THIS IS AN ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS CAMPER BUS! THIS BUS HAS RECEIVED THE RED CARPET TREATMENT REQUIRING COUNTLESS MAN HOURS, BEGENING WITH THE DISMANTLING OF A VERY STRAIGHT, RUST FREE ORIGINAL PAINT WESTFALIA. THIS WAS NOT A RUST BUCKET THAT HAD TO BE CUT UP AND PATCHED BACK TOGETHER, RATHER A VERY NICE SURVIVOR THAT NEEDED A REFRESH AFTER A 10 YEAR COVERED STORAGE. WE BEGAN BY DISMANTLING THE BUS DOWN TO IT’S BARE SHELL. ALL WINDOWS WERE REMOVED; ALL LIGHTS AND TRIM, THE ROOF, ROOF RACK AND CANVAS TENT ALL CAME OFF, ALL HANDLES AND HARDWARE ALONG WITH ALL DOOR RUBBER SEALS ECT. IT WAS THEN PROFESSIONALLY PREPED AND PAINTED IN A BEAUTFUL VINTAGE GREEN WITH A NICE CLEAN WHITE FOR TOP AND ACCENTS. THE PAINT WAS LAYED ON THICK AND THEN BUFFED TO AN AMAZING SMOOTH FINISH. THE VDUB CLASSICS UPHOLSTERY DESIGN WAS CUSTOM MADE FOR THIS BUS AND LOOKS FANTASTIC! THE ORIGINAL PANNELING AND WESTFALIA CABINETS HAD BEEN INCREDIBLY WELL PRESERVED AND REQUIRED LITTLE RESTORATION, EVEN THE ICE BOX IS STILL IN GREAT SHAPE AND VERY USABLE. THE FLOOR NEEDED REPLACING AND SO WE INSTALLED OUR VDUB CLASSICS ONE PIECE BALTIC BIRCH FLOOR PANNEL WITH MULTIPLE COATS OF URETHANE FINISH FOR A DURABLE EASY TO CLEAN SURFACE. THE CURTAINS WERE HAND MADE AND MATCHED SPECIFICLY FOR THIS BUS AND NEW CARPET WAS INSTALLED OVER SOUND DEADENING UNDERLAYMENT ALONG WITH NEW RUBBER SEAT PEDESTAL MATS. AFTER PAINT, WE METICULOUSLY REASSEMBLED THE BUS WITH ALL NEW WINDOW RUBBER, TRIM AND WINDOW CHANNEL FELT. ALL DOORS AND HATCHES RECEIVED NEW GERMAN RUBBER SEALS FOR A NICE QUIET WEATHERPROOF RIDE. ALL LIGHT LENSES WERE REPLACED WITH NEW. BRAND NEW CHROME BUMPERS WERE INSTALLED ALONG WITH NEW CHROME TRIM FOR LIGHTS AND FRONT EMBLEM. ALL NEW RUBBER SEALE ON ROOF AND ROOF RACK ALONG WITH NEW CANVAS TENT. This classic VW bus packs Porsche power
Thu, May 14 2015Appearances can be deceiving. The rolling embodiments of that principal we call "sleeper cars": ordinary-looking vehicles that pack a much bigger punch than you'd get by just looking at them. Take this classic VW bus, for example. Sure, it may have some racing graphics and upgraded rolling stock to tell you this isn't just any old van, but looking at it, you'd still have no idea what lies beneath the surface. That's where you'll find oily bits sourced from Porsches. And not from a 914, either. (That was as much a Volkswagen as it was a Porsche anyway.) No, this vintage 1962 VW T1 "Bulli" van packs the air-cooled, forced-induction flat-six from a 993 Turbo, driving 530 horsepower and 558 pound-feet of torque through the six-speed manual transmission from a 996 GT3 to 18-inch BBS alloys. It's the obsessive six-year project of Swiss customizer Fred Bernhard, who also used carbon fiber to cut the curb weight down to 3,300 pounds. The resulting light sleeper can top out at 143 miles per hour, in a vehicle with the aerodynamic profile of, well, a bus. It's called the T1 Race Taxi and is being showcased by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles at the GTI-Treffen at Worthersee this year. Short of maybe the Renault Espace F1 concept, we can hardly imagine any other van we'd rather drive around the Nordschleife. Or just to pick up the kids from school.
Trump turns his unpredictable ire towards German carmakers
Mon, Jan 16 2017President-elect Donald Trump likes to be unpredictable. During the election, he used the phrase in reference to foreign policy and dealing with terrorism. But he's using the same tactic with the automotive industry, making broad statements that send manufacturers into emergency-response mode. The latest salvo comes from an interview with Germany's Bild, where Trump threatened a 35-percent import tax on German manufacturers. ( Reuters covers the highlights in English here.) "If you want to build cars in the world, then I wish you all the best. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay 35 percent tax," Trump said. Trump's comments seem to be directed at manufacturing in Mexico, although it's unclear if the comments refer to any import from a German automaker or just those from south of the border. BMW is building a $1-billion plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, where it plans to assemble the 3 Series. Mercedes-Benz is joining up with Nissan to build a new facility in Aguascalientes near the Japanese company's existing factory. And Volkswagen recently expanded its massive footprint in Puebla to build the new Tiguan as well as a separate factory for the Audi Q5. Reuters states that Trump thinks there's not enough reciprocity between Germany and the United States, as Germans don't buy Chevrolets at the rate American buy Mercedes-Benz Vehicles. At present, only the Corvette and Camaro are sold in Germany. The German subsidiary of Chevrolet parent General Motors, Opel, is the fifth-ranked automaker in the European Union, ahead of FCA but trailing Ford, VW, and both French auto companies. In response to Trump, Germany's deputy chancellor (Chancellor Angela Merkel is shown above) and minister for the economy, Sigmar Gabriel, did not mince words. As reported by The Guardian, Gabriel said "The US car industry would have a bad awakening if all the supply parts that aren't being built in the US were to suddenly come with a 35% tariff. I believe it would make the US car industry weaker, worse and above all more expensive." Asked what it would take for Germans to buy more American vehicles, he said "Build better cars." Gabiel also noted that BMW's largest plant is already in the US. The Spartanburg, SC plant exports about 65 percent of its 400,000-unit annual production to foreign markets and directly employs 8,000 workers according to BMW.
Cost-cutting measures put VW Beetle in jeopardy
Tue, Mar 10 2015Volkswagen is on a mission to cut costs. That means producing more models across its various brands based on the same platforms and powertrains, but the latest word from Germany has it that it will also mean cutting some of the VW brand's less successful models. First on the chopping block, according to German publication Der Spiegel, is the three-door version of the Polo, which will reportedly cede its place to the five-door version exclusively. The elimination of that model alone is said to save VW a good 200 million euros, putting it on its way towards reducing the brand's costs by a targeted five billion euros. The Polo isn't the only one in danger, though. The Eos, as we know, is not due to be replaced, but the future of the Beetle could be in jeopardy as well. The Beetle may be one of VW's most iconic models, but is hardly its most successful in terms of sales. With the 2014 annual report due to be released shortly, the last full-year sales figures had Volkswagen selling 109,517 Beetles in 2013. That may be more than four times the number of Scirocco models it sold, but hardly puts a dent in the 871,413 Jettas, 824,629 Golfs and 725,291 Polos it sold during the same year.
