There are a few small dings/scratches, a little oxidization on the paint but no rust. Interior is in fair condition. Some staining on front floorboard carpet, Power Window switches need repair and a small hole on driver's seat, upholstery on cushions in both sleeper berths are in great shape. On April12,2013 I had this vehicle inspected by my local shop and they compiled a list of mechanical issues that need attention. It needs a complete tune-up. Belts (including AC belt) need to be replaced. Brake master and front brake hoses are leaking. Power Steering pressure switch is leaking and Power Steering hoses are leaking at crimps. Shocks need to be replaced. Engine mounts are broken. Transmission output shaft is leaking. I recognize that there is a significant amount of work required to upgrade this vehicle's condition, and that is reflected in the deep discount of the sale price."

An Excellent Platform for Restoration!

Thank you for your interest in this 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia.  We purchased this vehicle from Pop Top Heaven (Yucaipa, CA location) in March 2005.  It features two sleeper berths, a stove, sink, and refrigerator. Of course, there is ample cabinet space for everything you'll want to have close at hand.  As you may know by now, this vehicle was specifically designed and built in Germany to be the ultimate road-trip machine.  I'm happy to place this example of that achievement on auction for your consideration.  I will make every effort to disclose any issues that I am aware of with the vehicle, and I am willing to answer questions or to provide additional photos for serious buyers.  However, if you are not interested making the investment to restore this Westy, it may not be the vehicle for you.

Although it will start, run, and drive, I cannot honestly recommend using this vehicle for any road-trip (or as a daily driver) upon delivery.  It has a number of mechanical issues that should be addressed prior to prolonged use.  Some of these repairs can be made by any auto shop, or by a competent driveway mechanic, but some issues may require the expertise of an auto shop that specializes in European imports.  If you are not able to make the repairs yourself, I would suggest asking around to line up a shop to do it for you before bidding. If you are up to the challenge of reconditioning this vehicle, you will have more than just a car to take you places...

You will have a car to experience places.

Please consider the following before bidding.

This vehicle starts and runs but needs a lot of TLC.  The body is in good condition. There are a few small dings/scratches, some oxidization on the paint but no rust.  Interior is in fair condition.  There is some staining on front floorboard carpet. The Power Window switches need repair and there is a small hole on driver's seat.  The upholstery on cushions in both sleeper berths are in great shape.  The tenting of the pop top has a tear in it.

If you believe that you are the right person, I invite you to place a bid now.  You just might be surprised by the LOW RESERVE price!

I will provide the original factory manuals, and can provide all vehicle maintenance and repair documentation since 2005 if requested.

Delivery arrangements are the sole responsibility of the buyer.  I will make every effort to facilitate the transfer of the vehicle to the buyer or an auto courier service acting on behalf of the buyer.

German prosecutors have recorded calls between VW bigwigs talking dieselgate

Thu, Mar 21 2019

It's barely possible to believe how poorly Volkswagen continues to handle dieselgate. Depending on which day you catch the news, the German carmaker embodies the corporate venality of "Michael Clayton," the comic blundering of the Coen Brothers' "Burn After Reading," and the every-man-for-himself vengeance of "Reservoir Dogs." Today is Tarantino day, with news that German prosecutors have recordings of phone calls between former Audi and Porsche development boss Wolfgang Hatz, ex-Volkswagen Group executive Matthias Muller, and current Porsche executives Oliver Blume and Michael Steiner. Hatz made the calls to the trio in November 2015, two months after Volkswagen admitted its diesel-particulate sins to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Hatz was still employed at the time, and in his company car. Who recorded the calls? His wife. Hatz and his missus apparently saw the storm coming and started stacking defenses early. Hatz's wife, who can be heard encouraging Hatz during at least one call, sent the recordings to Hatz's attorney from her mobile phone. According to a Google translation of the German newspaper Handelsblatt's report, she included the note, "Here is a very long, but quite informative conversation on the current situation with useful formulations." The report in Handelsblatt said that in Germany it is generally "not allowed" to record a conversation and pass it on to a third party. We don't know how the authorities will handle this matter, since prosecutors found the recordings in e-mail attachments on Mrs. Hatz's mobile phone. Remember, when the diesel scandal broke, VW spent months saying that only a small number of low-level personnel were behind it, and all of the higher-ups had been blindsided. Ex-CEO Martin Winterkorn claimed to be "stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group." Winterkorn successor Matthias Muller said, "according to current information, a few developers interfered in the engine management." Former VW USA honcho Michael Horn told a congressional committee that "a couple of software engineers" programmed the software for reasons no one could understand. In the recorded conversations, Hatz apparently called Muller to find out how VW planned to treat him.

Audi's CEO might not have known of VW emissions scheme

Tue, Sep 27 2016

There's been no shortage of finger-pointing when it comes to finding people to blame for the Volkswagen diesel-emissions scandal that broke last September. One rather powerful executive, however, appears to have escaped blame. That would be Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, whose company sold about 85,000 diesel vehicles with emissions-cheating software, Reuters says, citing people familiar with the process. US law firm Jones Day questioned executives at both VW and its Audi unit and has found no evidence that Stadler was complicit with the plan, which involved programming Volkswagen-made diesel engines to produce artificially low emissions when the vehicle was being smog-tested. In Audi's case, the engine type in question was the 3.0-liter V6 diesel. Officials with both VW and its Audi unit declined to comment, according to Reuters. That engine was used for the Audi A6, A7, A8, Q5, and Q7 since the 2009 model year, in addition to the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. Audi also sold the VW Group 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the A3 from 2010 to 2013 and 2015. VW has reached an agreement with US regulators concerning that engine, which is also not connected to Stadler. Last month, German newspaper Bild am Sonntag published specifics on how the 3.0-liter diesel cheated the emissions-testing process, including records that the motor was programmed to shut of its emissions-control equipment after 22 minutes of running, or about two minutes longer than typical emissions-compliance testing. Audi said last November that it would work on a software update for the V6's emissions-control system that would be submitted to both the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but the VW unit hasn't reached any settlement with US regulators implying that a solution was agreed upon. Volkswagen's settlement with the EPA will cost Europe's largest automaker as much as $15 billion in the form of buybacks, lease buyouts, vehicle repairs, and investments in zero-emissions technology. VW sold about a half-million vehicles in the US that contained the so-called "cheat" software. Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept still makes us swoon

Fri, Nov 21 2014

We know, we know – this hot little guy isn't really new or anything. Volkswagen first rolled out the Golf R 400 concept in Beijing earlier this year, and since its debut, we've heard rumors that the German automaker might-perhaps-maybe-hopefully build the thing. Its showing here in Los Angeles simply marks the first time it's debuting in America, and honestly, we can't get enough. So here it is, again. Hello, Golf R 400 – we love you. And what's not to love? What starts as a normal Golf R gets better with a more aggressive appearance, big wheels, some tasteful neon yellow accents, and a whole mess of power. The original concept packed 395 horsepower from an overblown 2.0-liter turbo-four, though the most recent reports suggest a production version could produce over 400 hp. To keep it all in line, the concept has all-wheel drive. And inside, it's the same functional, comfortable Golf we've always loved. There's nothing left to say, really. We love this car, and you should, too. Check it out in the gallery above.
