1977 Type 2 transporter. 2 front bucket seats and 2 bench seats. Senegal red/white top, I think it was repainted at some time- 2 liter/4 cylinder/4 speed manual transmission. Runs and drives fine- straight and true; actual mileage unknown, shows 86K on odometer. Good condition for its age; I started project for my 16 year old daughter and wife shit-canned the idea of a 16 year old daily driving a VW hippy bus. Body repairs 60% and mechanical restoration 95% complete; It is to the point that the bus is mechanically fit, and I considered it safe to drive. Mechanically good to very good condition: engine rubber replaced such as belts fuel lines and seals, valves adjusted, compression tested good on all 4 cylinders. New battery and battery tray installed 6/13. Problematic VW fuel injection removed and replaced with new Webber electric choke downdraft 2bbl carburetor, fuel filter, air filter, new manifold and new fuel pump 4/13. Ignition system and distributor completely rebuilt 4/13: new bushings, coil, points, condenser, plugs and wires, timed. Engine was replaced/rebuilt(?) at unknown time before I purchased vehicle- but it is evident it was professionally removed and re-installed. New front wheel bearings installed. Good (existing) clutch. Brakes completely done- Front: new pads, rotors and rebuilt calipers; Back: new drums pads backing plates, parking brake cable, rebuilt pistons. Spare rebuilt master cylinder included. New shocks and bushings installed and good tires all around including spare and jack. Body and floors fair condition: all rust- through either sheet metal repaired or fiberglass patched- some surface rust and small dents/scratches remain, could use paint and body work on bottom half of van, but hard stuff is complete. I believe all head, tail turn lights work. Chrome VW "half moon" hubcaps. VW factory supplemental gas heater installed- unknown condition. Interior: has original spare tire cover and jack, original off white interior in good/fair/dirty conditions, seats with no major issues, could use rubber floor mats and under dash fascia. All window glass and doors in good operable condition. Dash cluster loose- unknown condition- spedo, tach and gas gauge disconnected, heater fan runs. Extra parts including gauge cluster, mirrors and used exhaust parts master cylinder, "Robert Bently" Volkswagen Bus Service Manual and more. I have restored and repaired many older German cars and am a straight shooter with skill; over $6000 invested including purchase-price, without including labor hours; I just don't want to store it for the winter or I would finish the job and sell it for $10,000. As is- as shown. - showing Saturdays and Sundays by appointment only, leave your number with questions or to make appointment and I will call. You tube http://youtu.be/9BUxd9pgJY4

VW and partner SAIC start building $2.5B Audi plant in China

Fri, Oct 19 2018

BEIJING — Volkswagen AG's China joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp has started building a $2.5 billion new energy vehicle (NEV) plant in Shanghai, which will make VW's luxury Audi brand cars, a possible first for the venture. The new plant is a key step for Audi to diversify production of its cars in the world's largest car market from its long-standing local partner, China FAW Group Corp. This shift has been delayed amid resistance from local dealers. SAIC Volkswagen said the new plant would have an annual capacity to make 300,000 cars and begin production from 2020. Audi sold 481,387 vehicles in China from January to September this year. The announcement comes the same week Tesla secured a Shanghai location for a Gigafactory battery plant to serve the Chinese market. Audi unveiled the plan to bolster ties with SAIC in late 2016. Earlier this year, the Germany luxury carmaker bought a 1 percent stake in the SAIC Volkswagen venture, paving the way for the joint venture to produce and sell Audi cars. Volkswagen currently gets a larger proportion of the proceeds from the 50-50 tie-up with SAIC than from its 40 percent stake in the venture with FAW. SAIC Volkswagen said in a statement on Friday the plant would cost 17 billion yuan ($2.5 billion) and would make VW and Skoda models as well as Audi cars. It will help VW tap China's fast-growing market for NEVs, a category comprising electric battery cars and plug-in electric hybrid vehicles. Yes, a family of 5 can live in a 1981 VW Westfalia van

Fri, Feb 14 2014

Automakers and marketers trying to reach environmentally conscious consumers who desire the simple life basically have two strategies: promote electric vehicles that can be charged through green energy or sell a 30-year-old Volkswagen van on Craigslist. Nicolas Boullosa and Kirsten Dirksen opted for Plan B and turned a 1981 Volkswagen Westfalia camper into a "micro-living" experiment. The co-founders of the simple living website faircompanies packed up their van and three young children for a road trip through the Pacific Northwest. They even turned the adventure into a documentary called Summer of (Family) Love, which you can view below. It's two hours long, so maybe add this to your weekend viewing list. They limited themselves to one backpack per person into a camper that they purchased off Craigslist and named "Westy." They stuck to their original intention of cooking all their own meals off a propane stove, creating a new little home every night in a different location, mostly spaces outside RV parks. They met up with other enthusiasts of the "tiny house" community who live like nomads. They were able to interview a few of then and, "With each stop we picked up some new piece of wisdom about life's essentials," Dirksen wrote in the faircompanies blog. VW makes $9.2B offer for rest of truckmaker Scania

Sun, 23 Feb 2014

Volkswagen owns or has controlling interests in three commercial truck operations: besides its own, VW began buying shares in Sweden's Scania in 2000 and now controls 89.2 percent of its shares and 62.6 percent of its capital, then bought into Germany's Man in 2006 - in order to prevent Man from trying to take over Scania - and now owns 75 percent of it. The car company has managed to work out 200 million euros in savings, but believes it can unlock a total of 650 million euros in savings if it takes outright control of Scania and can spread more common parts among the three divisions.
It has proposed a 6.7-billion-euro ($9.2 billion) buyout, but according to a Bloomberg report, Scania's minority investors don't appear inclined to the deal. Although effectively controlled by VW, Scania is an independently-listed Swedish company, and a profitable one at that: in the January-September 2013 period its operating profit was 9.4 percent compared to Man's 0.4 percent. Some of the other shareholders believe that Scania is better off on its own and will not approve the deal, some have asked an auditor to look into the potential conflict of interest between VW and Man, while some are willing to examine the deal and "make an evaluation based on what a long-term owner finds is good," which might not be just "the stock market price plus a few percent." The buyout will only be official assuming VW can reach the 90-percent share threshold that Swedish law mandates for a squeeze-out.
Many of the arguments against boil down to investors believing that Scania's Swedishness and unique offerings are what keep it profitable, and ownership by the German car company will kill that. (Have we heard that somewhere before?) If Volkswagen can buy that additional 0.8-percent share in Scania, perhaps its buyout wrangling with Man will give it an idea of what it's in for: "dozens" of minority investors in the German truckmaker have filed cases against VW, seeking higher prices for their shares. It is likely only to delay the inevitable, though. If VW is really going to compete with Daimler and Volvo in the truck market, it has to get the size, clout and savings to do so.
