This is a 1977 Volkswagen pop top camper bus with an interesting twist. It has an all Aluminum Oldsmobile 3500cc (215 cid) water cooled V8 engine. The bus is completely running and driving and as you might imagine, is far more powerful than a stock bus.
The body is in overall very good condition. Underneath is very solid and not rusty. The rocker panels and jacking points ( a common rust problem area) are excellent. The cab floors under the rubber mat have rusty colored spots but no holes. The only rusty area is the battery tray on both sides of the engine where there are some holes and bubbles you can see from the outside on the right side. There are some small dents and dings on the outside but for an old bus it's amazingly straight and clean. The paint is decent with some scratches, spots and touch ups but overall presents quite nicely. The paint on the pop top is a little rough and flaky in spots and there is a slight crack in the fiberglass but it doesn't leak. The windshield is original and has some fogging around the outer edge but no cracks or big chips. The rubber seal for the windshield is a bit rough and old looking. A little water leaks in at the bottom of the windshield in heavy rain. All the other glass is great. There is no major rust around the windshield or other windows that I can see. It has a nice aftermarket aluminum step on the passenger side that fits into the jacking points. The V8 engine is in good condition and starts easy, runs smooth with great power and no smoke. whoever did the conversion did an excellent job. There is a nicely made heavy duty engine mount. The exhaust is very well done and looks and sounds fabulous. The radiator is housed in an extension at the rear that did not require cutting the outer body of the bus. cooling is achieved by two electric fans that come on automatically as needed. Engine access is very good, a large hatch from a Type 3 VW has been adapted into the area above the engine. The shroud and radiator can be quite easily removed to gain access to the front of the engine. It has a new alternator and new battery. The tires are great with plenty of tread and it has a great spare plus the tools to change it. I've noticed a few drops of oil where it is parked but it doesn't have any major leaks. The suspension rides nice and smooth, the steering is great. The brakes work great and the handbrake works too. The clutch works well but chatters a little sometimes usually when it's cold. The gearbox works perfect in all gears and shifts nicely. It has a Gene Berg T handle speed shifter. The Interior is decent. The front seats are nice and very comfortable but have a few holes especially on the passenger arm rest. The passenger seat can swivel around to face the rear of the bus and the drivers seat can turn sideways. The dash is nice. All the instruments work. The fuel gauge does work but reads just over half when it's all the way full. It has a working tachometer, oil pressure, water temperature and amp gauge. It has two heaters that use hot water from the engine. The front one located on the passenger side can provide floor heat or defrost and the rear heater is under the right bench seat, both have 2 speed fans controlled from the dash. The lights all work, the wipers work (both speeds and they park). It has a nice aftermarket Lecarra steering wheel. The inner cardboard glove box is missing. The pop top is in decent condition with just one slight rip on the right side window flap. I do not have the mattress for the pop top bed area. The table in the back can be used to form another bed but I'm not totally sure how that works. There is a cabinet with a sink, refrigerator, stove and propane heater. I've never really tried to run any of these so I can't speak of their working condition. There is a potable water tank under the left bench seat, A fitting is broken going to the pump for the sink. I turned the stove on and heard a hiss so it likely is working. It also has a very securely mounted class 3 style ( 2" receptacle) tow hitch and a flat four connector for trailer lights. Overall this is quite a nice and unusual bus that you can jump in and drive right away. It does have a clear title. I highly recommend and encourage a personal inspection if possible. The bus can be viewed by appointment in Granite Falls WA (near Seattle) Buyer is responsible for shipping costs and arrangements. Must be picked up within 30 days of auction end. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Please feel free to ask any questions. Please watch the video of this bus in action: |

Aurora's Chris Urmson on autonomy — that's one way to avoid speeding tickets
Wed, Jan 17 2018Although this year's CES was full of companies announcing and exhibiting their real and conceivable self-driving car technologies, while actual self-driving cars from Aptiv-Lyft were giving conventioneers 400 rides around town, the biggest news came when Volkswagen Group — and recognize this is the entire group, not just the brand — and Hyundai announced that they'd both partnered with Aurora Innovation. While the VW announcement was vague — "The collaboration brings the two companies together to realize self-driving electric vehicles in cities as Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) fleets" — Hyundai provided a concrete goal: "a strategic partnership to bring self-driving Hyundai vehicles to market by 2021." You may not have heard of Aurora, which has been described in some news accounts as "mysterious." But Aurora Innovation has been in business since December 2016, and it is to autonomous technology what the 1927 Yankees are to baseball. The three leaders of the company are Chris Urmson, co-founder and CEO, who had previously been chief technology officer for Alphabet Self-Driving Cars; Sterling Anderson, co-founder and chief product officer, who had directed the development of Tesla Autopilot; and Drew Bagnell, co-founder and chief technical officer, who had been autonomy architect and perception lead at the Uber Advanced Technology Center. We had the chance to sit down with Chris Urmson after he appeared onstage at a Hyundai press conference. He shared his insights on Aurora's approach to automated driving. Initial deployment of self-driving cars? "We think the first place this technology comes to market in in the transportation services or ride-hailing applications, but that's for our partners to decide." (Ride-sharing is a strategy a lot of players in the field are shooting for, as round-the-clock use is one way for paying for what will initially be a technology too costly for private ownership.) Transporting goods or people? "I personally — and as a company — am more excited initially about moving people around. Urban mobility. That's where you see the largest social impact. And it provides better access to mobility for people." Can you create a car that doesn't crash? "It is a fundamentally hard problem because other operators on the road can behave erratically at any moment. For example, if you are in a two-lane, opposing-traffic road, if you want to be safe, you don't drive there, ever.
2014 Volkswagen XL1 [w/video]
Mon, 11 Mar 2013World's Most Efficient Car Impresses, Not Without Compromises
Among our many duties at the recent Geneva Motor Show, we were offered a pretty exclusive drive in the new Volkswagen XL1 hyper-efficient plug-in diesel hybrid. There is so much that is interesting about a car like this reaching production from a major automaker that it's tough to know where to begin.
First off, you should know that - at least for this generation - there is absolutely no chance in Albuquerque that this "1-liter vehicle" (i.e. a vehicle that can burn just one liter of fuel to travel 100 kilometers, or 62.1 miles) will ever make it into the hands of North American customers. We, too, were having trouble imagining an XL1 in typical American traffic, surrounded by comparatively massive pickups and SUVs. The driving experience had us recalling a couple of weeks in 1999 when we drove the then-revolutionary Honda Insight hybrid on US roads. We keenly remember the feeling of being very small and vulnerable, even as we felt proudly green in our 61-mpg Tochigi pod. Thing is, the Volkswagen is smaller still, and nearly as light despite its more complex drivetrain and safety features.
Electrify Expo is an all-electrified auto show like the old days
Sun, Aug 6 2023In late July, Autoblog swung by Washington, D.C. to check out the Electrify Expo. Now in its third year of nationwide shows, the Electrify Expo calls itself “North America's largest electric vehicle festival filled with over 1 million square feet of the world's top electric brands.” At every stop, visitors can find out about, crawl around in, drive and ride just about any personal conveyance that uses a battery for propulsion. Truth be told, when the show's PR team reached out to us with an invite, we only considered going after finding out about an area showcasing battery-electric tuner cars. EV tuning is undoubtedly going to be huge—eventually—which got us curious about these early days. We figured weÂ’d brave whatever the rest of the expo was to find out whatÂ’s the equivalent of nitrous for a Tesla. See, the EV event scene is still such that one never knows if theyÂ’ll show up to a mix of science and county fairs with a few cars on display just for truth in advertising, or if theyÂ’ll show up to a parking lot with 26 cars, 10 of them locked, 10 of them homemade, and 6 guarded by promotional hires desperate to tap all your identifying info a tablet before dispensing dubious and superficial information. Which is to say, we didnÂ’t expect much. And that makes us chuffed to report: Electrify Expo is great. We hadnÂ’t been strolling the lot outside the old RFK Stadium for five minutes before thinking, “This feels like an old-school auto show!” The exclamation to that point came from a group of four who cut me off to reach the C40 Recharge in the Volvo booth, one of them exclaiming as if he were the group expert and as if his friends were deaf, “THATÂ’S THE LEAST EXPENSIVE ONE! AND ITÂ’S BEEEE-YOUUUUU-TI-FULLLLLL!” I wasnÂ’t there to judge, I was there for the enthusiasm. Automakers had built small, simple, open booths, parked cars in them, then provided visitors the kind of interactions that will do the most good for anyone wondering about or interested in an EV. We only saw two cars that were off limits, the new Volkswagen ID.Buzz and the Ford F-100 Eluminator. Volvo wouldnÂ’t let me get an espresso from their chic little trailer, either, unless I visited the EX90 Experience trailer first. Otherwise, it was a free-for-all. Tesla had a large booth full of cars. BMW had two i7s open for everyone to sit in, next to the Ford booth with that Eluminator and an unlocked Mustang Mach-E GT and F-150 Lightning showing their cooler-chest-frunk trick.
