At auction is a 78 VW bus that turns heads wherever it goes with its beautiful red and white color combination. You’ll love the attention you get and you’ll have no problems keeping up with traffic with the newly rebuilt 2.0L engine. On the inside, “Rojo” has been fitted a Westfalia Z bed / bench seat and many of the OM cabinets that come original with the earlier (and preferable) Westy transporters. I’ve gone through this bus mechanically from top to bottom and it pains me greatly that I can’t be the one who totally completes this restoration.
The bus is running like a champ, will cruise at 70 or higher with no problem whatsoever. I was forced into replacing the Fuel Injection (FI) with a carburetor and now that I’ve installed the correct distributor, this thing flies. The engine has less than 2,000 miles on it, the bus steers and brakes perfect, the transmission is solid, and I had almost all of the electronics working until very recently, the fuel gauge has begun to behave erratically.
The cab dome lights, dash lights, parking lights, the horn, reverse lights, oil temperature gauge, brights and bright indicator - they all work. There’s an electric fan installed to move heated air into the cabin with a 3 stage variable flow switch placed in the dash, but still needs heater boxes added to complete the heater restoration. The inside looks very good with interior panels less than a year old, reupholstered seats and rear bench, extra touches like a hand sewn Wheelskin steering wheel cover, newer 4 speaker stereo with Pandora capability and more. It’s got a center console for storage, arm rest, cup holder and serves the overall need for somewhere to put your “stuff”. The bus has had all new door seals and just had all of the window seals replaced along with new vent wing window assemblies (all 5) to complete the overall sealing of the vehicle. Beyond all that, here’s (a partial) list of additional work completed on the bus in November, 2012:
Additional Info and Disclosure: There’s some rust here and there on the vehicle but really not that much at all. While I had everything resealed (windows and doors), it’s still not completely water tight (but very close) and there’s just a lot to be said for new rubber. The passenger side window is “sticky” and difficult to roll up and/or down and could potentially break the crank if not resolved. Also be aware, these vehicles tend to be fairly loud when getting to cruising speed and there are a couple of hums and vibrations that I just haven’t been able to eliminate (because I haven’t tried!). The transmission shifts fine and holds all the gears but it takes a little for the uninitiated to get the feel; finding reverse might take a bit for those who didn’t drive VW’s back in the day – but it works fine. The paint is OK and looks great from a distance but there are some pretty clear imperfections when getting up close. Also, the center console has not been “permanently” mounted (currently wedged with foam) but it’s VERY useful and shouldn’t take anything to mount. It’s very convenient to remove the console when working in the bus and moving from cab to cabin. All in all, Rojo is a blast to drive and you’ll love how you feel when you drive it.
I’m happy to provide additional info upon request and will assist with coordination of shipping, but buyer covers all shipping costs. This is the first thing I’ve ever sold on e-Bay but I’m typically responsive and very honest. Happy bidding and season’s greetings! |

10 automakers sued over keyless ignitions
Thu, Aug 27 2015Keyless ignition has rapidly proliferated throughout the auto industry to become a fairly normal feature on new cars. It's supposed to offer the convenience of keeping the fob in your pocket and just pressing a button to drive away. However, ten major automakers are now being sued in US District Court over claims that the system is dangerous, Reuters reports. The suit alleges that people are forgetting to shut off the engine, and the lack of an idle timer is the cause for 13 deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning and multiple injuries. The suit currently includes 28 plaintiffs, according to Reuters, but the lawyers are asking for class-action status to potentially add many more. The case goes after a major swath of the industry, including BMW, Daimler, FCA, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen, plus their related brands like Acura, Infiniti, Mini, and Lexus. In all, over five million vehicles are affected. The assertion here is that people walk away from their vehicle without shutting it off because they believe the engine shuts off automatically. If parked in a garage, carbon monoxide can build up, leading to poisoning. The lawyers claim automakers know this is a problem and also cite 27 complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the issue, according to Reuters. The plaintiffs are asking for an automatic shut-off and damages from the companies. These concerns have come up before, though. Toyota previously faced a lawsuit over a carbon monoxide death after a woman accidentally left her Lexus running. Also earlier this year, GM recalled 64,186 examples of the 2011-2013 Chevrolet Volt because owners weren't shutting them off. The problem resulted in two injuries, and the company released a software update to limit the idling time.
2020 Virtual Geneva Motor Show Editors' Picks
Fri, Mar 6 2020There may not have been an actual Geneva Motor Show this year, but there were still loads of car reveals that happened the week that the show would have happened. So we still wanted to highlight what our favorites of the would-be show. Our list of cars seemed to match the theme of the reveals, too, highlighting over-the-top supercars and forward thinking electric vehicles. Scroll down to see our favorites. Fifth Place: Aston Martin V12 Speedster - 21 points Managing Editor, Greg Rasa: Astons are works of art, and this one's ready for the Louvre. The design nods to Aston history are nifty. It looks like a jet fighter, except those have canopies. Not sure what 186 mph would be like in this, but don't try it in summer when there are bugs. Contributing Editor, Joe Lorio: Admittedly, this one is a little silly. A $950,000 sports car with no roof? A 700-hp two-seater with no windshield? But the offerings at the Geneva auto show have always tilted toward absurdity, and Aston’s V12 Speedster is endearingly outrageous as a fighter plane for the street. Third Place (Tie): Volkswagen ID.4 - 26 points Senior Producer, Chris McGraw: I don't have much to say about this other than I am a huge fan of more EVs coming to the market, which is why two-thirds of my picks are electric, including the ID.4. Producer, Alex Malberg: Any new fully-electric crossover is a vote for me. The fact it doesn't look terrible and VW will be including AWD later are bonuses. Third Place (Tie): Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio GTA - 26 points Road Test Editor, Zac Palmer: Hard to argue with the logic of this one. The Giulia Quadrifoglio is already the best driver in this class of hot sedans, so why not extend the lead with a special model. That wing is Type R levels of high, and I completely approve. Associate Editor, Byron Hurd: Love this car. Love it, love it, love it. It's beautiful, aggressive and fast. I'd take it over an M3 or C63 any day. As cool as the GTAm is, though, I'd rather stick to the four-seat GTA. Something about a four-door car with two seats just doesn't really work for me. I haven't alienated ALL of my friends quite yet. Second Place: Hyundai Prophecy - 35 points Senior Editor, Green, John Snyder: I get whiffs of the Genesis Coupe from this sleek concept. I like the focus on form, with interesting details to discover if you look for them. West Coast Editor, James Riswick: Does it look like a Porsche? Sure, but Porsches look neat.
Volkswagen Golf Variant will make a lovely Jetta SportWagen
Tue, 05 Mar 2013In addition to several other versions of the Golf, Volkswagen is debuting the new Golf Variant (read: wagon) here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. And if this bigger version of the Golf looks like it might fit right at home in the States, it's because we could possibly see some version of this car as the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here on our shores.
Volkswagen is debuting the Golf Variant with two efficient diesel engines, rated at 110 and 150 horsepower, the smaller of which is good for an impressive 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle (when mated to a six-speed manual transmission). The Golf Variant also gets a version of Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, making it incredibly all-weather capable.
It's a handsome estate, and it wears the new Golf's design language well. We can't say for sure if this car will actually make its way Stateside, but given the fact that the current Jetta SportWagen still rides on the old Golf platform, the odds look to be in our favor.
