This 79 Camper was recently pulled out of a retired VW Mechanics shop where it has sat on his lift since 1997. About 10 years ago he pulled the motor and had the heads rebuilt after dropping a valve on the freeway. The bottom end of the motor was rebuilt by him about 8,000 miles before that. Looking at the motor the heads look NEW but the motor case is a little dirty and you can tell that it has had some mile on it since it was rebuilt. He never finished the install and has not fired since he put it back together. We finished the install, replaced some fuel lines, flushed the tank several times until we weren't getting any more junk out of it, replaced the battery, put on new german factory exhaust and she fired right up. We also replaced the tires and refinished the wheels while the tires were off. We sent off a few cushions on the inside and had them reupholstered using the original fabric from the back bed cushion and had it recovered with matching vinyl. The entire interior was cleaned meticulously including pulling the rear seat and pressure washing the carpet. The carpet does show signs of wear and an all weather carpet mat was cut and installed over the original carpet. The bus shows 33,000 on the odometer which I am told is really 133,000 miles. The interior has some scuffs here and there and some of the paneling is cracked but all in all it is very clean and everyone who sees it is amazed that it is all original. All of the T-molding on the edges of tables and cabinets was replaced but we couldn't locate the smaller T-molding where the cabinets come together so there is some molding that is a little warped from age. A new PGW windshield was installed along with a new rubber gasket. Front mat was removed as were the front seats and everything scrubbed, cleaned and waxed. The tent top is in great shape with some marks and scuffs. The bug screen has a couple of small holes but is very nice. The exterior of the bus was completely rubbed out using a heavy cut cleaner and waxed. There are a couple of small dents and dings that can be seen in the pics. Very little rust on this bus with the exception of the rear wheel wells, 2 holes in the battery tray the size of a quarter and a couple of small rust spots in the doglegs. There were several spots on the surface of the paint that had bad rust spots and when these were polished out we had to rub through the paint into the primer but they are not noticeable from 5 to 10 feet away. This bus drives very nice. Brakes work great but just today it developed a squeak in the right front. I plan to pull the wheel and clean the pads as the pads and rotors look new. This bus is original paint with the exception of the nose. It was painted years ago and is slightly off on color. The bumpers have also been repainted with white semi gloss single stage. I haven't checked any of the plumbing to see if it works and I have NOT fired the stove. Checking the plumbing and propane fittings will be left up to the new owner.  This thing has a SWEET tape deck, amp, and 8 speakers. Sounds Great for as old as it is. Sold AS IS, WHER IS.  Will be happy to meet your shipper.  I have put about 500 miles on this bus in the last week and have had zero problems with it except for a squeak or two from the right front brake pads.  Email or call with questions. Volkswagen Golf R wagon promises to be fast and functional [w/poll]

Tue, 25 Mar 2014

Volkswagen's array of performance-oriented Golfs keeps getting bigger and bigger. What started with the GTI has since grown to include the diesel GTD, the hybrid GTE and the most powerful Golf R. But the additions haven't all come down to powertain. There's been cabrio versions of the GTI and Golf R as well, but before all is said and done, there will be one more bodystyle to join the lineup.
That, according to these latest spy shots, would be the Golf R Variant. For those unfamiliar, Variant is what Volkswagen calls the wagon version of the Golf (in some markets, anyway). It offers the Golf Variant with a variety of engines, but as the spy shots reveal, it is now working on bringing the Golf Variant and the Golf R together into one high-powered, long-roofed model.
The VW Golf R Variant would in all likelihood pack the same 2.0-liter turbo four as the hatchback, splitting 290 horsepower between all four wheels. Only in the wagon, it would offer that extra bit of utility. Of course there's no guarantee that Volkswagen would offer the Golf R Variant in the North American market, but considering that the Golf R hatchback will soon be joined in American showrooms by the Golf SpotWagen (as it's tipped to be called here) in place for the Jetta wagon, the possibility is definitely there.

Volkswagen Motorsport cranks out Golf touring car

Fri, Jul 10 2015

Just when you thought Volkswagen had done all the hot Golfs we could handle, its motorsports division has come out with an even hotter one. This racing version is built to compete in the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) across Europe and Asia, and certainly looks the part. Based on the production Golf hatchback we all know, the TCR competition version promises to be to circuit-based touring car racing what the Polo R WRC is to the rally stage. And that little pocket rocket has been positively dominating the World Rally Championship. Developed in conjunction with Seat's racing department and Liqui Moly Team Engstler, the Golf touring car packs the 2.0-liter turbo four from the Golf R. Only instead of 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque in the production version, it's been tuned to channel 330 hp and 302 lb-ft to the front wheels (instead of all four) through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. It rides on 18-inch alloys fitted to a track widened by nearly a foot and a half, along with a competition-spec aero kit to keep it glued to the tarmac and a stripped-out cockpit. Though the 2015 TCR series is already under way, a pair of these racing Golfs will be entered in the upcoming round at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, before the series heads off to Singapore (in support of the F1 grand prix there) and Thailand ahead of the final round in Macau. If everything goes well, customer teams will be able to pick these up and enter them in next year's championship. Volkswagen develops new Golf for the racetrack - Concept car for customer racing, in line with new TCR regulations - Production-based touring car with 330 hp, front-wheel drive and six-speed DSG gearbox - First competitive test this weekend in Spielberg (A) Wolfsburg (09 July 2015). A new Golf for the racetrack: Volkswagen Motorsport is developing its first racing car based on the seventh generation Golf. The production-based, 330-hp concept car is assembled in accordance with TCR regulations and is intended to help Volkswagen evaluate a potential customer racing programme from the 2016 season onwards. In order to accelerate the development of the car, the new Golf will be tested under competitive conditions between now and the end of the season: as cooperation partner, the Liqui Moly Team Engstler will run two cars at the eighth round of the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg (A).

Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla Model S full speed, Pheonix EVs at LAX

Fri, Jun 5 2015

A Tesla Model S driver shows what it's like to maintain about 125 miles per hour on the German Autobahn. In the video, Bjorn Nyland records his trip from a stop at a Supercharger 25 miles to the Danish border while driving about 200 kph for about 12 minutes. Upon entering the Autobahn, he hits the limiter at about 212 kph, or almost 132 mph. As he's driving, the car's estimated driving range adjusts for his speed, and he quickly loses quite a few miles. He doesn't care, though. He's having fun. See the video above, and read more at Inside EVs. Phoenix Cars has provided an Electric Shuttle Bus to an airport parking company at the Los Angeles International Airport. As LAX's first electric shuttle bus, it is expected to run two shifts seven days a week, saving more than 60 tons of CO2 emissions yearly. The electric shuttle bus will be on display from June 29 to July 2 at the International Parking Institute Conference and Expo in Las Vegas. Phoenix also recently supplied its ZEUS electric flatbed to the US Navy. Read more in the press release below. Ballard will operate a fleet of eight hydrogen-powered buses in London for an additional five years. Transport for London uses the buses, powered by Ballard fuel cell technology, for its central Covent Garden-Tower Gateway route. The first five buses went into service in 2010 as Transport for London aimed to reduce CO2 emissions by 60 percent from 1990 levels by 2025. The three additional buses joined the fleet in 2013. "This contract extension is a positive endorsement of zero-emission fuel cell technology in transit applications, based on the demonstrated performance of these buses over the past five years," says Ballard Chief Commercial Officer Steve Karaffa. "Clean transportation is a growing concern for transit authorities globally and our fuel cell modules deliver a proven solution." Read more from Ballard. Volkswagen and SAIC are expanding electric vehicle operations in China. The partners will expand the main Shanghai Volkswagen plant to build electric vehicles. "Over the next four years, we plan to localize more than 15 different electric vehicle models in China, including plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles," says Volkswagen's Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann. Volkswagen will also step up fuel cell and plug-in hybrid research in China. In about four years, Volkswagen will build a new EV, based on the popular Lavida, at the Anting plant outside of Shanghai.
