Everybody loves the roomy VW Vanagon except for the anemic 2.1 flat four that can barely muster enough power to get out of its own way. Much less when you add passengers, and a roof rack full of bicycles, and turn on the AC. You'd be lucky to hit 45 mph with a tailwind.
So what would dad do? (Dad is an all time Porsche guru) Dad would shoehorn in a 1987 Porsche 928S V8 into the back. Best of both worlds! Room, and absurd amounts of power!
The van still retains the 4wd syncro benefit, the transmission has been built using the tallest gear ratio possible and hardened gears and upgraded differential by AA Transaxle so the engine is turning smoothly at 70 mph and not spinning its guts out.
The motor does protrude slightly from the rear of the sheetmetal but as you can see, not by much. We installed a trailer hitch to protect the motor from shopping carts and parking bumps, things of that nature.
The rear decklid has been modified to allow for the taller motor so you can still motor comfortably throughout the countryside without intoxicating yourself on fumes.
Of course the interior has been fitted with Porsche seats (out of a 968), steering wheel (from a 944S2) and wheels from a 928. (the rears are the phone dial style, unfortunately in storage the matching flat disc style were lost.)

The van also comes with the Euro sport front bumper, OEM VW fender flares, extra misc parts like electric window regulator/motor and a few bins of extra Vanagon odds and ends. Brake pads, CV joints... things of that nature. Dad also printed out large electrical schematics of his modifications to the wiring system so you will get the schematics of all electrical so there is no 'home brew' guessing if you have an electrical issue in the future. The VW chassis wiring is stock, the Porsche motor wiring is stock, Dad documented the joining of these two systems with great detail so it would be easy for me to run, and own.

Now for the bad part.
I live in California. Normally that is a good thing but in the instance of vehicle engine swaps California leaves a lot to be desired.
I have tried and tried to get the DMV to register the van but they are stuck in the dark ages and will not allow me to register it because VW never offered this motor in their van. Even though it passes smog for a 1987 928, (it even passes emissions for a 1986 Vanagon syncro!) they don't care. I gave up 6 years ago, the van went into storage and now its time to move on.
The batteries are ruined, they will need to be replaced. The motor turns over just fine but you'll want to empty the 1/4 tank of old gas before you fire her up.
 The motor is block #M28/42.

Comes with a clean title, no surprises.
Located in Hollister if you want to come see it.
The van will need to be towed as it does not run. I put the batteries on a charger overnight but they hold zero charge.
I will offer to deliver the van within 1000 miles from 95037 for $.60 per mile.
Google maps your zip to my zip, multiply that mileage by $.60 and there is your delivery fee.
Delivery will only be after payment and delivery fee has been paid.

VW pulls Lamborghini and Bentley from the Paris Motor Show

Tue, Sep 20 2016

It's been slightly more than a year since the news that Volkswagen had intentionally cheated on diesel emissions testing broke. Since then, the company's reputation and image have suffered and it has struggled to regain its footing and composure. The automaker is shelling out billions in fines, so cost cutting is inevitable. Today, Reuters reports that Volkswagen subsidiaries Lamborghini and Bentley won't bring their elaborate displays to the Paris Motor Show next week. Auto shows can cost automakers millions of dollars, especially for supercar and luxury car brands that constantly try to compete and one-up with each other. Much of the money and fanfare goes to catering the media, and if an automaker has nothing new to reveal it can be difficult to justify the expense. The company told Reuters that it plans to attend smaller events that focus more on potential buyers. The Volkswagen group as a whole has shifted it's focus, both when it comes to products and auto shows like Paris. Next week, the automaker will be focusing on electric vehicles and electromobility. The company plans to reveal a new EV with 373 miles of range, eclipsing both the Tesla Model 3 and Chevy Bolt. Volkswagen has plans for 30 new electric vehicles by 2025. Lamborghini and Bentley aren't the only major automakers skipping Paris. Ford, Volvo, and Aston Martin have all decided to save money and focus their efforts elsewhere. Related Video:

Next VW GTI to get 10-speed dual-clutch gearbox

Wed, Nov 26 2014

Following on Volkswagen's official announcement that it was working on a ten-speed, dual-clutch transmission, Auto Express has it on "good authority" that the new transmission will end up in the next GTI, GTD and Golf R. The brand's current seven-speed will be retained for lesser eight-generation Golfs. While the new gearbox won't be limited to just the higher-end Golf range, the new hatchback, expected in 2017, will be the first to get it, Auto Express reports. The new DSG is the same size as the Volkswagen Group's seven-speed dual-clutch, and will easily fit into VAG's MQB platform, so we should expect it to filter into the rest of the Group's vehicles, much like the seven-speed 'box has. The ten-speed is likely to see applications beyond even the small cars of the MQB platform. The gearbox can handle 405 pound-feet of torque, according to AE, making its application in larger offerings such as the gas-powered MLB cars and crossovers a likelihood. Beyond the new gearbox, Volkswagen is also toying with mild-hybrid tech for the standard Golf and better batteries for the e-Golf. As we said, expect the new Golf to arrive in European markets in 2017, with the current Euro-market Golf getting updated next year. As for the US, we wouldn't be surprised if VW followed the trail blazed by the Mark 7, with a North American arrival for the eight-gem Golf slated for a year or so after sales in Europe begin.

VW budget sub-brand stuck in limbo over VW standards, costs

Sun, Mar 2 2014

Reports in October 2012 claimed Volkswagen had begun investigating the creation of its own budget brand. This came after having failed to purchase Malaysian car company Proton or produce a meaningful partnership with Suzuki, and after watching Renault-Nissan make piles of euro on Dacia and plot the return of Datsun. For VW, more important than the question of what to call it was how to build it profitably and in a way that didn't damage the VW brand. According to a report in Autocar, a satisfactory answer still hasn't been found. The hurdle is how to hit "'necessary' quality and safety levels" at the price points needed to make the venture worthwhile. At the time of the 2012 report, German outlet Der Spiegel said VW was trying to get prices down to 6,000 to 8,000 euro ($7,784 to $10,379 US), about two thousand to four thousand euro under the price of the VW Up and in line with the cost of a 6,790-euro Dacia Sandero in Germany. In March 2013, VW announced, "We want to bring a true budget car to the market in China in the foreseeable future," the most concrete move in that direction after years of planning to make a decision. Working with local Chinese maker FAW, it was predicted that the vehicle in question would appear around 2016, but as of November last year a final vote on it needed to wait until this year because "We are still working on the cost side" and profit possibilities for a car that "has to be durable, it has to be precise, it has to be safe." Even Fiat, another automaker long considering a budget brand beneath its Fiat line-up, wasn't sure how to squeeze any extra money from lower-cost products but was sure that it couldn't be done by manufacturing in Europe. If VW hasn't yet made the math work with a joint venture in China, it will be interesting to see how it might build a European go-it-alone business case.
