1967 VOLKSWAGEN 21-WINDOW DELUXE MICROBUS

The last of the breed! 1967 was the last production year for the “split-screen” Type II Volkswagens. This is the very desirable and collectible “top-of-the-line” Type II; the 21-Window Sunroof Deluxe Microbus in Cumulus White over Sea Blue – AND it’s a walk-through! This is NOT a replica, grafted roof or hack job. It is a bona fide early-production 1967 Deluxe bus.

Prior to my ownership, this bus was owned by my friend and neighbor (also an avid VW enthusiast) for over 16 years. He purchased it in un-restored, original condition. It had some rust in the typical areas; the rockers, parts of the cabin floor and the battery tray area. Just after he purchased it, the welding was done and the right cargo door was replaced, then, it was repainted the original color, Sea Blue, from the beltline down. While some of the Cumulus White paint was redone around the windshield, nose and right cargo door, the entire roof and much of the white from the beltline up is the original paint. There are a couple of scratches on the roof from long ago. The sliding roof is original and has a small tear, as well as some wearing through in a couple of spots from decades of use, but it's the original material. It operates smoothly and easily, as it should. The headliner (including the sliding top headliner material) is 100% original.

All interior panels are the original, Aero Papyrus material, which is not available in reproduction form. It still has the original spare tire cover, though it has a tear. The side kick-panel for the correct two-thirds middle seat is missing. All the mats, both front and back rubber mats, as well as the sisal mat in the cargo area are original to the bus. The fuel gauge, wipers, lights, signals, and flashers work perfectly. The clock was working until recently (contacts probably just need cleaning). I have not tried to use the washer bottle, but the setup is all there and in very good condition. It still has the original 12 volt sticker on the dash. The glass is all original. The passenger windshield has a “baseball” crack, but the previous owner was waiting to find a correctly marked replacement. This is a December '66 bus, so it doesn’t have backup lights and has the ’66-style radio knobs. Otherwise, it exhibits all the '67, one-year-only, bus characteristics, 12v, etc. The seats were redone years ago using Lenny Copp, West Coast Classic seat covers, which are still in very good condition. The pop-outs were removed, frames resprayed Cumulus White and all new rubber was installed last year.

A fresh single-port 1600 engine was rebuilt and installed by Jeff Leininger of Jeff's Bug Shop, Houston, in 2006. It currently has approximately 10,000 miles since the rebuild. It runs very well and has been as reliable as a Swiss watch. At about the same time, the brakes, master cylinder, drums, wheel bearings, tie rods, and other suspension components were rebuilt or replaced. It has a fairly fresh set of tires (fronts 2013, rears 2012). It has a fresh battery, generator and regulator. The prior owner has driven it, along with his family, to Bulli Brigade (annual national VW event in St. Petersburg, FL) regularly since 2006, including last November without incident.

This is certainly a bus worthy of car shows, but it is not concourse – and wasn’t intended to be. You can find those, freshly so-called “restored” which may or may not be correct, but it’s quite a challenge to find an ORIGINAL 21-window deluxe in this condition. This bus is very original, except for the rust repairs and lower body repaint 15+ years ago. It is a very nice, solid example of one that has been well cared for by two avid VW enthusiasts for more than a decade and a half! Since the rocker panels and dog-legs were replaced over fifteen years ago, along with the underside being media blasted to remove any surface rust, then coated with POR-15, no rust has since bubbled through and there is no evidence of any rust issues.

The guiding philosophy during my and the previous owner’s ownership was to leave this bus as untouched and original as possible, knowing and appreciating that they are only original ONCE! Except for fixing things as needed to keep the body, interior and running gear in tip-top shape, that philosophy has been honored. To that end, one could hop inside and drive anywhere with confidence.

This bus will not disappoint!!

(Note: Some of the photos do not show the 2/3 middle seat. It was only removed for the photo so it would not obstruct. It IS shown in one photo as it currently installed. This is the proper "1967-only" 2/3 middle seat with the '67-only ashtray on the back of it and IT IS INCLUDED in the sale!)

VW's Winterkorn to stick around through at least 2018

Thu, Sep 3 2015

Volkswagen may yet to have found a new chairman, but it's not about to get rid of its chief executive any time soon. The German automaker has announced its intention to renew Martin Winterkorn's contract through the end of 2018. That is, assuming that the Supervisory Board heeds the recommendation of its own Executive Committee when the full 20-member board meets on September 25. 68-year-old Winterkorn joined the Volkswagen Group back in 1993 after a decade and a half at Bosch. He was named head of Audi in 2002, and chairman of the Board of Management (effectively the chief executive officer) of the entire Volkswagen Group in 2007. Just a few months ago he faced off against Ferdinand Piech – chairman of the company's supervisory board and grandson of Ferdinand Porsche – that resulted in Winterkorn's victory and Piech's resignation. The executive committee's endorsement, then, is effectively a vote of confidence in Winterkorn's leadership. It still leaves unresolved the question of who will ultimately take over as chairman to succeed Piech. Winterkorn was touted for a potential promotion, but if the supervisory board renews his contract – currently set to expire next year – he'll be staying right where he is and a new chairman will need to be found. The chair is currently filled on an interim basis by Berthold Huber, former head of the union that was instrumental in Piech's ousting. Wolfsburg, 02 September 2015 Resolution of the Executive Committee of the Volkswagen AG Supervisory Board The Executive Committee of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG unanimously agreed a resolution for submission to the Supervisory Board at its meeting on September 25, 2015 under which a new contract as Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG for a term until December 31, 2018 should be concluded with Professor Dr. Martin Winterkorn. "Together with Professor Martin Winterkorn at the helm we will continue on our successful path of recent years and systematically implement the goals of Strategy 2018", Berthold Huber, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG, said.

VW lawyers up with firm that defended BP

Wed, Sep 23 2015

The string of bad news for Volkswagen shows no sign of slowing yet, especially with the recent resignation of CEO Martin Winterkorn. For aid in its legal defense in the US over its ongoing diesel emissions scandal, the automaker has now employed Kirkland & Ellis LLP, which was the same law firm BP used for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, according to Automotive News. VW is surely hoping that things go easier for it than BP. After the massive oil spill, the company paid $4 billion to settle criminal allegations and another $18.7 billion for the other federal and state claims, Automotive News reports. We'll see. Based on fines for each of the 482,000 diesel vehicles with this evasive software in the US, VW could be on the hook for $18 billion from this lapse. In addition, 11 million units are potentially affected across the globe, and the company is already setting aside 6.5 billion euros ($7.25 billion) in expected costs. The automaker's stock on the German exchange is being hit hard by this scandal. The original discovery of high pollution levels in VW's 2.0-liter TDI engine began with researchers last summer, and the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board had been working on the problem for months before the EPA issued its notice of violation on September 18. A criminal investigation has now begun. The day before his resignation, Winterkorn issued a video where he apologized profusely for the scandal and promised to make things right.

The hottest modern sports cars rendered as rally racers

Thu, Jan 14 2016

The modern-day World Rally Championship a monumental amount of fun to watch – I should know, as I recently was lucky enough to head to the UK to watch WRC Wales Rally GB – but even the most monstrous of the current WRC cars are based on fairly pedestrian European hatchbacks. Back in the heyday of rally, the Group B era in the 1980s, much hotter cars were the basis of even more incredible competition machines, for the most part. Take the exotic Ford RS200, or the Lancia Delta S4 with its twin-charged engine. And the hatchback-based Group B cars were bonkers, too. So what would some of our favorite modern cars look like if Group B had never ended? A British site named CarWow hired an artist to reimagine everything from the Rolls-Royce Wraith to the Porsche 911 as a retro-inspired rally car, and they were kind enough to let us share the results in the gallery above. The gallery features an Alfa Romeo Giulia in Martini livery, an Audi TT in classic Ur-Quattro colors, a Fiat 500 Abarth sporting massive flares and a hood blister full of auxiliary lights, a new Ford Mustang in RS200 livery, a Lancia Delta in Alitalia colors, a Porsche 911 in Rothmans livery, a Renault-Alpine in classic blue, a Rolls-Royce Wraith tribute to the Jules cologne Corniche Coupe, and a relatively modern-looking VW Touran. So far, the favorite around the office is the incredible Mercedes-Benz S-Class that is an homage to the wonderful 300 SEL 6.8 AMG "Red Pig" that essentially put AMG on the map. Check out the gallery above and see which one you like the best. Related Video:
