1987 Westfalia GL. 4 cylinder, 2.1 liter water cooled engine. 142,584 miles on the body, with the motor rebuilt approx 35,000 miles ago.  I purchased this VW in Sept '07 off ebay and have personally put 23,465 miles on it.  The VW was never used as my daily driver but used for short road trips; camping and sporting tailgate activities.  This is a wonderful, "ready to ride" Westfalia with the complete original camping package.  I have added a few major items since I purchased it including new heavy duty bumpers, a "Shady Boy" awning, hardwood floors, an inverter, new carpet and many other items which I will describe below.  All general maintenance has been performed and the overall vehicle is solid for its age.  I am not an expert in the mechanics of automobiles but will try to answer any questions one may have which isn't addressed below or shown in the images.  I am available night/day for anyone wishing to view in person or test drive "Rose".

** I have included a scanned image of the autocheck on the vehicle which the previous owner included when he listed it on ebay. **

EXTERIOR:  Body and paint is in good shape. There are a few minor dings here and there.  There is a noticable dent below the rear window, causing the wiper to not work. There is also a significant, foot long crimp on the trim above the back left tire where the only noticable rust appears.  The front white paint is slightly different than the balance of the vehicle.  The windows are dent/crack free. One headlight lense is cracked.  The beefy bumpers are metal tubed with diamond plate accent, including a rear trailer hitch.  The high power headlight kit has been added as have fog lamps. The outside connections for water (hose included), electricity (x-long cord and adapters included), and the propane connections are in working order.  The windows have been deep tinted, giving excellent privacy and a sharp visual appearance. The Hankook 8 ply tires are very good with less than 25,000 miles.  I have replaced all trim moldings, installed new poptop seals and added wind/rain window deflectors.  I have recently installed new rear hatch struts so the hatch stays up great. The radio antenna works great but probably should be replaced as it is hanging on (I have the replacement).  The roof, including luggage department are excellent shape.  The sunroof works but does leak in extreme rain but is an inexpensive replacement.  Overall for an almost 30 year old vehicle I would say the exterior to be very good.  Note: I have a never used custom fitted vehicle cover and a new set of wheel rims if you wish to replace to the pained red ones on it now, I will include these.

INTERIOR: New carpet kit has been installed. Laminate wood floor has been laid down in the rear floor.  All upholstery is original and in really good shape.  The dash is crack free and in great shape. The headliner is in great shape. The power locks work great however the power windows are hit or miss.  The front door panels although in good shape do have some warping. The upper bunk pad is in excellent shape as is the lower seat/bed.  I have installed custom curtains.  Many of the bulbs, the dash bulbs and the rear light are all LED. The water storage tank, pump and sink are excellent. The refrigerator does work on electricity and propane however I only used the fridge for storage. The 2 burner stove works great.  The VW has the 2nd deep cycle battery and charges as the motor is on. I have "dry camped" for as many as 8 days utilizing inverter off the deep cycle battery only for water pump, and phone charging, radio, etc. The popup tent is original and is in good shape with only the screen having rips (replacement kits are available). I had a new air conditioner system installed in 2007 and it keeps the rear passengers cool.  I have the original front snap-in privacy curtain and also the rear snap-in screened curtain.  There is a cd/radio player installed as well an amp located behind the driver seat.  All cabinet doors, and the table are in perfect condition. The deep cycle marine battery indicator light works perfectly.  A console in front has been installed.  The rear swing out table is in great shape.

MECHANICALLY:  The previous owner spent $3200.00 at 112,000 miles having the motor rebuilt (there is a scanned image of the invoice/work). I believe I have only replaced the water pump about 12,000 miles ago, possibly some belts on the motor. The motor runs great. The alignment is great with no pull.  I average 18-20 MPG and even when fully loaded with a tank of water I can cruise comfortably at 70 mph on interstate.  The transmission runs good but it does need the seals replaced.  I haven't had the time to replace, but I do have the kit which is included. The transmission fluid does and will leak until replaced, otherwise it still runs smooth.  I have what is to believed to be all maint. records from when the VW was purchased and will turn these over to the buyer.

This has been a great vehicle for myself and my once lifestyle.  I just don't have the time anymore to head out on long camping weekends. I have probably put less than 100 miles on it over the past 12 months.  As I stated, this is ready to ride and enjoy now for the weekend enthusiast but some simple, inexpensive fixes would make it truly worry-free as a daily ride.  For the VW lovers and ones who love to restore and "pimp their rides" this is a solid base Westfalia.  The VW is sold as-is, with no warranty and no returns of deposits or partial payments.  Please do not bid if you do not intend to purchase based on the terms stated within.  I will try to answer all emails quickly and will include my telephone number if you would prefer to communicate via phone.  I welcome all communication, and will accomodate anyone wishing to view or test drive in person.

VW CEO lost his job over buggy software that delayed new models

Mon, Jul 25 2022

It says a lot about the state of the auto industry and where it's going that software problems have cost the CEO of a carmaker his job. Volkswagen ousted Herbert Diess as chief executive officer after severe software-development delays set back the scheduled launch of new Porsches, Audis and Bentleys. This was untenable considering buggy software postponed the debut of VW’s initial rollout of ID models, and customers are still having to drop off their cars at the dealer for updates the company has struggled to make over the air. Sure, Diess also didnÂ’t do enough to make allies and became increasingly isolated due to his hard-nosed leadership style. In his push to transform the company into an electric-vehicle leader, he repeatedly clashed with labor leaders by warning VW was losing out to Tesla and needed to cut thousands of jobs. But failures at the carmakerÂ’s software unit Cariad ultimately eroded DiessÂ’s support from the powerful Porsche and Piech family that calls the shots. Back in December, VW overhauled its management board, stripping Diess of some responsibilities while tasking him to turn around Cariad. While thereÂ’s been a lot of re-arranging since then, Diess didnÂ’t manage to make the issues go away. Discord at Cariad has pushed back the rollout of important new models including the electric Porsche Macan, a high-volume sport utility vehicle for the division thatÂ’s planning an initial public offering in the fourth quarter. AudiÂ’s new line of Artemis EVs has been delayed by around two years to 2027. And VWÂ’s ultra-luxury brand Bentley may not be able to go all-electric by the end of this decade as planned because of the software issues, Automobilwoche reported earlier this month. “Taking over the ship at Cariad seems to have been DiessÂ’s downfall,” said Matthias Schmidt, an independent auto analyst based in Berlin. VWÂ’s solutions to challenges tend to reflect its status as an industrial behemoth: itÂ’s able to throw lots of money and people at its problems. But modernizing the company for the digital age is going to take bringing in talent and building skillsets outside its traditional zones of expertise. Drivers increasingly demand intuitive user interfaces and services that could create new revenue streams, if done correctly. “Software is the key to the future,” TeslaÂ’s Elon Musk tweeted when one of his followers asked about VW switching CEOs. Diess certainly didnÂ’t lack ambition.

VW rolls out new California camper van

Sat, Jun 13 2015

Volkswagen introduced the sixth-generation Transporter van a few months ago, ushering in a new era for the once-iconic VW bus. But the Transporter isn't the only version Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles bases on its core van chassis. It also offers the Caravelle, the Multivan, and this, the new the California camper. Based on the T6, the latest California is now being rolled out for what you might call "outdoor recreation enthusiasts." Depending on which configuration you choose, it can fit up to seven people on the road and sleep up to five. VW has thrown everything into this van, literally including the kitchen sink. It's also got beds, a pop-top, and a dual-burner gas range. The new VW California can be had in three trim levels (dubbed Beach, Coast, and Ocean) and with a range of gasoline and diesel powertrain options. That is, where it can be had, because despite the name, the California (like the rest of VW's commercial vehicles) isn't actually offered in California or any of the other 49 states in the Union. Off on holiday – advance sales of the new California have begun - In three equipment lines: Beach, Coast and Ocean - Entry-level prices from just ˆ41,429.85 - New TDI and TSI engines – lower fuel consumption and stop/start function as standard - Modern infotainment, assistance systems and DCC suspension Hannover, 10 June 2015 – Advance sales of the new California have started at dealerships in Germany. Prices start at ˆ41,429.85 (Beach with 62 kW TDI). The California is now available in three equipment lines: Beach, Coast and Ocean. The California Beach is the entry-level model. It is the perfect combination of a 7-seat passenger car and a motorhome with up to five berths. Equipped as standard with a manual pop-up roof and two different layouts (double reclining bench seat with storage compartment or folding triple bench seat with multiflex board), it provides the ideal base for everyday life and travelling. Naturally, the integrated roller blinds enable the creation of privacy and shade, just as the ability to turn the front seats around enables driver and passengers to sit together in a cosy seating group. In combination with the removable camping table within the sliding door and the folding chairs in the tailgate, you are always equipped for outings of all kinds. New to the range is the California Coast.
