as I have said earlier but it does need a small mechanical service on brakes, and all usual things needed when making a car a daily driver again.

The bus is really a good one for someone to restore or make it there weekend warrior. Extremley tough to find a early Bay Westy like this anymore and a true california black plate bus from new .

Also the bus comes with it's " Birth Certificate " from Volkswagen in Germany showing how it started out life.

I have a link to over 100 pics if anyone wants to see detailed pics

Shipping to Europe is not a problem, I have a shipper and the Port of Oakland is only 45 minutes away.

* I have a correct Westfalia tent from this vintage in my private stock, the winner of the auction has the oppertunity to buy it for an additonal cost.

Volkswagen pushed back against Takata airbag recall

Mon, Feb 15 2016

Volkswagen and Audi will recall about 850,000 vehicles in the US to replace their Takata-supplied driver side airbag inflators, but the automaker doesn't believe the safety campaign is entirely necessary. In a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company pushes the agency to re-evaluate the recall's scope because the parts are allegedly safe, it claims. VW asserted in the letter, which NHTSA posted online (as a PDF) with other documents about the company's safety campaign, that the vast majority of the automaker's recalled vehicles used Takata inflators from the supplier's factory in Freiburg, Germany. Only the US-built Passat had components from Takata's plant in Mexico. VW's argues to NHTSA that its recall is unnecessary because there are no reported airbag ruptures in the German-made parts, and the plant has better quality control than Takata's factories in the US and Mexico. In addition, the Mexico-manufactured components in the Passat are also allegedly safe because they come from a time after significant upgrades to the plant to address humidity and welding concerns. "We do not believe the facts known to date support the scope as defined in the Takata defect notification," VW's letter says. To be clear, VW is not refusing the Takata recall and plans to fix the affected vehicles. Instead, this letter shows the automaker expressing an opinion that NHTSA's scope for the campaign is too broad. VW now plans to do its own analysis on the inflators to strengthen that case, according to The Detroit News. "We respectfully request that, should such results be shown, the agency work with Volkswagen and other manufacturers to revisit the scope of these recalls," the letter said. Takata's recalled inflators use ammonium nitrate as a propellant, and experts believe that long-term exposure to high humidity can make the chemical more likely to cause a rupture during airbag deployment. The spray of metal shrapnel from the exploding parts has links to at least 10 deaths. Related Video:

Watch the VW E-Golf get made

Fri, Jun 13 2014

If you've ever been on a tour of an automotive factory, you know how mesmerizing it can be to see humans and robots work together to build our four-wheeled friends. The swift automation, the cleanliness, the trained hands deftly fitting pieces together and watchful eyes inspecting every piece of the car, it's all quite impressive, especially if the vehicle is one you, as an observer, are fond of. Even just seeing a fresh, gleaming badge being applied to immaculately painted sheet metal is enough to curl ones toes. Such is the case with this video from of the E-Golf being pieced together in the Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant. There's no narration or music - just the sounds of production - so it's easy to follow the singular motions that go into the process without distraction, with a slight sense of actually being on the floor. This solo video is only seven minutes long, so it's not quite the epic that was the BMW i3 production series. Therefore, we miss a lot of the initial build, such as pressing the sheet metal, painting, and putting together a lot of the inner workings. What is refreshing to see is how much of the final touches of the electric Golf are done by hand using actual hand tools (and with typical German efficiency). There's even a person riding a bicycle through the factory at one point, which is common at Wolfsburg and also rather quaint. Enjoy the video below, and if you have a suggestion for a good soundtrack to go along with it, sound off in the comments. This content is hosted by a third party. Recharge Wrap-up: Smart Ready for Rent, MOIA comes to US in 2018

Mon, Dec 12 2016

Daimler is launching its "Smart Ready to Rent" service in Europe. Beginning this month in German and French cities, the rental scheme bridges the gap between short-term Car2go rentals and longer leases. Customers book the Smart model of their choice – including the emissions-free Electric Drive and the hotter Brabus versions – for a period of one day up to three months. As such, Smart Ready to Rent is useful to those who live outside of an urban center. Users can book a car online or through a dealer, and vehicles are collected and returned at the dealership. Read more at Green Car Congress. Volkswagen will launch its MOIA mobility arm in the US in 2018. The recently announced brand will take on public transportation as a competitor with services such as ride hailing and car sharing. VW is looking into forging partnerships with the likes of technology and ride sharing companies. The automaker also expects to show an electric shuttle-type concept in 2017 for pooling services, but will use the three-row VW Atlas crossover in the meantime until that concept reaches production. Look to see MOIA emerging in major cities along the US coasts. Read more at Automotive News. A new report from Lux Research suggests that most EV batteries are better off being recycled than reused. Once lithium-ion batteries have outlived their usefulness for automotive duty, some automakers (BMW, Nissan, and Toyota included) are looking at ways to use their remaining capacity, such as for stationary energy storage. The new report, though, says that reusing batteries offers "questionable returns on account of reduced performance." Better to be like Tesla, and just recycle them. Read more at Hybrid Cars.
